Fig. 7 is a sectional View similar to Fig. 6 but showing the form of screw and its combination with the spring and cover plate adapted to thin model watches.
In these drawing 1 indicates the dial plate of a watch with the dial removed. 2 indicates' the bridge which is attached to the rear side of the dial plate and in a recess in which is located the winding wheel 3. This winding wheel engages a winding gear 4, which is mounted on the winding stem 5, the winding stem bein rectangular in cross section and slidable t rough the winding gear. A sliding clutch 6 is mounted on the winding stem, which is turnable therewith, this clutch having. teeth 7 to engage the clutch teeth 8 of the winding gear 4 and also having a set-wheel 9, which is adapted to mesh with intersect wheel 10, in turn meshing with a minute wheel 10, suitably mounted on a stud 11 on the dial plate, this wheel transmitting its motion to the minute hand.
The set-wheel is shiftable with the clutch member and for this purpose a lever 13 has its endengaging a circumferential groove in the clutch, said lever being pivoted on the pin 14. This lever is controlled by one arm 15 of a leaf spring and a lever 16 also exerts control on lever 18, the said leaf spring having an arm 15 bearing on the lever 16. The lever 16 is mounted pivotally on pin 17 of the dial plate and it has an arm 18 engaging a groove in the head of the winding stem, shown at 19. The lever 16 also has an arm 20 adapted to work against the edge of the lever 13 and a second arm 20 adapted to work against the edge of the tail portion 13, of said lever 13. The parts above described, namely the levers 13, 16, and the spring arms 15, and 15 lie within a recess 22 formed in the dial plate on the dial side thereof and the winding and setting stem together with the winding gear and the clutch 6 with its set-wheel 9 lie within an opening in the bottom of the recess 22. Levers 13 and 16 are simply dropped onto their pivot pins and by placing a cover member 24 in position on a shoulder between these extensions so that when the cover plate is placed in position it will actas a bridge over the minute wheel 10 because the extensions 25 and 27 closely overhe the said minute wheel on the dial side face thereof, the opening 26 receiving the small gear arranged coaxial-1y with the minute wheel. The cover plate is held in position by two screws 28 and 29, the said screw 28 having a head overlying the upper or dial side face of the cover plate, said screw also serving as a means for holding the spring composed of the arms 15 and 15,
these arms being connected integrally by an eye portion 30 of the spring member,
which underlies the head of the screw 28.
all in one piece, being thus the two spring arms are connected byfthe eye portion they act as independent springs and two tensions are possible, one for the clutch lever and the other for the stem-lever to meet the different requirements forproper working. The tension of one spring arm-is not communicated to and does not distirrb the tension of the other spring.- The difilculty heretofore experienced by not securing the correct tension on each lever' separately is overcome. The spring while having independently tensioned and acting arnsis-is made dvantageeus to manufacturing.
When the stem 5 is pulled outwardly the lever 16 "is turned by "its arm 2E8 engaging therewith and the arm 20 working against the edge of lever 13 will shift the clutch 6 out of engagement with the winding gear 1 and the set-wheel 9 will be set into engage ment with the intersect wheel 10' to nr'ove the setting train when the stem 5 is ts ned. Now when the stem is pushed inwardly the lever 16 is moved to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, thus reinoj-wing'the arm '20 from the cam-shaped edge eff-the clutch lever 13*and' al lowing the spring arm- 1 5-110 swing the clutch lever to the dotted lineposition, thus removing the crown wheel 9 from engagement with the intersect wheel and throwing the clutch Ginto engagement with the winding gear. To-insure thi's action taking place we'provide means addition to the spring and of a positively operating nature, this consisting of the tail portion '13 of the clutch lever 13 and the additionaljarm 20' on the lever 16, which, when said lever isswung to the left Fig; I to removethe -arm 20' from engagement with the main part of the clutch lever, will ride "againstthe edge of the portion 1 3 and positively eperate {the clutch lever, thus avoiding the possibility of the crown wheels'ticking in the intersect or other wheel with which itenga'ges. This insures a positive 'releaseof'the setting mechanism after setting has been done and.

