PETER ZIMIBELMANN, OF AURORA, ILLINOIS.
ROOF CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER ZIMBELMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Aurora, county of Kane, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roof Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in roof constructions and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character whereby a roof already built may be readily repaired. 7
Other objects will appear'hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1, is a perspective View of a portion of a roof embodying the invention,
Fig. 2, a similar View, with portions removed and broken away, and
Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of a plurality of repairing plates employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a sheet metal repairing plate 4: adapted to be placed over one roof shingle and slipped under the next shingle above, as indicated, said plate being provided at its lower edge with an upwardly turned flange 5 adapted to embrace the corresponding lower edge of the corresponding shingle, as indicated. The flange 5 on each of the plates 4 1s cut away at one end to form a notch 6 adapted to receive the flange on an adjacent plate so as to permit of lateral overlappmg of the plates in repairing a roof. Some of the repairing plates 4' are made of a length to extend completely under the exposed portlon of the upper shingle and part way under the next shingle above, as indicated, and whereby a leak or bad place in two ad acent portions of the roof may be sometimes repaired by the use of a single repairing plate, the lower portion of the plate 4' serving to cover a leak in a lower shingle and the uper portion of said plate passing under a eak in an upper shingle, thus repairing Specification of Letters Patent.

both. After the repairing plates are placed in posit on a indicated, suitable nails 7 are driven through the shingle at the proper places to further secure them in place.
At the ridge of the roof, two sheet metal str ps 8 are placed, one on each side of but aol acent to the ridge and each provided with an outwardly and downwardly extending engaging flange or lip 9. A ridge plate 10 is also provided and is adapted to rest over the ridge of the roof as shown, being provided at its lower edges with inwardly and upwardly extending flanges 11 adapted to engage with the flange or lips 9, as shown. By this arrangement, the ridge of a roof may be readily repaired or sealed against leakage by placing strips 8 on each side thereof, as indicated, and by slipping sections of ridge plate 10 into place'from the end or gable of the ridge, as will be readily understood.
,lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A roof construction comprising a sheet metal plate adapted to be placed over one shingle and slipped under the next shingle above, said plate being provided at its lower end with an upwardly bent flange adapted to embrace the lower edge of said one shingle, said flange being cut away at one end to form a notch to facilitate lateral overlapping of said plates, substantially as described.
2. A roof construction comprising a sheet metal plate adapted to be placed over one shingle and of a length to be slipped under the whole exposed portion of the next shingle above and under the next shingle above that, said plate being provided at its lower end with an upwardly bent flange adapted to embrace the lower edge of said one shingle, said flange being cut away at one end to emma form a notch to facilitate lateral overlap- In testimony whereof I have signed my ping of said plates, substantially as dename to this specification in the presence of 10 scribed. two subscribing witnesses.
3. A roof construction comprising a sheet PETER ZIMBELMANN 5 metal plate adapted to be placed over a shingle and of a length greater than the exposed Witnesses: portions of tW0'2Ld]a-C811t overlapped shin- JOSHUA Rl-I. Porrrs, gles, substantially as described. HELEN F. LILLIS.
