CHARLES L. WOODS, 0F PENSACOLA, FLORIDA.
BOAT WITE' STABILIZING-PONTOONS.
Applicaton filed April 24,
.Be it knownthat I, CHARLES L. \Voons, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State ofFlorida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boats with Stabilizing-Pontoons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boats and has more especial reference to antimproved ballasting means therefor.
The dominant object of the invention is to provide ballasting means of the float type for boats irrespective of the design and purpose thereof, whereby, the same will be enabled to navigate open Waters without liability of swamping or capsizing and yet, will be permitted to attain a maximum rate of speed.
Another and equally important object of the invention is to provide novel brace means for securely maintaining the buoyant ballast in proper position with relation to the hull of the boat.
It is also an object of the invention to provide supplemental buoyant means, which, in the event of the disabling of the mainballast will engage the surface of the water and prevent cafpsizing of the boat.
It is a more speci 0 object of the invention to provide a ballast of the character i mentioned, so arranged as to afford greater deck room for the boat and to permit the addition of more cabin space and allow the heavy loading thereof without danger of overturning.
Other and further improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the description to follow, which for a clear understanding of the invention should be considered in connection with the acco1n panying drawings forming a part hereof and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is shown for the purpose of illustration.
In the drawings;
Figure 1 is a top plan of a boat with my improved ballast applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section therethrough; and l Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same with parts thereof broken away and shown in section.
With more particular reference to the drawings wherein like reference numerals Specification of Letters Patent.

respective positions through the mediumof diagonally,disposcd beams 5, the upper. extremities of which are engaged by suitable =unionszwith themasts: 3. Supplemental. air chambers 6 are arranged over the pontoons 4 and are provided with air exhausting valves 7 for an obvious purpose, it being noted in this connection that the extremities of the beams 5 are secured thereto. A deck 8 is extended over the hull 1 and the pontoons 4 and is provided with an outer guard wall 9.
To the opposite extremities of the pontoons 1 eyelets 10 are secured and are engaged by a truss cable 11 extending forwardly of the hull 1 and through suitable guide brackets 12 formed thereon. Turnbuckles 13 may be and preferably are interposed in the cables 11 whereby the same may be placed under the desired tension.
To prevent straining, either upward or downward of the hull 1, beams 14 are fastened to said hull at the bow and stern portions thereof and to the tops of masts 3 and from the top of one mast to the top of the other.
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated by workers in the art, that I have provided a novel ballasting means for boats, whereby a greater deck space will be afforded the boat and as a consequence, the same may be heavily loaded without liability of overturning. Further, the construction may be advantageously used for freighting purposes, allowing the freight to be stored upon the deck of the boat and not in the hold thereof. The arrangement of the pontoons 4: is such as to permit the building of the cabins higher with more stories to provide additional space and still prevent overturning of the boat either from heavy loading or rough water and further will allow the boat to attain a maximum rate of speed.
In the vent of disabling of the pontoons 4, the supplemental air chambers 6 will engage the surface of the Water and prevent capsizing of the boat.
It is to be understood, that the improved ballast may be used'upon boats varying in design and purpose and that when the same but of less length than the hull having its upper sides disposed laterally of said hull,
pontoons disposed longitudinally of the outer portions of said deck and secured to the lower face thereof, supplemental, air chambers on the deck over said pontoons,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
bracesconnected to the bow and stern porof the bottom of the hull.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature hereto.
CHARLES Woons.
