CHARLES DECKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. lSLQB, dated September l0, 1872.
To all whom t may concern: A
Be it known that I, CHARLEs DECKER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and "Improved Presser-Foot for Sewing Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication, in which drawing- Figure l represents a plan or top view of Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig'. 3 is a transverse section of the same in the plane aux, Fig. l.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a serrated or rough surface roller, which has its bearings in a slide that tits the presser-foot, said roller being situated behind an aperture made in the slide for the passage of the needle in such a manner that by said roller the operation of feeding the material through the machine is materially facilitated, and at the same time the roller can be readily removed whenever it is desirable. Said roller is provided with a needle-groove, so that the same can be set as close to the needle as may be required to insure its perfect action.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a presser-foot, of any desirable form or construction, to correspond to'the class of sewing-machines for which the same is to be used. This presser-foot is made bifurcated, and between its prongs is tted a slide, B, .which forms the bearings for a rough surface-roller, C. This roller is close behind a hole, a, in the slide B, said hole beingintended for the passage of the needle 5 and when the presser-foot is in position and allowed to bear down upon the material to be sewed, the'roller C co-operates with the feed-dog or feed-wheel of the sewingmachine, and assists in passing said material through under the needle; and furthermore, on account of its location back of the needle, said roller draws the material awayfrom the needle, and the regularity of the feeding operation is insured. In the roller C is made a deep semicircular groove, b, corresponding in width and position to the needle-hole a in the slide B; a-nd by these means I am enabled to bring-the roller C close to the needle-hole, and to allow said roller to act on the material to be sewed in close proximity to the needle. The slide B is provided with a large recess, c, in front of the needle-hole, so that the material to be sewed can be observed close up to the needle, and the person operating the sewing-machine can watch the progress of the work with ease and facility. If the roller C is not to be used the slide B can be readily removed and another device can be inserted into the presserfoot, so that my roller-slide does not interfere with any other operation that may have to be performed on the sewing-machine.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a presser-foot, of a slidecarrying a roller, which is situated behind a hole made in said slide for the passage of the needle, the whole being constructed and operating substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
