' JOHN MEBKEL, OF ROBINSON, NORTH DAKOTA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
VENTILATOR.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed July 18, 1918. Serial No. 245,543.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MERKEL, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Robinson, in the county of Kidder and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a ventilator and has for its principal object the production of a. ventilator which will allow the air to slowly pass therethinough.
Another object of this invention is the production of means whereby the ventilator may be lengthened so as to fit different thicknesses of walls.
Another object of this invention is the production of simple and eflicient shaft brackets.
A still further object of this invention is the production of means upon the outer end of the ventilator for preventing flies, etc., from going through the ventilator and upon the innen end to provide means for closing said ventilator altogether.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists of certain novel coinbinations, constructions and anangemen'ts of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through the ventilator showing the same in a wall. 7
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device showing the same in a wall.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the ventilator with the screening detached.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the shaft bmacket.
Fig. 5 is a View of the outer end of the ventilator.
By referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals, it will be seen that 1 designates a wall into which is fitted the ventilator. This ventilator is provided with a drum 2 which drum is provided with the neck portion 3 upon Which neck portion 3 is mounted the door 4 by means of the hinge 5. This door l: is hingedly mounted upon the end inside the room and has for its object to close or open the ventilator as desired.
Upon the outer end of the ventilator is provided the screening 6 which is held in place by means of the band 7 and the sleeve 8, this sleeve 8 beingprovided with the flange 9 whlch will fit snugly [against the outer face 10 of the wall 1. It will be seen that if it is desired to lengthen the ventilator so as to fit the small differences which are necessarily found in the ordinary walls, that the sleeve 8 and band 7 may be pushed outwardly, sufficiently so that the flange 9 will fit snugly against the outer face of the wall 10. Inside the drum 2 there is provided the shaft brackets 11 upon which is mounted the shaft 12 which carries the fan wheel 13. By referring especially to Fig. 4.-, it will be seen that the shaft bracket 11 is formed from 2 strips of metal, the inner strip 14 is provided with an aperture 15 and is bent at its ends so as to form the right angular wings 16. The outer strip 17 is bent intermediate its ends so as to form the pocket 18 and is also bent at its ends so as to form the right angular wings 16. By referring especially to Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that these wings 16 extend flush with the outer ends of the drum 2 and will efliciently hold the bracket in its proper position. These strips 14 and 17 are held together! by means of a plurality of rivets 19.
The shaft 12 is adapted to pass through the aperture 15 and rest within the pocket 18 as is clearly shown in Fig. 1. Intermediate the end portions of this shaft 12 is carried the fan 13 which fan is formed from a single piece of sheet metal so as to have a circular periphery. The fan is out along a plurality of radially extending lines so as to form the blades 20. These blades 20, it will be seen, are twisted out of alinement with the hub portion 21 of the fan. This fan is held upon the shaft 12 by any suitable means such as solder, etc.
From the above description, it will be seen that a ventilator has been produced which is provided upon its outer end with means for preventing the entrance of vermin and upon its inner end with means for closing and opening the ventilator as desired. A ventilator has also been provided which has a fan rotatably carried therein so as to prevent the air from passing through the ventilator too quickly and means has been provided for efficiently holding this fan.
What is claimed as new is:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a drum, of a pain" of: sheet metal brackets positioned in said drum, each the brackets and having its ends hearing bracket comprising an inner and an outer against portions 01 the pockets formed on strip, the inner strip being apertured at its the outer strips, and a. fan mounted upon 10 center, the outer strip provided With a. said shaft.
pocket at its center positioned. over the aper- In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my ture of the inner strip, a shaft extending signature. through the apertures of the inner strips of J OH MERKEL.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five oentseach, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. 0.
