APPLICATION FILED FEB. 23, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK G. GRUEN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
STEM WINDING AND SETTING DEVICE FOR WATCHES.
Application filed February 23, 1911.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. GRUEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stem Winding and Setting Devices for Watches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is more especially to provide the stem setting and winding devices of a watch with a single spring adapted to press the operating devices to hold them either in setting or winding position.
The invention is embodied in the construction herein shown and described, the features of novelty being pointed out in the appended claim.
I11 the accompanying drawing forming part hereof Figure 1 is a plan view showing the parts assembled not in the normal or winding posit-ion but in the setting position. Fig. 2 is a detail showing the wind arbor and yoke lever.
In the views 5 designates the lower plate, so called.
6 designates the wind arbor which is perforated axially with a square hole. The arbor 6 is journaled at its outer end in the rim of the lower plate 5, while its inner end is journaled at a reduced portion as seen at 6 in a suitable bearing on the plate not shown. The arbor 6 is also provided with an annular shoulder 6". The arbor 6 within the shoulder 6 is round in cross section where it receives to turn on it the main stem wind wheel 8 the latter having its inner face provided with clutch teeth. The wind wheel 8 is held in proper position on the arbor 6 by the edges of a recess 9 formed in the plate. On the inner square portion 6 of arbor 6 is a combined clutch member and crown gear 1011, the clutch portion being designated by the character 10 and the gear portion by the character 11. The said combined clutch member and crown gear 1011 is slidable on but rotates with the arbor. Said combined clutch member and crown gear is also provided with an annular groove 12 into which extends the free arm of a set- Specification of Letters Patent.

ting lever 13 fulcrumed at 13*. When the setting lever is pressed in in an inward direction it causes the crown gear 11 to engage the setting wheel 14 and when swung in an outward direction it causes the clutch member 10 to engage the clutch teeth of the main stem wind wheel 8.
Fulcrumed at 15 is a yoke lever having arms 16, 17, and 18. The arms 16 and 17 have pins 16 and 17 respectively that extend through arc- shaped slots 19 and 20 respectively in the plate 5; and the arm 18 confronts the inner end of the axis of the arbor 6. In the square axial hole of the arbor 6 fits a sliding pin 21 having a head 21 that bears upon said arm 18. a
Fixed at one end in the rim of the plate 5 at 22 is a spring 23 having its free end bent or crooked to form a short spring arm 23. The main shank or long portion of the spring 23 is to press upon the pin 16 and the short arm 23 acts upon the inner side of the setting lever 13 which in turn acts on the pin 17 side is provided with a projection 13 shaped to maintain contact with the pin 17 in the oscillations of the former and prevent it from yielding when the, parts are moved to setting position.
When the square stem 24 of the usual winding crown wheel (which has means for holding it in or out) is forced in, the setting lever is thrown to the position where the short arm 23 of the spring presses upon said lever and also throws the pin 17" up on the project-ions 13 thereby holding the setting devices disengaged from the winding wheel and engaged with the intermediate wheel; and when the square stem 24 is pulled out the pressure of the short arm is released or reduced, and the long arm of the spring, acting on the pin 16, holds clutch member of the combined clutch member and crown gear 10-11 yieldingly and clickingly engaged with the wind wheel 8.
What I claim is:
In a stem winding and setting watch, the combination with the plate 5, a combined clutch member and crown gear, and a crown wind, of a lever 13 engaging the said clutch The setting lever 13 at its outermember and gear and having a projectiOn engage the said arm 17, substantially as 13 a yoke lever having three arms 16, 17 described.
and 18, said arm 18 being engaged by the FREDERICK GRUEN crown Wind, a spring consisting of a long arm 23 and a short arm 23 interposed be- Witnesses:
tween the arm 16 and the aforesaid lever 13, D. GRUEN,
the projection 13 of said lever 13 located to HAROLD R. HAERR.
