HORACE EVERETT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
- IMPROVEMENT IN CANS FOR TRANSPORTING OILS, PAINTS, &c.
Specification iorming part of Letters Patent N 0. 131,863, dated October 1, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE EVERETT, of
I the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Transportation-Gan, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to produce a more secure and durable can for the transportation of oil, 820., than such as are made of metal vessels, made complete, and then in- .closed in a Wooden box. I attain the desired I A niorepermanent and durable wood-clothed vessel of tin is thus formed for the transporta tion of petroleum and other fluids than when the metal lining and wooden exterior are put together separately.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown my improved transportation-can in pieces, for
will suflice to retain the latter in the proper position. The four joints may be soldered after the four sides A A and B B have been nailed or screwed together, after which the metallined wooden bottom D may be secured to its place,'and the four joints presented in the interior of the vessel, at the junction of the sides with the bottom, may be soldered. All that now remains to complete the transportationcan is to apply the top, the lining d of which is not attached to the wooden cover E but has its edges turned down to form a flange, which fits intochannels made in the upper edges of the side linings by bending the same, and the flanges of the lining d are. soldered in the channel of the side linings prior to the application of the wooden cover E, which. is notched at one corner to make way for the tubular proiection m, the latter forming the mouth of the can.
It will be evident that by this plan of manufacturing transportation-cans the latter are more homogeneous, perfect, and durable than when a box is built and secured over a completed tin vessel. It may be said, moreover, that in building a wooden box over a complete metal can the latter is liable to be distorted and injured, an evil which is avoided by the adoption of my invention.
I claim as my inventionl. Manufacturing transportation-cans by lining the wooden sides and bottom with tinned plates prior to securing these parts together, as herein set forth.
2. 'As a new manufacture, a transportationcan constructed in the manner described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. v
HORACE EVERETT. Witnesses:
