BOILER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD D. REED, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Westfield, county: of Hampden, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in boilers, and: especially such as are adapted for house or building heating.

In the embodiment of the invention selected for illustration, a denotes the com plete boiler comprising a base section b, a fire-pot section 0, water-jacketed and open at its top, a dome section d which is adapted to fit upon the fire pot section and form a top therefor, and 6 denotes an intermediate section which may be interposed between the fire pot section and the dome section. 1 de notes the fire pot, 2 the water-jacket, 3 the firing door. The intermediate section 6 consists of a water chamber 5 through which a flue opening 6 is formed, the upper face of which is recessed to form the bottom and sides of a fine 7, as clearly seen in Figs. 4:, 5, 6. This intermediate section fits onto the fire pot section, the water chamber forming a top for the fire pot section and the flue opening 6 being located over the rear of the fire pot. 8 is a clean-out door.
The dome section (Z fits onto the intermediate section 6 and the bottom 11 forms the top of the flue 7, of which the flue 12, formed in and as a part of the dome section, is a continuation. The flue 12 springs from the front of the dome section and then passes upwardly and transversely, at a slight downward inclination, to the smoke bonnet 13 to which is connected the smoke pipe. Preferably this flue is given the branch shape shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in order that Specification of Letters Patent.

and preferably the return connection at the rear of the boiler is at a lower level than the supply connections at the front of the boiler in order to permit of the complete drainage of the sections and the complete filling of the boiler and elimination of .air pockets. It will also be noted that the rearboss 16 on the dome section forms a support, and in fact a portion of the smoke box structure.

while for use. as a steam plant, the upper' P n of the dome is reserved for the steam sup l a y y It will be seen that this sectional construction of the boiler produces a vertical body of water through which the gases are forced to travel transversely in a reversed path by the peculiar arrangement of the fines 7. 12, which constitute a substantially continuous S-shaped flue; that the fire and gases first impinge upon the water chamber of the intermediate section, then passing through the flue opening 6 into the flue 7, they impinge against the bottom of the dome section and then pass through the branch flue 12, yielding their heat to the water which surrounds this flue. This produces a large vertical water-way and a lateral fire travel of maximum elfective extent, and the downward inclination of the exit end of the branch flue 12 adds materially to the effective operation of the boiler. The connections of the several sections are made outside of the boiler, where they can be readily reached by tools and permit of. producing a strong tight mechanical joint and facilitate the disconnection of the sections for the purpose of renewal of parts, cleaning or re pair. The boiler here shown, and preferably, is a cast structure of circular form, to better withstand strains, and represents high efliciency in the heating or evaporation of air.
I am aware that the structure here selected for illustration is susceptible of various modifications without departing from the scope of the invention: as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A sectional boiler including a water jacketed fire pot section, an upper section fitted thereto and forming a water chamber, said water chamber having a bottom adapted to form atop for said fire pot section, and a flue extending transversely through said water chamber, said flue being branched in its central-portion to surround a portion of said' water chamber and being open at one end through said bottom to the fire pot section.
2. A boiler including a lower water j acketed fire pot section open at itstop, anupper. section fitted thereto and forming a watenchamber, said chamber having abottom adapted to form a top for said lower section, a flue extending transversely through said water chamber and open at one end through the bottom of said water chamber to the fire pot section.
3. A vertical sectional boiler comprising a base a water-jacketed fire pot section mounted thereon and having an opentop, an intermediate section whose bottom forms a closure for the top of said fire pot section, a vertical flue passage through said intermediate section, a transverse flue formed in part in the upper surface thereof, and
communicating with said vertical flue passage, a water chamber between said flue and fire pot, a dome section fitted to the intermediate section and forming a top forthe flue therein, a water chamber in said dome section, a flue extending transversely through said dome section and connecting at one end with the first mentioned flue, said dome section fiue being branched to surround a portion of the dome section water chamber, and means for connecting the water chambers of the various sections 4:.
