IMPROVEME'NT IN STONE POSTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,971, dated October 8, 1872.

To all whom t may concern Beit known that I, J oHN B. REYNoLDs, of Rutland, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stone Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The lnature of my invention consists in a marble or stone post to be used to mark graves, surveys of new land, 85e., made in a peculiar form and of the above-named material so as to save material in the manufacture, and to furnish a post easily set in the ground, and of such shape as will not be thrown from the ground by the frost, as hereinafter more fully described. t

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to` describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view of my stone post, and Fig. 2 is a view of the block before cutting.

A represents a block of stone or marble, of any suitable dimensions, being square or nearly square in its cross-section. From a point, a, a suitable distance from one end, the block is cut through diagonally to a point, b, on the opposite side, an equal distance from the other end, thus forming two posts of equal size, of form shown, each with one end square.

By means of this form of .post there is a large saving in material, cost of transportation, and in the labor of setting the posts in the ground. This latter is done by simply driving a wedge into the ground .and with drawing it; then inserting the post, instead of digging a hole for it and filling the dirt around it. In the one case the earth is left more compact than the original soil and in the other much looser, however careful the work may be done. l

' The advantage this post has over one with the two ends of equal size in resisting the action of frost will readily be seen from the fact that the square post is thrown, little by little, to the surface, the dirt falling under the base, and does not permit it to settle to its place, While this post, of the form shown, will,

as the frost leaves the ground, fall with the dirt to its original bed. l

These posts may be used for marking corners of streets, lands, and lots in cemeteries, and in surveys for new land; also, for milestones on railroads, and many other purposes.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article of manufacture, the stone or marble post A, having a square or nearlysquare top, with one straight side and one ineline side, terminating at the point b, so that two posts may be formed from one oblong piece of material without loss, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
