IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY FOLDING-DOORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,114, dated September 3, 18 72.

SPECIFICATION.

To all to whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM MGM. OBRIEN, of San Francisco, San Francisco county, State of California, have invented Temporary Folding-Doors; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains, to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to a temporary arrangement of folding-doors, which is intended more particularly for use in banks and public buildings.

During the winter months in most countries, it is necessary to protect the doorways which open upon the street or into the open air with an arrangement of inside foldingdoors, in order to prevent the draft consequent on the frequent opening and closing of the door by persons passing in and out, from rendering the temperature of the room disagreeable to the occupants.

The usual method heretofore employed of obviating this difliculty has been to construct a permanent ante-room inside of the ordinary doors, and providing it with a second set of folding-doors; but this arrangement, although it serves every purpose during wet and disagreeable weather, is of no service when the weather is pleasant, but takes up a considerable room which would otherwise be valuable.

My invention consists in providing a tempoprovided with suitable doors, all of which can be folded back against the wall out of the way when it is not required, and be placed in position in a few moments when needed.

In order to more fully illustrate and explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing'forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows the temporary ante=room in position. Fig. 2 shows the ante-room folded back against the wall and cover elevated.

In order to provide a temporary or portable ante-room inside of the doors 0 G, I construct a series of folding-doors or partitions, D E, and D'- E, of panel or other suitable work, which are hinged together so as to form the two ends and one side of the room, while the main door forms the opposite side. The partitions D upon each side of the original doorway are, in the present instance,- represented as composed of a frame-work inside of which a door, F, is ,hung, so as to open inside of the main room, and in a direction at right angles to the outside door. The front or inside face of the ante-room is made in two parts, E and E, one of which is hinged to each of the side frames or doors D D, so that when the side doors are swung into place the two parts E E meet and form the front. Each of the parts E E can, if desired, be made of several parts, which may be hinged together. Bolts g, which pass down into the floor, serve to secure the parts in position, either when folded against the wall, or arranged to form an ante-room.

For giving the temporary parts more permanence when in place, hooks h, and eyes i are secured opposite each other on the meetso as to be hooked together, as shown.

The cover or roof 7c, of this temporary anteroom, is also hinged to the wall above the outer door, so that itcan be let down when it is required to form the roof of the room, or

raised up and secured against the wall when the room is removed or folded back. This cover may be simply a frame-inclosing a pane of glass so that when it is raised against the wall it will permit the light to pass through, in case there should be a transom over the door.

By this means I provide an arrangement of panels or doors which can be readily swung into position, and bolted together so as to form an ante-room, or thrown back out of sight against the wall, as required.
