Description
w. N. WEEDEN.
Improvement in Construction of Lamp-Burners.
No. 131,917. Patented Oct. 1, 1872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM N. WEEDEN, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BENEDICT & BUBNHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m THE CONSTRUCTION OF LAMF-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,917, dated October 1, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. WEEDEN, of Waterbury,in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare that'the follow- I ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a top View of a lampburner constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same at the line as m; Fig. 3, a top view of a blank as domed up to prepare it for being formed into a chimney-holder, chimney-rest, and cone-support; Fig. 4, a section of the same at the line 3 y,- and Fig. 5, a top view of said portion as finished and ready to receive the cone, which latter is shown detached in Fig. 6.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a novel construction of that portion of a lamp-burner which comprises the chimney-holder, the chimneyrest, and the cone-support, which are all struck or formed out of the same piece of sheet meta1, without waste, thereby economizing the construction of the burner both as regards labor and material.
To make the combined chimney-holder, chimney-rest, and cone-support, I first stamp out and dome up a sheet-metal blank, A, substantially as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, leaving radial upper swells or braces on a. and a rim, b.
CASE B.
The portions between the radial swells a a are then stamped or cut and bent, as illustrated in Figs. 1,2, and 5, to form upper radial springarms 0 c, which constitute the chimney-holder, the same bearing or pressing against the interior of the chimney, While the rim b forms the rest or seat for the chimney, and the radial swells or braces a a constitute the cone-support, thus utilizing the whole metal of the blank and economizing labor in construction, as well as saving metal, over or as compared with the making of the chimney-holder, the chimney-rest, and the cone-support of difl'erent pieces, besides giving increased stability tothe structure. The cone B is formed of a separate piece of metal struck to match the' springs c c, and having horns d d cut from within acircu nscribing circle, as shown in Fig. 6. Such cone is shaped to lit snugly on the inner portions of the springs c c, and the horns d d bent to enter apertures e c in the springs c 0, below which they are turned to clamp the cone to the springs. in this way the cone is supported by and also stiffens or strengthens the springs-of the chimney-holder.
I What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
In a lamp-burner, the construction of the chimney-holder, the chimney-seat, and the cone-support of one and the same piece of metal, substantially as herein described.
WM. N. WEEDEN.
