In order to assist in guiding and feeding the work-sheet on the platen 1, there are provided two series of pressure or feed rolls 7 and 8; the former are the larger and engage somewhat to the rear of a vertical plane passing through the axis of the platen, while the latter are smaller and engage the platen considerably in front of the same vertical plane. These rolls are each composed ofa spool 9 (Fig. 8), having a rubber covering or coating 10, soas to give a yielding, engaging and yet positive surface. The series of rolls 7 and 8 are rotatably mounted on shafts lland 12 respectively. In order to prevent the rolls from moving longitudinally of the shafts l1 and 12, there are provided suitable spacing collars 13 held themselvesagainst axial movement by means of pins 14.
The rolls are so -mounted that they will move as a unit toward and from the platen 1. To do this, the shafts 11 and 12 have reduced portions 15, which enable them to set into open-sided slots 16 and 17 (Fig. 10) in double-armed brackets 18. The brackets 18 are pivotally mounted at suitable intervals on a supporting rod 19.. The two series of feed rolls are shown to be mounted to move as a unit, having a fixed relation with respect to each other.
Shifting of this unit as a whole is accomplished by providing on the supporting rod 19 at intervals thereon a series of forked arms 20 to which are pivotally connected cranks 21. Normally, the pressure or feed rolls 7 and 8 are held in intimate contact collar or sleeve 27 loosely, mounted on the shaft 22, but provided with a series of openings 28, into which may be inserted a stop or screw 29 arranged to engage limiting edges 20 provided on the cross beam 5; The
action of these spring units is such that they will tend to swing the pins 25 upwardly, thereby tending to move from the position in Fig. 2 to the position in Fig. 3, forcing the feeding mechanism up into intimate en gagement with the platen ,1.
In order to depress the feed rolls out of engagement with the platen, there is pro vided on the rock shaft 22 a crank 31 operated by a thrust link 32,'in turn actuated by a bell crank 33 secured to a stub shaft 3-1, mounted on one of the sides 4: and having secured on its-outer end a finger-piece By depressing this finger-piece 35, the shaft 22 will be rotated, causing the cranks 21 fast thereon to pull down the JOiIlGd feeding rolls against the tension of the springs 23, from the position indicated in Fi '3 to the position indicated in Fig.2. 61m arm of the bell crank 33 engages under the top strip of one of the sides 4 to limit the downward movement of the finger-piece. including a bottom channeled bar and a comprising rock arms, a rock shaft journaled in said partitions and comprising rock arms connected to thefirst rock arms to enable the rocking of the rock shaft to withdraw the rolls from the platen, third rock arms journaled on the rock shaft and bearing against the supporting shaft, and springs coiled around the rock shaft, bearing against the bar and thrusting upon the tlnrd rock arms to carry the rolls against the platen.
9. The combination with a platen frame, including a bottom channeled bar and a platen, of two series of rolls cooperating with said platen, brackets for rigidly uniting said series of rolls to move as a unit, a supporting rod for said brackets, arms on said supporting rod, cranks connected to' said arms, a rock shaft, lying within said bar, on which said cranks are mounted, rotatable to move said rolls outof en agement with said platen, springs encircling said shaft to hold the rolls against the platen, a crank on said rock shaft, a link connected to operate said last-mentioned crank, a bell crank for operating said link, and a fingerpiece for operating said last-mentioned bell crank.
10. The combination with a platen frame, including a bottom channeled bar and a platen, of feed rolls cooperating with said platen, a shaft frame for said feed rolls,
