Be it known that I, J AMES T. -JOHNSON,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county otGook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements =1I1f' Automatic Spark- Arresters for Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates-to new and useful improvements in automatic spark arresters for saws.
The primary object of the invention is the provisionof an inexpensive device adapted for employmentlin COIIIIEClBlOIl with any saws WlllCll produce sparks durlng the operatlon thereof, the construction being such that by pneumatic andmagnetio control of the thesafety of sparks thrown offby the saw, the workmen as well as theadjacent property is fully safeguarded' A further object of the'deviceis the pro vision of a spark collector for rotary saws employed with steel mill machinery such as rolling, blooming and rail mills as well as structural mills, whereby the sparks thrown ofi in sawing either' hot or cold metals will be automatically collected and the attendants permitted to remain near the saw during the cutting operationregardless of the excessive heat generated by the saw;
A still further objectis' the provision of a magnetic and pneumatic spark controlling and collecting means for rotary metal saws whereby the saw will have greater efficiency 16 and I'Tpass over a roller 23 carried by and the operatives will be fully protected.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood the device consists of the novel" combination and ar rangement of: parts hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out I 1n the appended claims.

Referring more in detail to thedrawings, it will'beufirst understood that thedevice is adapted for employment with any form of saw such as the circular rail cutting "saw 10 having a sharpened periphery 11, the saw having a central operating shaft 12 ada ted for swinging movement mounted means of anarm 13 depending'from a suitably located support 14. A cylindrical cas= ing15 preferably formed'o-f' thin metalis arranged arounolthe saw 10and journaled upon the shaft 12 being supported for simultaneous swinging movement with the saw by means of cords 16 and 171 The cord 16 is attachedto the forwardside of the casing l5as at 18 and to a stationary post 19 I rearwardly ofthe casing whilethe cord 17' is attached'to the rear side of'the casing-as at 20andto a lever 21 by means of-which the-saw is adapted to be shifted as at 22. It will understoodthatboth ofthe cords shown in Fig: 1.
A trough 27 is supported stationarily with the casinglt'y arranged for swinging movement therein, a curved follower 28 being arranged through theslotted bottom of the trough 27 for engaglng the casinglfi. The rename 28 is arranged with a hub 29 noted that this journaled upon a shaft 30 while the spring 31 is tensioned between the wheel 32 of the follower and a stationary member 33 for maintaining the follower against the rear side of the casing and assisting the forward movement of the latter as illustrated by dotted lines in F ig. l of the drawings.
The casing 15 is preferably arranged with one side 34 thereof hinged as at 35 to the main portion of the casing while the side 34 is formed in two semi-circular sections con neeted together by hinges 36.
The trough 27 within which the casing 15 freely swings is formed in two parts which may be connectedtogether in any desired manner such, for instance, as being mounted upon jthe:electro-magnet 37 which is em ployed for collecting the sparks which magnet thereby forms a portion of the closed bottom of the trough 27, the sides of the trough being secured tothe magnet in removable manner by means of. hold-fast de vices such as bolts 38. It will be understood that the'electro-magnet 37and the trough 27 may be mounted in any desired manner, it being understood that the sparks from the saw 10 will be attracted and collected by the,electro;magnet 37 at the bottom of the trough-as well as by the'forwardly positionedbasin 39 carried by the said trough.
A saw-run 40 of the usual miter-box form r is arranged through the basin-39 and provided with transverse slots 41 through which the saw 10 is passed in cutting'metal, such as rails and steel bars longitudinally moved through the run 40. I
The: opposite sides of the casing 15 are cutaway as at 42 permitting the cutting edge 11 of the saw 10 to be exposed for cut ting the. metal: within the run 40, it being cut-away portion forms a mouth in the casing 15 which receives the run 40 and permits the saw 10 to operate through the adjacent slot 41 of the run when such slot'is arranged within the basin 39, it beingunderstood that the latter is suitably channeled for the reception of both casing and saw. Receiving sockets 43 are provided in the upper edges ofthe trough 27 adapted to receive slide plates 44 for covering up the cut-away portions 42 and preventing the escape of the sparks therethrough.
Thehood 45 is hinged as at 46 to the forward end. or nose 47 of the basin 39 being normally maintained inits closed position by means of a leaf spring 48 and overlying the run 40. f A; finger 49 is carried by the casing 15 forwardly of the cut-away portion 42 projecting within the hood 45 for raising;;the hood by contact of the finger with the hood as the saw and casing move forwardly" while a handle 50 is also provided for the hood. i 1 V V g :1 ;A-jcompressejd' air pipe'51 is' arranged for blowing forwardly toward the electro-magnet 37, the sparks which are generated by the saw 10 and a multiple nozzle 52 is arranged within the casing 15 upon either or both of the sides thereof adjacent the saw connectedto the pipe 51 by means of a flexible hose 53. It will be understood that the sparks flying rearwardly will be met by the forward current of air from the nozzle 52 being thereby baffled and caused to fall within the influence of the electro-magnet 37, as well as being partly cooled by the air prior to'their deposit upon the magnet as well as within the basin 39.
