STEM WINDING AND SETTING MECHANISM FOR WATCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Application filed .Tune 14, 1911. Serial No. 633,097.
' the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stein-winding and setting mechanism for watches, and has for an object to provide mechanism of this character which will include actuating means for the rocking yoke, whereby the lat ter can be readily moved so that its gear wheels can be brought into intermeshing engagement with the barrel arbor wheel and the cannon pinion idler respectively.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the rocking yoke can be effectively moved or adjusted without relying upon the provision of springs or the like.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a watch mechanism showing only those elements thereof which are essential to a thorough understanding of the invention, the setting wheel of the yoke being shown in engagement with the setting wheel of the watch. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the winding wheel thereof engaged with the barrel arbor wheel. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the rock members of the winding and setting mechanism. Fig. 4: is a section on line 4Llof Fig. 1.
On referring to the drawing, the plate 1 of the watch shown therein has mounted thereon, at 2, a rocking yoke 3 which supports the train of gear wheels a, 5 and 6, the wheels 5 and 6 being preferably of the same size, and considerably smaller than the central wheel 4, the stem 7 is of usual construction, being provided with a crown 8 and a bevel-pinion 9, the latter being in mesh with the central wheel 4 on the rocking yoke. The winding and setting mechanism comprises a rock member 10 which is pivoted, at 11, to the plate 1. At one end the member 10 is provided with an inwardly extending finger or nose 12 which is adapted to be engaged against one of the curved surfaces 13 of the rocking yoke 3 so as to move the yoke to the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing when the member 10 is moved to one of its positions. This finger 12 bears against the upper edge of the yoke 3 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The opposite end of the member 10 extends outwardly and preferably through the watchcase, being formed to provide a manipulating lip lt. This end of the member 10 is provided with a substantially cam surface 15 which is movable in the direction of the rocking member 16 of the winding and setting mechanism.
The member 16 is pivoted, at 17, to the plate 1, the said member being provided with an arm 18, the outer extremity of which being positioned against the rocking yoke 3 on the underside thereof and at a point adjacent to the set-ting wheel 19 of the watch and disposed at one side of the axis of the pivot stud 2. An arm 20is also formed on the rocking member 16 and is adapted to lie directly in the path of move ment of the surface 15 of the member 10 to be engaged thereby when the latter is moved inwardly.
From the construction described it will be seen that when the member 10 is actuated so as to disengage the finger 12 thereof from the upper edge of the rocking yoke 3, the surface 15 of said member will be engaged against the inner surface 21 of the arm 20 of the rocking member 16 so as to cause the arm 18 thereof to bear beneath the said rocking yoke 3 and to hold the yoke in a position to cause the gear wheel 5 thereon to mesh with the barrel arbor wheel or main winding wheel 21 of the watch. When the portion 14: of the member 10 is drawn outwardly the yoke 8 will be rocked through the medium of the arm 12 bearing against the upper side of the yoke, disengaging the gear wheel 5 from the said barrel arbor wheel and causing the wheel 6 of the yoke to effectively intermesh with the setting wheel 19. In this position of the rocking yoke 3 it remains evident that when the winding stem 7 is revolved power will be applied thereto and then transmitted therethrough to the setting wheel 19 and the cannon pinion 22.
The plate 1 is provided with a stop 23 which is disposed in the path of the arm 20 so as to engage the same and thereby limit the movement of the rocking member 16 in one direction.
I claim:
In a stem-winding and setting mechanism for watches, rocking yoke, a train of intermeshing gear Wheels thereon, one of the Wheels being geared to the Winding stem, a rocking member having an actuating inner portion and an actuating outer portion, asecond rocking member positioned below the first mentioned member and formed to provide oppositely disposed upwardly extending arms, the said inner actuating portion being adapted to engage the said yoke at one side thereof to rock the same downwardly on movement of the member in one direction, one oi said upwardly extending arms being adapted to engage the opposite side of the said yoke to rock the same upwardly on movement of the said member in an opposite direction, the other arm of the said second member lying in a path of said outer actuating portion of the first mentioned memher and adapted to be engaged thereby on movement of the member in one direction substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence 01' two Witnesses.
