.laplieation le January 3l, 1913. Serial No. 745,386.
To r//Z "te/wm ffm/1 1] concern.'
lie it known that l'. Hexer (t. Voioirr, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Door Locks, of which the following' is a full, clear, and exact. description. A
'l`his'invent1on relates to so-ealled fire door locks and more mrtieularly to the general type ot' tire door lochV disclosed in my prior Patent Xo. 1,0JCT,UOU of Deeember 17th. D12, in which a plurality of spaced gravity locking' bolts are employed, these bolts beine' retractable through a common operatingr means and being' blot-lied against surreptitious retraction iiulepeiulently ot.' said operation' means. mechanism bein; y provided in addition t'or automatically locking' these bolts retracted upon the opening` ol the door and l'or automatirally releasing' said boltsI upon the elosing ot' the door.
-'l`he present invention embodies a tire door-I` loek of this l'eneral character providine' improved holt operating and blocking means, a detailed description of which will he l'ound in the following` lspecification taken ,in lconnection with the aeeompanving drawings 'forming part thereof. and illustrating' a preferable embodiment of my iinproved forni ot lock. v
ln these drawings. Figure l is a view in elevation ot the loelv' trame and the assembled lot-lt parts. the tace or wall of the hollow metal door and a plate olI the lock case being' removed to disclose the interior arrangement. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through he door with the loch 'trame and loclt in position therein. Vig. Z3 is a 'traffmentar),Y vertical section` on an enlarged scale, taken through the lower end ot' the door. lfiy. lis a similar section through the upper end ot' the. door. Fig'. 5 isa View' ol' a detail. Fie. t3 is a `fragmentary `View in elevation ol` the upper end ot the lock t'rame and its parts, and illustrates a moditied lorm of lock.
Af; a prel'aee to .a ldescription of the elements ot' the lrziwings, l may state that the loelt ot' the present invention is ot' the type intended tot' apjfilication as a unitary strueture to hollow metal doors, the frame beiner insertible within the door `from its edge, the outer tace of the traine terminer the edge plate of the door,k
Referring now to the structure shown in llartiord county, State ofv tudinallyY thereof, studs 3 are provided, these studs being' intended for spot 'welding to the inner taee ot' the hollow door. The bar`l of the angle iron has an otl'set portion 4 ately secured, this casingr eomjn'isiner plates 5 spaced apart and by studs t5. The sleeve t' handle (not shown) leek case, the spindle ,(not shown) trom said of an operating' t). Seated over this roll back t) and its hub and supported thereby is a volte lt) having' one end rigidlj secured to an operatingbar tl extending; longitudinallv of the lock trame. 'this` operatingr bar is mounted to have avcomluned longitudinal and transverse motion. A\djacent its'lower end a braeliet l2 projects ytrom the bar 2 of the angle iron and a link nected to angle iron. its bar 2 has` secured thereto and |'nojecting therefrom a. bracket plate llt, this plate beine' j'n'ovided with an elongated aperture l5 therein through which the opel'- atingbar ll extends and b v u'ieans of which the combined longitudinal and transverse movement ot the bar is perniitted.
At a pluralit)r ot points longitudinally ot the angle iron'. the bar l ot the angle iron is provided with pivot studs lt on each of which a locking `bolt 1T is journaled by means ot' a pin 15H. llach bolt is formed with a cam slot 1S) therein adjacent its rear end, cooperatingA with which are stud." 2() carried by and projecting' 'from the operating' bai'. one stud beine' pr videdlor each bolt. rl`he studsI are seated within `the Cain slots and lie at; the rear ends of said slots when the bolts are projected. the angle iron mayY be provided with a suit# To the upper end of the operatin` bar l1 is pivot'ally set-tired a locking head 22 haiting a locking recess 23 therein. A transot' the door and at suitable intervals, longi-l (Fie. l) to which a loch easing;` is appropri- 4 secured in such relation' handle seating in the hub 8 ofthe roll baely able linish plate 2l, both this plate and the bar 2 being' suitably apertured to permit theprojection and retraction ot the looking' 1 proper is is carried within this 125 is pivotally conthis bracket and to the lower end' of the bar. Adjacent the upper end of the rl"he bar 2 of in'Which cooperates with the offset locking flange 3G of the pivoted locking dog 37, as heretofore described in connection with the other forni of locking head and dog. ln
this form of my device, as in the one first described, there is, therefore, movement of the operating bar in two different directions, one direction of movement being through the operating handle and being adapted to retract the bolts and the other direction ot movement ot' said bar blocking its operation to retract said bolts, this last action taking place upon attempted retraction of the bolts independently of the operating bar (as through a knife inserted between the door and jamb as heretofore suggested).
iVhile I have beein described specific structural embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that the same may be modified in detail and relative arrangement of parts within the spirit of the invention and the. scope of the appended claims.
