To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIaM BERRY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lorna Doone, 'Old South Head Road, Rose Bay, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Hinging of Sheet-Metal Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of hinges for hingedly connecting lids to receptacles, and it has been devised particularly in order to, provide means whereby hinge members can be formed on the lid and body of a sheet metal receptacle and the like and pivotally connected without the aid of the short piece of wire ordinarily employed for the purpose.
The hinge is formed entirely out of the material of the lid and body of a receptacle and is made by passing the said lid and body successively within the sphere of operation of two or more sets of shaping dies and a closing die.
The invention comprises also improvements in the formation of the hinge members whereby the hinging operation will be simply and economically performed in a highly eflicient manner and a strong and durable hinge will result.
In order that the invention may be readily understood reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a lid and body having hinge members formed thereon constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the lid and body hingedly connected by said members.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view drawn to an enlarged scale showing one of the hinges formed by the members shown in Fig. 1.

The depending portion of the back of the 11d is creased or folded longitudinally into a crease substantiallyof U-shape in cross sect1on by means of dies. WVhen the crease 3 has been formed on the back of the lid 1 slots or perforations are cut at any intermediate points in the backs of the lids directly above the crease 3. Arches positioned to aline or coincide with the slots 17 in the lid are pressed in the back of the bodies 7; the backs of the bodies are pressed slightly inward to substantially semi-circular shape in cross section as shown at 10, said depression 10 being in line with the arches and extendmg from outside one arch to a point outside the other arch. This depression is preferably formed by the same dies and simultaneously with the forming of the arches, the material at the juncture of said arches and depression 10 being slitted transversely. After the arches are formed the material is slitted at the top of the arches and the outer side, and the arched portion of the back pressed out forming arched tongues 18, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
To hingedly connect lids and bodies formed with hinge members as above described the bodies are placed over one side of a die and the lids are passed over the opposite side of the die with perforations 17 directly beneath the tongues 18. WVith the lids and bodies in this position the top member of the die descends and presses the tongues 18 back to their original positions with the arched portions engaging over the creased portion 3, as shown in Fig. 4:. To prevent the escape of any fine substance, such as powder or the like, which may be packed in the receptacles the ends of the crease 3 are blinded or closed as shown in Fig. 3 and engage in the recessed portion 10 formed at the outer sides of the tongues.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a pair of arched tongues 18 are provided to cooperate with the slots 17 above the crease 3 to hingedly connect the lids and bodies. However, if desired a plurality of such tongues may be provided, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. As shown in aid the slots which. are
provided above and at the ends of the crease 3 are cut through the edge of the rim of the lid, as shown at 4:, thereby forming pint-les at the end of the creased" portion 3. The arches of the end tongues may be formed with outer side walls to close the outer ends thereby forming the arches of the outer tongues or at th end in the form of bulbs, as clearly shown in said figures with the depression 10 extending only to the inner end of the outer tongues, whereby as said tongues are' pressed back to engage the free ends of the crease formed by the slots 4 they will serve to close and seal the ends of the crease and thereby prevent leakage of the contents of receptacles.
What I do claim is 1. In a metal box, comprising a lid and body, the lid havii'ig a rim with a depending close the openings formed by the convex and c concave portions of the hinged connection.
2; In a metal box, a box body having spaced arched'tongues of convex and substantially semi-circular form with their free ends extended from said convex bends, the portion of the body intermediate the tongues being depressed into concave and substantially semi-circular form and a lid for the body having a part of convex and substantially semi-circular form and provided with spaced erforations above said part normally receiving the extended free ends of the tongues, one section of the hinged connection that is relatively movable to the body having closedends for closing the opening formed by said convex and concave portions of said hinged connection.
