To all whom it may concern:

, following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toys and particularly to types such as are capable of performing tricks when operated.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a, toy having an innocent appearance in the form of a boX or container, havlng a sliding cover, which upon being opened causes an object to be projected, and adapted to make contact with the hand of the operator,

A further object is to provide a device containing an element simulative of a snake adapted to create surprise and consternation on the part of the operator.

These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts here inafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a toy made in accordance with the 1nvention, the outer wall being removed.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.

The device is. comprised of a rectangular, box-like casing having side walls 10 and 11, and bottom 12, the side walls being grooved along their upper edges receptive of a sliding cover plate 14, provided with a nick 15 1 adapted to receive the nail of an operators hand, as best shown in Fig. 2.

The interior walls of the container are preferably covered with a dark fabric 16, as black velvet, so as to present a relatively dark interior. Rigidly engaged between the side walls 10 is a fixed pin 18, and pivoted on the pin is a block 19, having a groove 20 in its outer end and pivoted in the groove is a pulley 21, mounted on a pin 22, extending through the recessed end of the block 19, While attached to the inner edge of the block is a wire .guide loop 23.

The opposite inner end of the block 19 is rigidly engaged with a curved elementthe same being colored and shaped to represent copies of this patent may be obtained for the body 25, the neck 26 and head 27 of a snake, from which projects a spurred tongue 28.

Attached to the inner peripheral portion of the snake-like body 25, by an eye 30 is a flexible cord 31, the same passing through the looped wire 23 acting as a guide, then over the pulley 21, its opposite end being attached to a loop 32, secured centrally in the lower side of the sliding cover plate 14.

The normal position of the curved element 25 is within the dark lined container, due to its gravity, the same being pivoted upon the pin 18, while the cord 31, when the cover is closed, obviously is slackened, due to the position of the loop 32 at that time. When, however, the cover plate 14 is moved outwardly, the cord 31 is stressed or tightened, acting in the manner of a lever over the pulley and projecting the element 25 outwardly through the opening, uncovered by the rearward movement of the cover-plate which, is quickly operated, causes the spur or tongue 28 to make contact with the operators hand in an obvious manner.

Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its construction and operation, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a toy of the class described, the combination with a relatively narrow hollow container having a blackened interior and a sliding cover engaged to operate longitudinally over said container, of a pin fixed to extend between the side walls of said container, a block pivoted on said pin, said block having a recess at one end, a pulley rotatable in the recess, a wire loop guide at one end of said block, a curved semi-circular element fixedly engaged with the opposite end of said block, said element being simulative of a snake and having a spur at its outer free end. and a cord attached to the inner portion of said element at one end, and to said sliding cover at the other end, said cord passing over said pulley, and between the loop of said guide whereby said element may be projected outwardly through the upper portion of said container when said cover is moved rearwardly.
