IM OVEMENT IN SHEET-METAL VESSELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,812, dated October 1, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
.Be it known that I, CHARLES B. COOPER, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee,-have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Vessels,
' of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to provide means for preventing the wear of sheet-metal vessels, especially the common tin pail; and
y it consists in a wooden hoop or rim attached to the bottom of the pail, as hereinafter de scribed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a pail, showing my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a section of the wooden rim, showing the manner of connecting the ends together, and also the manner of attaching the bottom.

A is the pail. B is the bottom. 0 is the wooden rim. To apply the wooden rim the bottom of the pail is raised, as seen in Fig.1. Before the bottom is inserted it is attached to the wooden rim by means of a bevel-groove, d, in theouter edge of the rim, and a flange, 0, formed by turning down the edge of the bottom to fit the groove, as seen in the drawing. This arrangement secures the bottom and the wooden rim together, and when inserted, as seen in Fig. 1, the bottom is soldered to the pail in the usual manner. The lower edge of the pail extends to the lower side of the wooden rim and maybe turned under it. By this arrangement the bottom of the pail is raised so that it is subject to no outward wear, and will consequently be as durable as any part of the pail.
With this wooden rim the pail may be subject to much harderusage than it could stand without it. The wooden rim may be formed.
by bending with the ends connected by a tongue and groove, as seen at f, or it may be turned out in a lathe, as may be desired.
I do not confine myself to any particular manner of making it, nor of connecting it with the pail, as it may be done in various ways.
This wooden rim may be applied to all vessels made of sheet metal, which are subject to wear out on the bottom like the tin pail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The bottom B e and wooden ring'G d clamped together and applied within the lower edge of a tapering body, A, as and for the purpose described. o
