Description

T. Y. FOOK.
SPFHNG HlNGE. APPLlCATlON FILED JUNE 26, 1918.
1 12,392. Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
I Wz'tzienes I Q V A? Tom X F001 WTED E F TOM YEN FOOK, OF MESA, ARIZONA,
SPRING-HINGE.
To all whom it ma concern: r f
Be it known t at I, ToM YEN F001;,- a citizen of the United States, resi'din at Mesa, in the county of-Maricopa and tate of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spring hinges. r i a The object of the invention is to provide spring hinges of the type known on the market as FThe King and others with simple" and efiicient means for securing themto the door and its jamb in connection with which the hinge is to be used to insure their retention in operative position.
Withjthe foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description I proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a portion of a door and its jam'b with a hinge embodying this invention-shown applied,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section takenon the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one member of the hinge, and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of a portion of the other member.- h
In the embodiment illustrated, the hinge constituting) the invention is shown applied to a door and its jamb J and comprises two plates. 1 and 2 connected by a pintle 1 3 presently to be described, and having smooth apertures for securing them respectively to the jamb and to the door.
The late 1 has apertured ears 4 extending from t e edges of its opposite ends in the same direction at right angles to the plate, which are designed to receive the pintle which connects the two plates. A spring barrel or cover 3 is carried by the edge of plate 1 intermediate its ends on which the pintle receiving ears are mounted, and an attachingplate 5 extends laterally at right angles from the edge carrying the barrel 3 in a direction opposite to said barrel, and which Specification of Letters Patent.
is apertured as shown at 6 to receive screws 6' which fasten it to the door jamb, as shown in Fig. 2.
body portion and plate 5, respectively, said plate 5 being engaged with the edge of the jamb, and the body portion of plate 1 with its outer face. When in this osi-tion the pintle receiving ears. 4: and the arrel 3 extend beyond the outer face of plate 1 in the Patented Aug. 5, 11919.
Application filed June 26, 1918. Scriai No. 241,971.
Theplate 2 has spring barrels 8 and 9 at position shown in Figs. 1 and 2'. The plate 2 is then secured to the door D in a similar manner, plate 10 lying against the edge of the door which is to be hinged, and plate 2 against its outer face, so that the fastening screws which attach plates 1 and 10 to the door extend in planes at right angles to each other, and thereby securely hold the plate engaged with the door. The door is then I placed in position with the barrels 8 and 9 of its hinge member 2 alined with the barrel 3 of the jamb carrying hinge member 1. When these parts are so positioned the apertured ears 7 of plate 2 lap the ears 4 of plate 1 and the pintle 13 is passed through the apertures therein. this connecting the door hingedly to the 'jamb, and preventing all danger of the hinge members becoming detached. h I
A coiled spring 12 is mounted in the registering barrels 8, 3 and 9 with its ends secured sothat the spring will exert its tension to normally close the door.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, ma-
terials, dimensions, etc, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention.
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I cfiiim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A hin e of the class described comprising hinged flares apertured to receive fastening screws, pint-1e receiving ears extending in the same direction substantially at right angles from their end edges, the ears of one leaf adapted to la those of the other when in operative position, the'overlapping ears flarin slightly towardtheir free ends, one of sai leaves having anattachingfplate extending at right angles from one, side edge thereof near one end, and in a direction 0pposed to said ears andapertured to receive attaching screws, :1 spring barrel on the opposite face of said leaf spaced from the end thereof, the other leaf having an attaching plate at one edge midway its ends, the attaching plates of the two leaves being located in vertical planes one above the other when the members are assembled, and spring barrels arranged adjacent each end of the second mentioned leaf member, the barrels of the two leaves alining when the parts are assembled.
