Tova qmit anay concern." j Be it ,known that I,FRE1 MroliAnionx, a
citizen of theUnited States, and resident of Portland, in the county of. Multnomah and State of 1 Oregon, have invented certain newand useful f Improvements in Operating Means for Washi g-Machinestof which the following is a specification.
Thls inventionmelates to washing maimproved washing'machine or thq ed b;
" a ng. p unger yr The invention has for'its' dominant object to provide aflwashing, machine having reciprocal agitating plunger operable within thereceptacle of the machine by novel mech- I anismfor thoroughly circulating thedeanse; ing solution through and between the matter be1ng washed thereby.
Another important characteristic of the invention resides in the provision of a yieldable plunger operating connection whereby to allow slight relative movement of the plunger when the washing receptacle is filled with matter to be cleansed.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claim. 7
I In the drawings:
Figure l is a vertical section through the improved washing machine; and
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail and perspective of the connections between the reciprocal plunger operating means.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more specifically to the several figures of the said drawings a washing receptacle designated 1 is provided and is arranged upon a plurality of supporting legs 2. V A cover member 3 is normally arranged over the open upper end "of the washing receptacle-and is provided with a concentric opening, which has a housing element 4 arranged thereover, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. A
which is formedto constitute a rack 7. A
pinion 8 is rotatably mounted upon a stub shaft slidably mounted in a slot in the hous- I} r r fi nl fLet e n L-Patented July'ZZ, 1919. A uaheh amalg m? seriainaieana, p i ingf l and operated by a lever "8" and has fixedly connected thereto arms 9, the oppoj slt'e extremities of which are detachably engaged withjthe yoke 10 slid'ablefonthe rod 11 An expansible coiled spring 141 is arsaid rod 11 and has bearing upon a looking nut 15 turned into engagement with the I W p U :screw threaded portionorend of the rod 11. cl'nn'es and'hasmoreespecial' reference .to an o'hne side of theflwashing recepta l 1 an operating handlefor lever 12is secured throu'ghthe medium of a bracket 13 and has an opening formed adjacent the upper end of the same through whi h the adjacent por- "tion'ofthe rod 11 is passed;
Bearing brackets l.6,are. secured to the deeface of the washing receptacle 1 and have rotatably mounted therein shafts car- .mounted on the opposite end of the shaft carrying the gear 18 for an obvious purpose. A pitman 19 is pivotally engaged with the lower end of the operating handle 12 and with the gear 17 to allow the transmission ofmotion from the same by way of the operating handle to the reciprocal plunger work ing within the washing receptacle.
Within the washing receptacle 1 a perforate rack 20 having a plurality of legs 21 carrying pulleys upon their lower ends is arranged and is adapted to normally rest upon the bottom of the receptacle. A cable 22 secured to the upper portion of the washing receptacle is passed downwardly therein about the pulleys arranged upon the legs 21 and bent upwardly along the opposite side of the washing receptacle through a suitable opening formed therein into engagement with a Windlass 23 secured to the outer face of said receptacle. Obviously, by rotating the Windlass through the medium of the handle attached thereto the cable will be In operation the handle 14 is rocked upon its pivot, thereby reciprocating the rod 11 and imparting oscillatory movement to the pinion 8, which by being in mesh with the I 'pable of considerable modification and such rack portion 7 of the plunger 5 Will raise and thoroughly agitating the cleansing solution contained-by the re-:
' cepzacle 1. When the clothes have been lower the same, thus,
ciently -W21Sl'18d 'the" cover 3 is removed from the receptacle and the plunger 5 is moved to its uppermost positionby sliding the gear 8 out of mesh with they rack, portion 7 of the plunger rod 6; At this time the yoke10.may be disengaged from the arms 9 and uninterrupted removal V of the cover 3 permitted. With the cover removed the Windlass 23 is rotated thereby winding the cable 22'about the same and elevating the perforate rack 20 in order that the {clothes [arranged on'the same may be easily and Copies of this patent' nia y be obtained'for fiveeents eachgfny' aiitdiressing the washingtonfllcfi with an openin'g forrned Q housing having slots formed in its sidewalls, the rod ofthe plunger extending upwardly into the hogsinggand through an opening 7 7 formed in "thetopthereof whereby to main- 1 tain the same against lateralmovement during sliding movement of the Plunger, a seg mentalf gearislidably rotatabl sup 7 wported Isaid slots in theihousing ali age "iii Said 'rec aa11avaga ma thereof formed with' a rack at lts'upper end 1a-cover forsaidreceptacle, a houslng aron, said cover and communicating ranged in the cover, said a tan conn c ed, .to said, gear, he geei, Y i one side j of the receptacle andfihavlng de- I can iarmcarriedby an; peratingthandle piv d t tachable connection with said arm, and "momentum :increasing means] secured to the lower portion 'ofthe receptacle and having connection with the lower end of Said operating lever;
