HORATIO N. BLACK, OF PHHIADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN'RCLININGCHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,419, dated September 17, 1872 antedated September 14, 1872.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORATIO N. BLACK, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable ImprovementinReclining-Chairs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a bottorn view, and Fig. 4 is a side view thereof.
This invention has relation to reclining chairs; and consists in the hereinafter-described construction and novel arrangement of devices, through which the chair is made to extend or contract according to the position of the occupant, and in conformity with the postures assumed by him.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents the sides of a reclining-chair. B B are the legs, and C the arms. D designates the cushion, which is continuous from the top of the back to some distance beyond the seat. The cushion is supported upon three rectangular frames, the back-frame E, seat-frame F, and foot-frame. F'. The side bars of the frames E and F have their inner ends enlarged and rounded, and are pivoted to the sides of the chair. G represents cleats, secured to the sides of the chair, and constructed with concave recesses in their ends to receive the ends of the pivoted frames E and F. H H indicate transverse rods, extending from one to the other of the side bars of the frames E and F', at some distance from the pivots. 'Ihe end bars of the seat-frame E are grooved longitudinally on their under sides, and rest upon the bars H H. Buttons h h may be used in securing the seat-frame to the rods H H. By means of these rods the frames are connected, and thus are enabled to work together. Hence when the back of the chair is thrown back by the occupant, as in the act of reclining, the forward frame is thrown out toward a horizontal position. I represents a horizontal bolt, arranged within a socket in one of the cleats G, and projecting, through openings in the end, toward the rounded ends of the frame E. The end of said bolt enters sockets t', and serves to lock said frame in any desired position. J designates a thumb-piece, by which the bolt I is operated. K designates disks, secured to the inner faces of the rounded ends of the frames E F'. These disks hold the ends of the pivots and rods H H.
- What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The recliningchair herein described, having frames E F F' and A, eccentric transverse rods H, and locking-bolt I, constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HORATIO NELSON BLACK.
