GEARING FOR WASHING MACHINES.
APPLICATION FILED NOVIQA 1906.
Patented Apr. 9, 1912 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 ion 22 fixed to said balance wheel.
ance wheel and said governor' gear wheel has ecccntrirally pivoted to it one end of a connecting link 25, the op1 ')ositc end of which is pivoted to the curved inner end ot' the rack bar f). i
lVhen in the practical use of my washing machine the operator actuates the hand lever l2 through the medium of its handle 14 by moving it to and fro, a reciprocatory move-.
ment is imparted to the rack bar 9- and said rack bar by meshing withthe pinion 8 tiXed to the spindle G of the agitator 5 operates to impart a rotary -motion to said agitator. As the rack bar moves inwardly and outwardly in a horizontal directionv it carries therewith the link 25 and said link acts to impart a rotary motion to the governor wheel 23, with the result ot' causing said governor wheel to in turn operate the balance wheel 20 through the medium of its cooperation with the pin- By the coperation of all of these parts as described a steady and uniform motion is imparted to the agitator of the washing machine and the operation ot the parts is readily continued with a minimumexpenditure of power.
When the machine is to be put into operation the hinged cover section 3 is placed in the lowered position illustrated in the drawings, and firmly held in a closed position by a catch 26 carried by the hinged cover secvtion'and arranged to engage a keeper 27 attached to the tub. When it is desired to open the machine the catch is released and the hinged cover section may be readily elevated due to the inverted U shaped socket 9K oithe connecting bar 9Z becoming detached from the pivoted cross pin 16 carried by the hand lever 12. The hinged cover section is then raised into a vertical position and the balance wheel 20 is brought t0 rest upon a rest plate 28 that is mounted on the stationary coversection 2. section and the gearing associated therewith lwill readily remain in the vertical position to which the parts have been moved without means for retaining them inv such position, thereby affording ready .access to the interior of the tub l.
29 is a wringer support that is attached to ythe tub 1 and which remains in a fixed position at all times so that a wringer may be readily applied theretofor use in wringing the clothes that have been washed in the machine after the hinged cover section has been elevated. I
In the modification illustrated in Figs.
III and I V, I utilize a horizontal segmental rack bar 9 that is arranged in mesh with the agitator operating pinion 8 and is carried by a Swingin arm 9'* which is pivotally attached to the hinged cover section of the machine at 9b. The rack Abar intliis form of construction operates in an arc of a circle to drive the agitator, as distinguished from the rthe hinged covery ipeaeae operation of the rack bar in a straight line.
. bar 9c. The remaining parts of thc gearing in the modification are similar in construction to those i'ircviously described'and further description otl these parts is deemed unnecessary.
I claiin l. A gearing for washing machines comprising a support, a vertical shaft mounted in the support, a pinion. fixed thereto, a rack in mesh with said pinion, a large gear wheel arranged in a horizontal plane, a balance wheel above the large gear wheel, a Apinion connected with the said balance 4wheel and in mesh with the large gear wheel, a pivoted operating lever operatively connected with said rack, and a pit-man connected at one end with said large gear wheel and at the other end with said rack at a point remote from said operating lever, whereby all of the operating devices mayy be contained under the balance wheel and be protected thereby.
2. The combination of a support, a lever ulcrumed to one `side of the support, an arm extended substantially horizontally over the support and having a hook at one end connected with said lever and detachable therefrom by being elevated, a rack connected to the other end of said arm, a vert-ical shaft extended above the support, a pinion thereon in mesh with the rack, a'balance wheel v arranged in a horizontal plane above the pinion, a small pinion on the balance wheel, a large pinion arranged in a horizontal plane below the balance wheel, and in mesh. with the small pinion on the balancewheel,
and a pitman connected and to the said rack.
3. The combination of a support, a hinged to the large pinion member on the support, a lever fulcruined to Y said rack, a balance wheel on top off the hinged portion, a small pinion connected therewith, the latter being iii mesh with said large pinion.
' 4. An operating device for Washing mai cliines, comprising a body, a. lever fulcriimed to the body, an upright shaft on top of the body, a pinion thereon, an oscillating rack Y Y fulcrumed tothe body and in mesh with the i pinion, a large pinion in a horizontal plane mounted on the body a balance wheel artiel@ ranged in u horizontal plano on the body above said largo pinion7 n small pinion oonnectod witlitlio balance whool and in n'iosli with the largo pinion, a pitn'iun pivotod to the oscillating rack und detaohubiy Connected with .smid lover, and a second pitlnzm pivoted to the first at one ond and pivotaliy (connected with tho large pinion at its other ond.
