To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY Rmoan'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented ccrtain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Forming Hollow Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the art of forming tubular or hollow articles from solid blanks or billets.
In the manufacture of shell forgings, the general practice is to compress a heated billet or metal blank and then to displace the metal by a punching operation. The lower or billet receiving and holding die being fixed or stationary, the displaced or extruded metal generates considerable side friction; hence the die liner is comparatively short-lived. Again, since both the die and the punch are served with a general taper, the ultimate shell body is more or less deformed so that a subsequent drawing operation is necessary to insure concentricity.
Objects of the present invention are to provide for rapidly, and, with a minimum number of operations, forming shell bodies of substantially true concentricity; to provide for reducing the side friction before alluded to, and for easing the forging oper ation as a whole; and more specifically to provide a floating die whereby the aim and purposes of the invention are accomplished.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will more readily be understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of so much of a shell forging apparatus as is necessary to illustrate the application of the invention, the floating die being in its lowermost position, the billet compressed therein and undergoing displacement by the piercing or forming punch.
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating how the die is elevated coincident with the extrusion or displacement of the metal, thereby relieving the strain on the die, saving wear on the liner by appreciable reduction of skin friction, and in a word making for bet ter forgings.

pot 5 is provided with a relatively movable die 6, the range of movement being determined, if necessary or desirable, by the shoulders 7 and 8 with which the die and die-pot are respectively provided.
By this construction and arrangement it will be evident to those skilled in the art that during the shell forging operation the die 6 will float or rise in the pot 5 coincident with the displacement of the metal of the billet 9. Moreover, since it is unnecessary to form the liner 10 on tapering lines, shell bodies of substantially true concentricity are formed, thus dispensing with the usual drawing operation. The invention also promotes rapidity of manufacture because it relieves the strainror pressure on the several parts.
When the punch is withdrawn, the die 6 is free to drop back and does fall back to its initial position. The shock of the fall is cushioned or absorbed by provisions, such as the coiled springs 11 lodged in pockets in the base plate 12. The die is prevented frglm leaving the die-pot by the shoulders 7 an 8.
The liner 10, the end-forming plate 13, the billet compressing and displacing member 14, knock-out pin 15, and other accessories are or may be as is usual.
Having described the nature and objects of the invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2* 1. In apparatus of the type recited, the combination of billet compressing and displacing means, a fixed die-pot, a billet-holding die susceptible of relative movement in response to a metal-displacing operation, and shock-absorbing provisions for the die.
2. In apparatus of the type recited, the combination of billet compressing and displacing means, a fixed die-pot, a floating die, means for ejecting the formed article, and shock absorbing provisions for the die.
3. In apparatus of the type recited, the combination of billet compressing and displacing means, a fixed die-pot, a floating die, cooperating abutments on said die-pot and die for determining the range of movement of the latter, and a cushion for the die.
4.
