Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JIM B. FULLER, OF NOBWICH, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMNT IN ARGAND-LAMP BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,265, dated September 10, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Argand-Lamp Burners, invented by JIM B. FULLER, of Norwich, in the county of New London, and State of Connecticut.
First, my improvement consists in a wicktube so constructed and arranged as to receive a flat wick when folded together in a peculiar manner herein shown, and confined in theproper position by means of a dividingplate, also hereinafter described, whereby the toothed wheels operating upon the folds of the wick carry the wick up and around the central airtube so as to produce an Argand flame.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a burner containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the central air-tube, showing the guide for spreadingthe wick; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through .t w, showing the manner in which the wick is folded in the wick-tube.
I have omitted arrangements for holding a chimney, as my invention has lno reference to that part of a burner.
a represents an ordinary exterior shell of an Argand-lamp burner, the lower end of which is fitted to screw into the collar of` the lamp. b is the interior air-tube, also of common construction, With an air-inlet, c, at the lower end. d is a wick-tube constructed at the lower end similar to ordinary tubes for using flat wicks, except that there is a dividin g-plate, d', placed withinl the tube, substantially as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, for the purpose of keeping the wick in the required position, so that the toothedwheels e e will carry it up evenly. f
is a guide attached to the lower end of the airtube, or other convenient point above the toothed wheels, so as to spread open the folds of the wick, carrying the edges outward so that they will easily pass up around the air tube.
I am aware that burners are in use in which a tia-t wick is folded and in which a divisionplate is used; but such wicks are folded at the center so that the edges shall come together at one edge of the wick-tube and at one edge of the folded wick, and the division-plate is placed between the flat surfaces of the wick and at one edge of the wick-tube, and is intended 'to keep apart the flat surfaces of the wick. In my wick-tube it will be seen that the dividing-plate is placed at the center of the tube and at right angles with the iiat surfaces of the wick, the wick being folded so that' Witnesses:
