To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, MAZEL L. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'I`atting- Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shuttles and more particularly to tatting shuttles.

The main object of the invention is to provide a shuttle of this character having a point always ready and handy for use in joining the rings of tatting and for loosening knots and which does not hinder at all the progress of the tatting.

Another object is to provide a shuttle of this character with the end of one side extending longitudinally beyond the end of the other side and tapered to form a slender point, said point being slightly curved outward.

Another object is to provide a tatting shuttle equipped with means to prevent the thread from pulling out too quickly when the shuttle has been nearly emptied.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated, a mounting block l is shown around which a thread is wound and secured to the block by means of slits 9. formed on opposite ends thereof whichprevent the quick pulling out of the thread when the shuttle has been nearly emptied.

Secured to the sides of the block 1 in any suitable manner preferably by riveting, are the side plates 3 and 4 pointed at opposite ends in the customary manner to facilitate the passage of the shuttle through the loops of the lace. These side plates 3 and 4f may be composed of celluloid, resilient metal, or any suitable material and one of them has one end extended longitudinally beyond the adjacent end of the other plate and tapered to form a slender point 5 which is curved slightly outward as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. This point 5 is designed for loosening knots and for joining the rings of the tatting and by its construction it does not in any way interfere with the process of tatting.

In winding the thread on the mounting block 1. the inner end is first inserted in one of the slits at opposite ends of said block and securely holds the thread so that when the shuttle is nearly emptied, the thread will not pull out too quickly.

The side plates 3 and 4 are formed so that they touch each other at their opposite ends,

but being of light material such as celluloid that springs apart to permit the thread to pass between them when the shuttle is being wound and when it is used for tatting.

By so constructing this shuttle, it will be extremely inexpensive to manufacture and yet be capable of all the uses for which the more expensive shuttles are adapted.

The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove ex? pedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention.
