Specification of Letters Patent.

.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O'rro KoNicsLow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented ceitain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hinges generally, and particularly to that class of such devices utilized for the doors of motor vehicles.
More specifically the invention relates to a hinge comprising a frame to be permanently secured to a pillar or other portion of the body and adapted to receive and i-emovably hold portions of hinges secured to the door, the door portion of the hinges be ing preferably made integral, the entire arrangement being such that the relationship between the parts is always maintained while being applied and after installation.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the side of a vehicle showing the door, with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hinge construction as it appears from the outside of the car; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view looking at the hinge frame in elevation with the door member swung into open position; Fig. 4 is a section upon the line 44 of Fig. 2, with the door closed; and Fig. 5 is a similar section with the door open.
In carrying out the invention any preferred form and construction of parts may be employed, so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shown one embodiment which is effective, and in such arrangement 1 represents the pillar of the frame of the body, and 2 the framework of the door, these parts being of any preferred construction, and being cut out to receive the parts of the hinge structure.
The hinge structure comprises a Xed frame facing inember ff having a hinge socket near each end formed by offsetting the metal at 5 to form a hinge facing flange depression 6 and then bending the metal downward to form a hinge receiving recess or socket having side portions 7 and a bottom or connecting portion 8, the main body strap being bent ai; 9 to form a hinge facing flange depression l0 on the opposite side of the loop. The bottom or connecting portion S adjacent to each side member 7 is provided with an opening 11 for a purpose to Abe described, and each of the portions 5 and 9 at the strap recesses is provided with a threaded opening 12 for a purpose to be described.
The hinge mechanism proper is preferably made in a unitary arrangement including a plurality of individual hinge devices each comprising a socket engaging strap foi engagement in one of the recesses of the hinge frame, and tongues pivoted to the socket engaging straps and preferably formed integral with a facing strip to be secured to the door facing. Each socket engaging strap consists of a pair of hinge side inembers 13 connected by a stop web 14.- at the edge. Each side member has a lug 15 at its inner end adapted to project through the corresponding opening 11 in the connecting or bottom portion of the socket of the frame member Il. The free ends 16 of the side members extend in opposite directions and in substantially the same plane and are adapted to engage in the recesses 6 and 10 and form facing flanges. These eXtendinOr portions or facing flanges are provided wit-Ii counteisunk openings for receiving machine screws 17 engaging in the threaded openings 12. In this way the socket engaging strap of each hinge device is held upon the outside by the screws and on the inside by the lugs l5 against movement or displacenient. rlhe hinge Side members 13 are provided with openings 18 which receive the reduced ends 19 of a pin, in each hinge device 20. Engaging this pin is a sleeve 21 formed on the end of a door hinge strap or tongue 22 preferably formed integral with a main door engaging vfacing strip 23 countersunk in the edge face of the door and held therein by screws passing through openings 'Zeh The sleeve portion touches substantially the same vertical plane as the edge of the main strap 23 and extends in parallelism with the main strap for a short distance preferably the distance from the pivot pin to the outside edge of the web 14, and is then bent with a curve and merges into the door engaging facing strip 23, this portion being strengthened by suitable ribs 25 struck up from the metal. In this way the door is free to swing until the straight portion of the strap Q2 engages the inside of the stop one of the tests to which such hinges are sub- Y web let when further swinging movement of the door will be prevented.
