Be it known that I, FRANK R. BATCHEL- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Carriers for Machine-Gun Magazines, of which the following is a specification, .reference being had therein ing drawings.

The invention provides a container and carrier of novel character and construction for cartridge magazines of the type used in Lewis machine guns, namely those having the shape of thick disks or short cylinders.

The said container and carrier has been designed with reference to holding a convenient number of such magazines, and more especially with reference to being used in carrying them manually from one point to another, as for example from a base to a firingline.

The general objects of the invention are to provide a light, strong, durable, easily manipulated carrier for magazines such'as aforesaid; also, one that is collapsible and capable of being packed in a minimum of space. Various other objects and advantages of the invention are set forth in the following description.

The invention consists, essentially in a non-metallic container and carrier made of woven webbing and having the construe tional characteristics which are described with reference to the embodiment thereof that is shown in the drawings and pointed out in the claims at the close of the specification.

In the preferred form, shown in the draw ings, the body of the carrier is cylindriform. It is of proportions adapting it to receive within it a plurality of magazines lying horizontally and Stacked flatwise one on top of another. The shape in horizontal cross- Seetion may be varied in practice.

The carrier comprises essentially, an annular body 1, a closed bottom 2, a cover 3, means for retaining such cover in closed condition, a plurality of strips 4, 4, extending across t e bottom of the carrier and upwardat the sides of the latter, and a suspensory loop, bail, or handle-"100p 5. The bottom.2 is secured in place at- .the lower. end of the carrier-body, as by stitches. The strips 4, 4, are shown as crossing each other at right angles at the underslde of the said bottom. They are fastened in place by stitches or other convenient fastenings which serve to secure them to each other at the place of crossing, and to the bottom and the upright portion of the carrier-body. A strip, as 4, is extended upward above the top of the carrier-body to constitute the suspensory loop, bail, or handle-loop 5. The ends of the strip 4 are shown overlapped with each other at 3 beneath the bottom 2 of the carrier, and secured together and to the said bottom. One end of the strip 4 is shown as terminating at the top edge of the carrier-body, at the front of the latter, the other end thereof being shown engaged with the cover 3, as by lapping over upon the top of the cover and being fastened thereto by stitches, as shown. It thereby connects the cover flexibly to the carrier-body at the back of the latter, and constitutes a species of hinge-connection between the cover and the carrier-body.

The cover 3 is flanged or hood-like, its flange extending down around the upper portion of the carrier-body. The cover comprises a disk-shaped top and a depending flange 3. The flange is composed of a U- shaped strip, preferably woven in that shape, and receives between the free edges of its two sides or plies the clown-turned margin of the said disk-shaped top, the three thicknesses being fastened together by means of stitches 3". A line or lines of Stitches 3 extends around the flange close to the line of fold. The upper margin of the strip of webbing constituting the bodyband 1 is turned back upon itself as at 1*, Figs. 1 and 3, to thicken and reinforce the top of the carrier-body, and cover the top end of the front portion of strip 4.

The means of retaining the cover in closed condition may vary in practice. Herein such means comprises a retainer strap 5 and a buckle 6. The retainer strap is made-fast by one end to the top of the cover, under. the front end of the portion of strip 4 which lies upon said top. The buckle 6 is connected with the front ofthe carrierbody. In this instance it is mounted upon the vertical portion of strip 4 at the front of the carrier-body.

What is claimed as the invention is i- A carrier for machine-gun magazines having a carrier-body of woven fabric, and a cover comprising a disk of woven fabric and a depending flange which fits the top of the carrier-body and is constituted by a U-shaped strip embracing between its two plies or sides the margin of the said disk.