It is designed to maintain the electrical current in connection with the electro-magnet 37 for energizing the magnet simulta neously with the supply of air to the nozzles 52 and this is automatically accomplished by the mechanism best illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings. The aforementioned shifting lever 21 has an upward extension 54 having an arcuate movement adjacent a curved segment 55, while the said segment has a transmission plate 56 extending partially the length of the segment and upon the opposite side thereof from the extension 54 adapted for wiping engagement by a contact 57 of a block 58 carried by such extension.
It will be understood that the source of electrical supply for the electroanagnet 37 is connected with the contacts 56 and 57 by means of wires also attached to the bindingposts 68 of the electro-magnet 37, substantially 59 so that during the entire movement of the lever 21, the electrical connections for the electro-magnet 37 will be complete, only being interrupted when the neutral end portion 60 of the segment 55 is reached by the lever extension 54 and its block 58.
7 An air valve 61 is provided at the neutral end 60 of the segment for controlling the air supply to the pipe 51 connected to the valve, it being noted that the valve is normally open to the source of air supply from a pipe 69 and the supply of air through the the casing 15 and the saw 10 but the electro- 'magnet will automatically be deenergized and the air pressure interrupted when the casing 15 returns to its normal position.
It will be understood that the side 34 of the saw cover casing 15 is adapted to be locked closedibymeans ofa'a suitable-lock 68 while thesides of the troughi27 may be con: nected byhi1iges-69 with the basin 39.
A serviceable spark collector for saws is arranged wherein substantially all ofwthe thereof.
"What I claim as new is 1. A spark collector for saws comprising an electro-magnet adapted for positioning adjacent a saw, a pneumatic draft appliance directed toward the said electromagnet whereby oncoming metallic par ticles are baflied adjacent the electro-magnet.
2. In combination with a cutting saw, an electro-magnet arranged adjacent the cutting area thereof and apneumatic draft ap pliance directed toward the said electromagnet against the path of travel of sparks generated by the saw.
In combination with a saw, a casing therefor arranged with a cut-away mouth portion, an electro-magnet adjacent the said mouth and a pneumatic nozzle carried by the casing rearwardly of the mouth directed toward the electro magnet.
4. In combination with a saw, a casing therefor arranged with a cut-away mouth portion, an electro-magnet adjacent the said mouth, a pneumatic nozzle carried by the casing rearwardly of the mouth directed toward the electro-magnet, shiftable mounting means for the saw, a controlling valve for the pneumatic means and an electrical switch for the electro-magnet and means adapted for closing the valve and opening the switch when the saw is in its normally inoperative position.
5. A spark collector comprising in com bination with a swinging rotary saw, a casing surrounding the same having a hinged side and adapted for swinging movement with the saw and further having a cut-away mouth exposing the forward cutting portion of the saw, a trough Within which the casing is shiftably arranged, a saw-run transversely positioned with respect to said trough having a transverse slot in advance of the saw, an electro-magnet carried by the trough beneath the saw and pneumatic nozzles carried by the hinged side of the casing directed toward the electro-magnet.

A spark collector comprising in combin ation with a swinging rotary saw, a casing surrounding the same having a hinged side and adapted for swinging movement with the saw and further having a cut-away mouth exposing the forward cutting portion of the saw, a trough within which the casing is shiftably arranged, a saw-run trans versely: positionedi with respect to said] troughwhavin'g atransverse slot in advance oflthe sawg an electroqnagnet carrip d by the trough beneath the saw, pneumatic nozzles carried by thehmged slde of the caslng d1- rected toward the electr-o-magnet, a norma'lly resiliently closed lrood forw ardly of said mouth overlying the run, a propelling finger carried by the casing forwardly of the lower rear portion of the casing and automatic controlling means for the said electro-magnet and nozzles.
7. A spark collector comprising in combination with a swinging rotary saw, a casing surrounding the same having a hinged side and adapted for swinging movementwith the saw and further having a cut-away mouth exposing the forward cutting portion of the saw, a trough within which the casing is shiftably arranged, a saw-run transversely positioned with respect to said trough having a transverse slot in advance of the saw, an electro-magnet carried by the trough beneath the saw, pneumatic nozzles carried by the hinged side of the easing directed toward the electro-magnet, a normally resiliently closed hood forwardly of said mouth overlying the run, a propelling finger carried by the casing forwardly of the month Within the said hood a spring-pressed follower in normal ien gagement with the lower rear portion of the casing, a lever adapted for shifting'the said casing and saw, a segment adjacent the swinging end of said lever, an air controlling 'valve for said nozzles adjacent one end of the segment adapted for operative closing engagement by the said lever when the saw is in its inactive position, an electrical terminal plate for said magnet carried by said segment terminating in spaced relations with the said valve carried under thereof and the other terminal of said electro-magnet carried .by said lever end in contact with said plate throughout the length of the latter and out of contact with said plate when the lever is positioned adjacent the said valve.
8. A spark collector comprising in combination with a swinging rotary saw, a casing surrounding the same having a hinged side and adapted for swinging movement with the saw and further having a cut-away mouth exposing the forward cutting portion of the saw, a trough within which the casing is shiftably arranged, a saw-run transversely positioned with respect to said trough having a transverse slot in advance of the saw, an electro-magnet carried by the hinged side of the casing directed toward the electro-magnet, a lever adapted for shifting the said casing and saw, a segment -th e"-mouthwithin the said hood, spring -pressed follower in normal engagement with ,tion, an electrical terminal adjacent the swinging end of said lever, an
