.Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER MASTERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice- .Cream Packers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improved means for operating the closures of ice cream packers or similar receptacles. The principal objects are to increase the speed, ease and convenience with which the covers may be opened and closed. The accompanying drawings show one exemplifying embodiment of the invention and after considering this in connection with the specification it will be evident that other embodiments may be made within the spirit of my invention and I do not limit myself to details except as claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a C0111: plete packer with pedal cover operating mechanism showing one of the box lids and the corresponding can cover opened and the others closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the operating mechanism for one of the end compartments. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the operating mechanism for the center compartment. Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing one of the end compartments and its operating mechanism. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail showing the connection between the boxlid and the can cover.
The box 1 has two end compartments and a center compartment, each of which is closed by a lid 2 hinged at 3. Within each compartment is a can 4 to hold ice cream or thelike, surrounded by a packing space 5 for ice. Each can is closed by a cover 6- which has a bottom surface packing 7 of considerable area to rest on the upper edges of cans of different sizes. Each can cover is connected to its corresponding box lid by a bolt or link 8, of which the head 9 lies in a recess 10 in the lid and is secured by plate 11 on the under side of the lid. This plate has a central hole to accommodate the stem of the link and this hole is large enough to permit the bolt to oscillate with considerable freedom, constituting in effect a universal joint connecting the link with the lid. The lower part of the link passes through a hole in the can cover 6 and some distance below the cover is provided with a stop 12. Evidently when the box lid is raised the link 8 :will pass up through the hole in the can cover until stop 12 engages the cover, and the cover is then raised withthe lid :to substantially the position shown in Fig. 1, the link meantime pivoting in relation to the lid at itsuniversal connection. When the lid is closed the can coverdrops naturally upon the can and the link thereafter slides idly down through the cover. In this way variations in the height of the can are accommodated.
Foot operated mechanism is provided for operating the covers and lids as follows:
For eachof the end compartments a pedal lever 13 is fulcrumed at 1 1 to a fitting secured'to the end of the box near the bottom. Each of the levers is connected by a link 15 with a rod 16 which is clamped to the top of one of the lids 2 by means of the fittings 17. For the center compartments a pedal 18 is located at the front of the box near the bottom. This pedal is carried on the forward end of a rod 19 and this rod is pivotally mounted in the brackets 20 and passes from the front to the rear of the box where itis provided with an arm 21 connected to a link 22, and the link is in turn connected to an arm 23 which is secured to the center lid 2 at 24:. The arm 23 extends upward at a rearwardly inclined angle from a point sigostantially in line with the hinges of the li In the case of either of the compartments, the user may quickly and easily raise the lid and cover by pressing with his foot upon the appropriate pedal 13 or 18 and while holding the cover raised may hold in one hand the usual ice cream scoop and in the other hand a plate or receptacle to be filled. Since the operator is not required to use his hands for manipulating the covers he is evidently enabled to manipulate the other necessary implements much more easily and quickly and the use of the packer for dispensing its contents is manifestly greatly expedited. At the same time sanitary principles are complied with since it is not necessary to touch the covers with the hands and ice is conserved considerably since there is no temptation to leave the covers open ex cept when actually removing the cream.
I claim:
1. In an ice-cream packer, the combination of a box having a can compartment and an opening over the compartment, a hinged 'cover, a link loosely connecting the lid and cover, means for raising thelid, and said parts so arranged that a lost motion is pro-' vided between the link'and the can cover to permit'the cover to accommodate itself to cans of different heights.
2. In an ice cream packer, the combination with the box and a can therein, of a hinged lid and means for raising it, a link having ahead loosely attached to said lid, acan cover having an opening therethrough,
i and said link passed through the cover and provided with retaining ineans to prevent disconnection from the cover.
3. In an ice-cream packer or the like, the combination with the box and a can therein, of a lid and means for raising it, a can described.
SYLVESTER MASTERS.
