To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BETTY HARDY, a' citizen of the United States, and a resident of Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented cer-v tain new and useful Improvements in a Stove, of which the followmg 1s a specification. I

This invention relates tostoves, and more particularly to a gas stove primarily designed for use in light housekeeping, being designed for use as a heating stove or for preparing relatively light meals.

More specifically, the invention comprehends the provision of "a gas stove of neat and attractive appearance which is extremely simple in construction and may be manufactured for a relatively small cost, which stove embodies a hinged cover which when closed incases the cooking parts of the stove, namely the cast iron top which is provided with spaced openings having grates thereon and the pivotally or hingedly mounted toasting racks which may be moved over the burner openings when desired to toast bread or broil various articles upon the stove.

A further object of this invention is to provide, in a stove structure as specified, a fire wall or false back for the stove which comprises substantially an upper and lower section each inclining toward the rear of the stove as they extend toward each other forming a trough-like portion in which the burner pipe of the stove is positioned. The upper forwardly inclining portlon of the false back of the stove will guide and defleet the flame from the burner upwardly and forwardly against the lower surface of the cast iron cooking top, causing the gas flames to travel along the under surface of this plate and upwardly through the openings therein in a relatively fiat wide sheet; and also to provide an outlet or escape opening for the burnt gases at the rear end of the stove directly below the under surface of the cast iron top.

Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing:

and it is againbent downwardly-and rear-- wardly to form a pocket 13 near the upper end of the rear side of the body 1 with which pocket the outlet or escape openings 14:. for the burnt gases communicate.

The top 12 is preferably constructed of cast iron and it is provided with a pair of spaced burner openings 15 and 16. These openings may be provided with spiders 17 therein to form supports for various types of cooking utensils, such as a coffee pot, teapot, or tea kettle, which might not be of sufiicient size to overhang the edges of the openings. Ordinary cover plates 17 are provided for these openings 15 and 16, they having annular flanges 18 which overhang the col es of the openings to support the cover p ates in opening and closing positions as shown in Fig. 2.

Toaster racks 19 are provided which comprise a framework including side bars 20 the rear ends of which are pivotally connected as shown at 21 to the top 12, while the forward ends are downturned and preferably flattened to form supporting feet 22. Suitable cross bars 23 are connected to the side bars 20 and they have a plurality of transversely extending grates or supporting bars 24: attached thereto which support bread or other material to be toasted or may support any articles for broiling if it is so desired.

A cover 25 is hingedly connected as shown at 26 to the rear wall of the body 1 and this cover forms a housing for the top 12 of the stove, incasing and hiding from view the toast racks 19, openings 15 and 16 and the cover plate 17 therefor. 27 is attached to the front side of the cover 25 to facilitate the opening or rearward swinging of this cover when it is desired to use the stove as a cook stove. When it is desired to use the stove for the purpose of heating the room in which it is positioned, the cover 25 is moved into a closed position, providing a neat appearing heating stove. The cover 25 may have a sheet metal lining 28 therein if desired, and any suitable ornamentation, as indicated at 30 may be provided for adding to the artistic appearance of the stove.

The end 31 of the body 1 is provided with a small opening 32 which is positioned in close proximity to the burner pipe 6, so that the gas may be lighted through this opening. A pivoted closure 33 is provided for the opening 32 and it has an operating handle 34 carried thereby so that after the gas has been lighted, this cover may be moved for closing the opening 32 to prevent any escape of burning gas therefrom or the entrance of air into the stove through this opening. The bottom of the stove and the upwardly and rearwardly inclining portions of the A suitable handle combined cooking and heating stove has been provided which is particularly adapted for use by persons doing light housekeeping, so that in case they would desire to prepare a light meal, such as a breakfast, in their room, they could conveniently do so by using the stove and conveniently and easily make toast, tea or coffee and cook various articles, such as eggs, bacon or the like.

Having fully described the invention, what is claimed is:

In a combined heating and cooking gas stove, the combination of a body provided with an opening in the front side, a cast metal top on said body, a burner extending horizontally across said body and provided with outlet openings opening upwardly, a false back in said body and having its lower edge attached to the front side of the body at the lower edge of said opening, said back inclining rearwardly upwardly to said burner and forwardly upwardly from said burner to guide a jet of burning gas against the under surface of said top at the forward edge, the bottom of said stove provided with a ventilating opening, and the rearwardly inclining portion of said false back provided with ventilating openings, a horizontally positioned extension formed upon said false back at its upper edge and extending parallel and in spaced relation to the under surface of said top to guide the flame across the under surface of the top, and a cover hingedly connected to the rear wall of said body and forming a housing for the cast metal top of'the body.
