GATE MECHANISM,
L To'aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that IQJAfMEs'M. EDWARDS, acitizen of the United States, residing at New Yorkcity, in the county of New York and State iernewvork, have; invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gate Mechanism, of whichthe following is a specification, V i
This invention comprehends certain" new useful improvements in jmovablej gates for controlling the flow ofcomminuted or pulverulent materials or subs'tancessuch as grain, sugar, cofi'eje, "meal and the like, which 'liav'e aftendenc'y to clog in'passin'g from a bin or hopper into a spout or receptacle, the invention also being applicable 'for use in connection with the control of hot or cold air, steam, or other fiuids, as will be hereinafter more definitely specified.
Theinvention has for its primaryobject Va 'simple,-'durable and efficient construction of movablegate, the parts of which are so formed and arranged that the slide forming the 'movablefpart of the gate construction will not be. liable to become deformed with a consequent tendency to bind, and wherein the construction of the slide, together with ithejhousing inwhich itmov'es, are such as to facilitate at all timesthe "opening and closingmovement, as required, and positively preclude this liability to bind or stick. [A further object'of the invention is an improved 'gatebffthis character," which is providedwitha cut-ofi' projecting intothe opening across which the "slide ismounted to move, and so positioned and otherwise arranged and correlated with the slide, that all liability of the material to clog orcatch or to be cut or crushed,'will be effectually prevented. I i i f t l And'the invention also aims to generally "improve devices of this class so as torender'them more useful'and commercially desirable. H V V 7 With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and operations of the parts that'I 'shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which- 1 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 29, 1919, Ap'iflication fil eddMay 1, 1918. "sriai ire/231,897. it
Fig. 3 is a vertical section .on the line 3'3 of Fig. 1, and i d 1gig. a is a detail perspective view of the s 1 e.
' Corresponding and like parts are referred 'to in the following description and designated in all of the views of the accompanying drawing by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing in which, for the purposes of illustration I have shown. a conventional form of bin orhopper designated l and provided with the usual collar 2, the numeral 3 designates the casing or housing of my improved gate, said casing being formed in complemental members or castings designated 4 and '5 respectively. In the present embodiment of the invention, the device is shown as disposed in a relatively vertical position, and hence, for the purposes of distinction or identification, I shall hereinafter refer to the member 4 of the casing as the upper member and the member 5 as the'lower member, but it is to,
be understood that these terms are merely relative and not restrictive in any way.
The unner member a of the casing is, in the present instance, formed with a thimble or collar 6 secured in any desired way to the collar 2 of the bin or hopper 1, and the lower member 5 is correspondingly formed with a dependingcollar designed to be secured in'any desired way to a spout or receptacle through or into which the material is intended to flow. The two members 4 and 5 may be secured together in any desired way as, for example, by means of screw bolts 8 or similar fastening devices, so that they are held together in superposed relation with their openings defined by the collars 6 and 7 in alinement or registry with each other, and the lower member 5 is formed with longitudinally extending, relatively raised side edges -9'which abut against the lower surface of the upper member 4, wherebya transversely extendingspace 10 is'formed for the reception or accommodation of the slide 11 of the device. The lower member 5 is further formed with longitudinally extending openings 12, spacing the medial por tion of said member from the raised side edges 9, and in the upper face of the lower member longitudinal grooves 13 are formed, said grooves defining the adjoining side walls of the openings 12 as. clearly illustratedin the drawing.
The slide 11 is formed with longitudinally extending side flanges 14, disposed in angular relation to the body portion of theslide, and serving to strengthen the same and to especially prevent the slide from becoming warped, bent, or otherwise formed, and these flanges 14 Work freely in the openings 12 and with their edges inoving in the grooves 13 as shown. The slide 11 may be provided with any desired construction or design of handle 15, and may be moved manually or otherwise according to the requirements of the case. It is to be observed that the handle or flange 15 constitutes an abutment, to contact with the enlargement at the lower end of the collar 6, thereby limiting the gate in its movement toward a closed position.
Disposed within the collar 6 and preferably forming an integral part thereof, is a cut-off 16, which projects into the opening formed in and extending through the casing 3, with its lower flat face or surface terminating flush with theupper boundary of the space10, across which the slide 11., is adapted to move, whereby as will be manifest, when the slide is moved inward to close the opening, its innermost edge will first meet the cut-off 16, so as to stopthe flow of material and permit the material that would otherwise be caught at this point to drop downwardly into the spout or receptacle, all clogging of the parts and any crushing or cutting of the material being thereby positively precluded. From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the operation and practical'advantagesof my improved gate will be apparent. As hereinbefore indicated, while I have illustrated the device as applied to n a bin or hopper for grainsor other granular comminuted or pulverulent substances or materials, yet the in vention is not limited to such use and is of equal" applicability with the same incidents 50.
of advantage, for use in controlling thepassage of'hot orcold air or steam through a blast orotherpi e, in which event all bindingof the slide consequent upon its corrosion will be prevented, for it is to be underf stood that the slide is permitted some play within the space 10 and openings 12 so that it will not be liable to catch or stick even though rusted, while at the same time the flanges 14 assist in facilitating the movement of the slide and prevent it from becoming bent or otherwise ideformed, which would cause it to bind.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be underbeing fore-shortened and offset'below" the flanged end ofthe othertsection, of a slide plate mountedlfor transversemov'ement between the sections andprovided with depending opposite flanges engaging and rest ing upon the bottoms of the channel guides for holding the slide plate in spaced relation between the sections and out of contact with the adjacent ends of the sections. 7
2. In a gate mechanism for grain chutes, the combination with apair of axially adjoined conduit sections, the adjoining ends .thereof being provided with flanges of corresponding shape, diametrically Iopposite portions ofthe end of onesection adjacent its'lfiangehaving opposite parallel channel guides, the inner walls, of. said guides, at diametrically opposite points, being fore-shortened and off-set with relation to the outer section at .diame'trically oppo sitepoints at right-angles to the channel guides being flush. with the fore-shortened off-set inner walls of the channel guides, whereby a grain gate receiving space open at bjothends is.
formed, of a grain slide gate comprisinga plate mounted for transverse movement in said gate receiving space andprovided with opposite parallel flanges fitting loosely in the channel guides, whereby the edges ofthe flanges of said gate may engage with the J ES M.- EDWARDS- .Copies of this patent maybe obtained for five cents each, by addressing the .fcommissioner of .Patents.
