River-nouns.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Fnnnnron WV. B'reons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Virginia, in the county'o-f Saint Louis and State of M innesota, have invented a new vide 'a novel means whereby a rivet may be held, i rran inaccessible place, while. the rivet is being butt-ended.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the abovearnd other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the detailsof construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that,"
in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit ofthe invention.
In the accompanying drawings:'-
Figure 1 shows in end elevation, a portionofa boi'lenwhereunto the device fomning the subject matter of this application has been applied, partsof the boiler being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a fragmental 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross section showing the holding device mounted-en the boiler in away which differs slightly from the way in which the structure is mounted in Fig. 1;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing the holding lever;
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the lever;
Fig. 6 is a plan of the lever;
Fig. 7 is a cross section on the line 77 of Fig. 6;
Fig. 8 is a cross section on the line 88 of Fig. 6; and
Fig. 9 is an elevation showing the fulcrum bolt.
In the accompanying drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 denote the end members of a boiler provided with tubular flanges 3. The end members 1 and 2 are supplied with openings 5 adapted to receive stay bolts 6. Let it be assumed that it is desired to con nect the tubular flanges 3 by means of rivets 7 and that it will be somewhat difficult, in the absence of the device hereinafter desection onthe line specific-anon of Letters Patent. scribed, hold the inner ends of the rivets 7 while the outer ends thereof are being butt-ended. The device forming the subject matter of this application. has been shown, by way' of illustration, as being used in connection with a portion of a boiler, but i it is of course to be understood that the structure is capable of many uses, other than the one specified.
-In carrying out the present invention there is provided a lever 8 supplied at one end with a broadened hea 9, the other end,
justment in any of theopenings 15-, the pivotmemberbeing' mounted in any selected pair of the openings 5 of the members 1 and 2. In this way, the lever :8 will be fulcrumed on the members 1 and 2 for swinging movement transversely of the tubular flanges 3* which form the fire door hole 4. V
The invention includes a fulcrum bolt 18 comprising ahead '19 and a shank 20. The head 19 of the fulcrum bolt 18 has any (lee sired number of openings 21. The head 19 of the fulcrum bolt may be placed the recess 14 of the lever 8 and the pivot member 17 may be mounted for adjustment, in either of the openings 21 in the head 19 of the fulcrum bolt. The shank 20 of the fulcrum bolt 18 may be inserted through alined rivet holes 22 in the boiler parts 12, as shown in Fig. 3, a nut 23 being threaded on the inner end of the shank 20. Thus, the lever 8 is fulcrinned in a manner which differs slightly from that shown in Fig. 1.
One end of a flexible element 24 is mounted in the hole 16 of the lever and extends laterally, between the end members 1 and 2, to a point at one side of the boiler. If desired, the flexible element 24 may be eX- tended outwardly through one of the openings 5 in the part 1. Y
The outer end of the flexible element 24 may be mounted on a hook 25 constituting a part of a chain 26 connected with a finger 27 tightening device may be of ing fulcrumed on a cleat 29 mounted on the floor. The lever 28 and attendant parts constitute a tightening device, and this any desired form adapted toput the flexible element 24 under tension, 7
When thelever 8 is fulcrumed as shown in Fig.1 or is fulcrumedon the bolt 18, as shown in Fig. .3, the head of a rivet is engaged with the anvil 11 of lever, between the wings 12. WVhen tension is exerted on the flexible element 241, the lever will be held in place, so as to retain the rivet, and the,
rivet may be butbendedreadily; Since the head 9 of the lever is provided with a plurality'of openings 15, and since-there are severalopenings 21 in the head 19 of the 7 fulcrum bolt 18, it will be obvious that many vided intermediate its ends with an anvil for. the rivet; means for securing and ful: cruming one end 'of the lever pivotally butdetachably upon the structure wherein the rivet is to be inserted; and means for applying tension to the other end of thelever.
" comprising a lever provided intermediate its ends with an anvil for the rivet and curved to extend part way a'round the tube; mechanism for fulcrumlng the lever at one end; and means for operating the lever from the other end thereof, said means and said mechanism being spaced to admit the tube therebetween. v 1
3. In a devicefor holding rivets, a lever provided at one end with a recess and hava tightening device assembled with the other end of the lever. r 7
4. In a device for. holding rivets, a lever provided at one end with a recess and having a plurality of transverse openings com-T1 municating with the recess, the lever being provided. intermediate. its ends with. an an-,
vil; a pivot member adapted to be mounted in any of the openings, andextended across the recess; a fulcrum element having one of its ends disposed in the recess, saidend of the fulcrum element having-a plurality of openings, in any one of 'which the pivot' member may be mounted; and a tightening device assembled with the other end of the lever. '7 1 l V 5. In a device for holding rivets, a lever 7 provided intermediate its end with an anvil and having projecting wings located on each side of the anvil, there being a recess in one end of the lever and saidend ,ofthe lever being supplied with a plurality ofopenings" communicating with the recess; a pivot member adapted tobe mounted in any of the openings, and extended across the recess;
a fulcrum element havingone of its ends 2. A device for holding a rivet 1n a tube disposed in the recess,.said end ofthe fulcrum element having-a plurality of openings, in any one of which the pivot member s be mounted; and a tightening device assembledwith the other end of the lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Copies of this patent may be obtainedfor five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
