UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. MOELLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WM. M. WALTON, 0F SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIGNAL-LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,365, dated September 17, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES F. MOELLER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Signal-Lanterns, and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same.
This invention is for giving diderent colored signals by an ordinary lantern, thereby avoiding the necessity of carrying two or more lanterns with different-colored glass, for railroad trains, and on other occasions where such signals are required. Y
My invention consists in a sliding frame surrounding the glass, and covered with red merino or other fabric to give the necessary colored light when surrounding the glass, and which frame can be moved down into a concentric case and there be retained when not in In the drawing I have shown an elevation of 'this lantern, partially in section, illustrating the said improvement.
The lamp a, protectingguard b, and top c, are to be 0i' any usual or desired character. The glass d is to be cylindrical, or nearly so, and rests upon the upper part of the inner case e, surrounding the lamp a. The outer concentric case f is of a size to leave the necessary space for the frame i, and iiexible signalcurtain h, that is stretched upon and attached to said frame. This frame t' can be moved freely up or down between the cases e f by a projecting handle, o, the case f being slotted for the same to project from the frame i. A horizontal slot and spring-catch at s serve to hold the handle'o with the frame and colored cloth in an elevated position around the glass d, and when not in use the frame i can belowered between e and f and be out of the way,
so that the lantern can be used for ordinary purposes. An inclined ring, 1", serves to cover the space into which the signal-curtain and slide are lowered, and also to keep the frame at a little distance from the lamp-glass.
If the parts of the lantern are detachable i 'flame of the lamp, is easily replaced if injured,
and adds but little weight to the lantern.
I claim as my invention- Y The metal frame i and covering-ring r sustaining the flexible curtain h, and sliding outside the lantern-glass d when elevated, and into the metallic casef when depressed, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 15th day of September,
C. F. MOELLER.