The spring arms will maintain the levers in the position to which they are operated. The cover member holds the levers on their pins and also retains the spring arms in proper relation to the levers. By remov' the cover plater24,and this "can be done 'frorn'the dial side of the'w'a'tch access may be had to the parts for repair or removal and this applies to the parts along the stem which are located in the opening at the bottom of the recess 22.. p
The cover plate 2% has a notch 24 in its edge to receive the shoulder of the holding screw. Suitable peek openings are provided in the bridge plate to obse rve' tl1e.operation of various parts. 1
For thin model watches we use the means shown Fig. 7 for holding the spring 15 in place, this consisting of a screw 28 having a conical head, "the inclined face of which on one side overlies the edge of the plate 24:,
edge being beveled to correspond to the inclined face of the screw head and in this construction the upper "face of the screw head is flush with the top surface of the plate 24:, this beingdiflerent from Fig. '6 in which the shouldered screw overlies the said plate 24 and partly above said plate. The
construction of Fig; 7 is adapted to thin model watches and the construction of Fig. 6 isadap t'ed for a lowenpriced watch of the thicker model. The inclined face of the screw head 28 bears upon thespring at the eye thereof and assists in holding it in place.
What we claim is: p
1. in combination in a watch, a winding lever, a clutch lever, a dial plate having a re- *cess, which saidlevers' are pivoted, said recess having a lateral extension, a one piece sprin having two arms having an eye fitted in the lateral extension of the recess and with its anns'beari ng upon the two 1evers, a cover plate, and a screw for holding cover plate place, said screw passing through th -eye of the spring and bearing on the i i'i ner side of said eye to hold it against the wall of the lateral recess, said "lateral recess a contracted mouth communicating with the main recess, said spring arm being bent sharply at the point where they emerge from the lateral. recess, snbstantiallyes described.

3.--,1n combination a dial plate having a recess on its dial side, a winding lever and a clutch lever pivotally mounted in said recess, a spring having an eye portion and arms to engage the said levers, said recess having a lateral extension receiving the eye of the spring, a cover plate for the recess and a screw overlying a portion of the said plate and having a portion bearing on the eye of the spring, said screw havin a beveled head and the cover plate having its edge beveled to correspond with that of the side of the screw head, the upper face of the screw head being flush with the cover plate and dial plate, and its inclined side bearing on the spring and holding it against the wall of the recess extension, substantially as described.
4. In combination in a watch, a stem, a grooved head thereon, a winding lever pivotally mounted and having an arm engaging said grooved head to be operated in both di-- reotions positively, a winding clutch and crown wheel, slidable on the stem, a clutchlever pivotally supported, and having a tail on the opposite side of its pivot from its clutch engaging arm, the said winding lever having two arms, one of which is on one side of the pivot of the clutch lever, to engage the edge of the tail thereof and the other on the opposite side of the said pivot to engage the edge of the clutch engaging arms, both arms of the winding lever and the clutch engaging arm and tail of the clutch lever being non resilient, substantially as described.
5. In combination in a watch, a stem, a grooved head thereon, a winding lever pivotally mounted and having an arm engaging said grooved head to be operated in both directions positively, a winding clutch and crown Wheel, slidable on the stem, a clutch lever pivotally supported, and having a tail on the opposite side of its pivot from its clutch engaging arm, the said winding lever having two arms, one of which is on one side of the pivot of the clutch lever, to engage the edge of the tail thereof and the other on the opposite side of the said pivot to engage the edge of the clutch engaging arms, both arms of the winding lever and the clutch engaging arm and tail of the clutch lever being non-resilient, and a spring having two arms, one of which engages the winding lever and the other of which engages the clutch lever.
