PATENT OEEIGE.
lMARQUIS L. GORHAM, OF ROCKFOBD, ILLINOIS.
IMPRVEMENTA IN CULTIVTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters'Patent No. 131,818, dated October 1, 1872.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARQUIS L. GORHAM,
of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in' Gultivators, of wl1ichthe following is a specification:
. My invention relates to that class of cultivator-teeth known as a friction or slip tooth,
invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section cut through on dotted lines A.
B is a friction-plate, and is provided with a circular ange, G, which extends aroundits upper and front portion, and rises above the plane of the plate suicient to secure the upper portions of the tooth D. The lower and rear portion of the plate B is provided with a circular slot, E, of suitable widthand length.` The circular ange C and circular slot E have a common center. D is a cultivator-tooth of ordinary construction, and is pierced to receive bolt F at such a distance from its upper .end
that when the bolt F is passed through the slot E and tooth D the upper end of tooth D will rest against or near the iiange C. F is a screw-bolt f suitable construction which passes through slot E and tooth D, by means of which tooth D may be adjusted to any suitable working-angle and held in such a manner as to insure a thorough cultivation vof thesoil, and in case of the tooth coming in contact` with any unyielding obstruction will permit the tooth to yield until the obstruction is passed, when it can be readjusted by means of screw-bolt F. The forward portion of frictionplate B is provided with an extension piece, G, which is provided with suitable iianges H to receive beam K. K is a beam slotted to receive piece Gr of friction-plate B, to which it is secured by bolt or pin L, as shown. In this instance the friction-plate B is of uniform thickness, which will hold the tooth with a uniform tension in its rearward movement on plate B; but if it is desired to give greater freedom to the backward movement ofthe tooth on plate B the slotted portion thereof may be tapered rearward.
I claim as my invention- The single friction-plate B, constructed as described, in combination with standard D, clamp-bolt F, and beam K, as and for the purpose set forth.
MARQUIS L. GORHAM. Witnesses:
E. N. J. BEHEL, J. E. BEHEL.
