To all lwhom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC ROY SHEPARD, a citizen of the United. States, residing at River Junction, inA the county of Gadsden and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal -Screens; and I do hereby declare the f ollowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrlption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled vin the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a new and novel indestructible all-metal screen orpwindows and doors, and has for one of its objects the provision of a screen which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and ecoomical in view of its lasting qualities.
Another object of .this invention is to provide an indestructible al1-metal casing to be used in conjunction with the screen frame andprovided with means to provide for the close interfitting of the screen frame therein to eiiiciently prevent the assage of insects and the 'like around the e es of the screen frame.
Another object of this invention is to provide a screen and its frame and a casing for the screen frame which are exceedingly sanitary and which casing is so 4constructed as to adapt the casing for ready attachmentto window and door frames of varying dimenslons.
Another object of this invention is the provision of novel means for operatively hinging the screen frame' within its casing whether 'the same be4 applied to a door or a window.
These and other objects and advantages will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is more clearly understood from the following description takenin connection with the accompanying drawings lwherein there is disclosed one embodiment of the invention, but which is susceptible to numerous variations and modifications in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts thereof to meet the exigencies of the case without departinmfrom the spirit of the invention or excee g the scope of the ap ended claims.

The lcasing for the screen frame consists of .the side bars'3and the top bar/l. The side bars 3 and the top bar 4 are formed of a stripk of metal ,which is bent substantially along its longitudinal medial line and the Wings thus provided are folded upon each other and in close contact and thereby providing an inner member and an outer member, the outer member of the side bars 3 being formed with the corrugation or hollow rounded bead 5 and'interposed within the' corrugation or hollow bead 5 and between the inner member of the side bars 3 are the reinforcing rods or bars 6. The top bar 4 of the casing is likewise provided with the inner. and outer members similar to the side bars 3 and has its `outer member also provided with l'the corrugation or hollow bead 5 and within which is also a reinforcing rod or bar 6. This constitutes the casing for the screen door frame and the side bars 3 and top bar 4 of the casing are suitably secured to the side posts andthe top of the door frame through the medium of the securing members 7 which may beV nails, screws or `other suitable securing means. The beads 5 provide seats for the marginal beads of the screen frame.
Designed to be mounted upon the casing and within the corrugations or hollow beads 5 Ais the screen door frame which consists of the corru lline but closely the side rails 8 the top rail 9 and the bottom formed with inner and outer members, the
outer members of the rails 8, 9 and 10 of the screen door frame being provided with the corrugations or hollow beads 13, similar to ations or hollow beads 5 of the bars of t e casing, and positioned within the corrugations or hollow beads 13of the rails of the screen door frame and interposed between the inner and outer members thereof are the reinforcing rods or bars 14. There are, however, interposed between the inner edge portion of the inner members of the respective rails of the screen door frame on the one hand and the inner edge portion of the outer members of the respective rails and the reinforcing rods 14 of the screen door frame on the other hand, the respective edges of the screen 15, and for binding the respective edges of the screen `15 between these members 'of the respective rails'8, 9 and 10 are the bolts 16 which project through the members of the rails 8, 9 and 10 and the respective edges of the screen 15, but rivets or other suitable securing members may be employed in lieu of the bolts 16, so that when the securing members 16 are firmly fastened through the inner and outer members of the rails 8, 9 and 10 and the respective edges of the screen 15, the respective edges'of the screen 15 will not only be efficiently secured between the members of these rails, but in addition thereto the reinforcin rods 14 will so bind against the edges of t e screen 15 as to draw and maintain the screen 15 taut within the screen door frame.
The bottom rail 10 of the door frame is made somewhat wider than the top rail 9 and therefore the inner aud outer members of the rail 10 are additionally secured together through the medium of the bolts or rivets 17 or any other suitable securing means. The top rail 9 and the bottom rail 10 are provided, in addition to the corrugations 13, with the right angular corrugations 18somewhat wider than the corrugations 13 so as to overlap the adjacent portions of the corrugations 13 at the meeting points of the responsive rails of the screen frame. To additionally reinforce the screen door the reinforcing bar 19 is provided and which is formed in a similar manner -to that of the rails of the screen door frame and is pro- `rugation 27 reinforce vided with the longitudinally extending corru ation 20 in whlch is seated a reinforcing ro or filler for adding strengthto the reinforin bar 19, the -bar 19 being secured to the si e rails 8 and the screen 15 by the bolts or rivets 21, and adjacent the securing ends of the bar 19- are the transverse corrugations 22 for overlapping the corrugations 13 of the rails 8. The screen door is hingedly connected to the screen-door frame through the medium of the sprin hinges 23 having one of their wings 'suita ly secured to one of the side rails 8 of the screen door and their other wings suitably secured to the adjacent side bars 3 of the casing, the opposite side rail of the door being provided with any suitable form of handle or knob 24. Upon the door sill 2 is suitably secured by the screws 25 the threshold plate 26, formed in the same manner that the rails of the screen door are formed and rovided with the cord) by the rod or filler 28. The threshold plate 26 is so positioned upon the door sill 2 and in alinement with the inner edges of the side bars of the casing that when the door' is in closed rounded edge 12 of the bottom rail 10 will abut against and snugly engage the corrugation 27 of the threshold plate 26.
In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown the adaptation of the invention to a window, and in this instance the construction of the casing for the window screen frame as well as `the screen frame itself are identical t0 the construction of the casing and the screen door frame shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, with the exception that whenemploying the invention as a window screen the casing and the window screen frame are made slightly smaller and the casing is attached to the respective parts of the window frame, but when employing the invent-ion as a window screen the top rail 9 of the window screen frame is secured to the top bar 4; of the casing through the medium of the hinges 29 in lieu of the hinges 23 shown in Fig. 1, and also the reinforcing bar 19 which is provided when employing the invention as a screen door is preferably omitted when employing the invention as a window screen. However, in lieu of the threshold plate 26 which I provide for the door sill for vthe screen door to abut against, I employ, in this instance, the abuttingplate 30 secured to the outer face of the window sill 31 by the nails or screws 32, and while this plate is also formed of a strip of metal folded upon itself, the same is provided in its upper folded edge 33 with the reinforcing rod or iiller 34, the upper portion of the abutting plate 30 being, however, bent inwardly over the upper face of the window sill 31 and in a manner to position the reinforced edge33 just rearwardly of the lower edge of the window screen frame, so that the y lower edge of the window screen frame will lsnugly engage the upper edge portion of the abutting plate 30 when in closedposition', and to provide for the escape of any rain water or the like which may lodge upon the window sill 31 there is provided in the abutting plate 30 a plurality of apertures 35.
- From the foregoing it will be seen that I bronze so that the screen door or screen window will not have to be renetted, and,
therefore, it willbe seen that the device is practically indestructible and While the same is formed of materials somewhat more costly than wood the lasting qualities of the device renders the samepractically costless. Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A screen construction embodying a screen frame including a sheet metill plate doubled on a longitudinal line' with the` wings extending inwardly, the bend of the in'said bea. one wing of said plate having a corrugatlon near the edge thereof2 a rod in said corrugation, a screen extending between the edges of said wings, and between the second named rod'and one wing, and means clamping said 'wings together and clamping sald screen and rods therein.
