Be it known that I, WILLIAM M; MAcKAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at 78 vWarrington Place, East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have in- Vented certain new and useful Improvements in SectionalJ Steam or Water Boilers with i/Vater-Grates, fully described and represented in the following specification and accompanying drawings, forming a part of i the same.

The `fire-box Sections shown inyFigs. 6 and 7 are formed of a fiat water-plate having horizontal arm a' and Vertical arm 0,2. The Sections are assembled upon a base A3, with a water-front B4 which fits beneath the front ends of the fire-box sections to support them. The water-space in the arms a and az is continuous within the channels d so as to permit a free circulation of the water within both arms, and from the Vertical arms to the horizo-ntal arms.` The tops of all the sections are connected separately with the header C, and the lower ends separately with the header D, through which water is suppli'ed` indirectly to the sections.
The said hollow channels and joint-seat form, when the sections are adjoining and thusconnected, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, flue-passages e extending between all parts of both arms and' opening at 8' upon the inner side of the Vertical arms at the lower end of the same. t
This construction of the arms enables each to form a single independent direct water passage from the water-inlet D to the steam or water-Outlet C; while the oint-seats upon the edges of the ;arm form at opposite sides of the same a single fiue-passage e which leads from the fiue-openinge' to the transverse passage later deseri'laed,

The outer side of the Vertical arm is of convex contour or profile, so that the seats at the outer edge of the arm incline toward the inner edge of the arm at its lower end, where it is formed with a fiat surface or foot 62 to rest upon the base. When the Sections 'are assembled, these seats cl' and d2 contact With one another, as shown in Figs. 7 and 9. The water-channels project from the surfaces of the plates sufiiciently to form smooth passages c between the Sections.
A transverse fiue-opening c is extended through the plate of the horizontal arm near its front end, such openings coinciding in the several fire-box Sections.
The ends of' the horizontal arms are covered, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 6, by a frontplate m' having doors n' for cleaning out the spaces e. Each end-section, as shown in Fig. 7 is formed with anlopening c' coincident with the transverse passages c. One of its openings may be provided with a smoke-nozzle g', and the other with a draftdoor 02, as shown in Fig. 1.

The front B4 is shown as a hollow water'- plate with upper door B' and lower door B2. and hollow grate-bars f are shown screwed into the water-plate ibetween the upper and lower doors, and extended to the Vertical arms b which are provided just above the fine-opening c' with a ledge g to support the ends of the bars.
The grate formed of the hollow bars f divdes the fire-lbox into upper and lower firechambers, 'the upper chamber having no outlet to the chimney, so that the draft is compelled to move downward through such` lfig. 11 shows a. guard m having notches upon its under side adapted to embrace the pins g' as they rest upon the ledge g, and thus hold the grate-bars in alinement.
An inclined partition h is extended from side to side of the water-front between the doors, reaching across the front ends of all the grate-bars.
Return or circulating-tufloes z' open at both ends are screwed into such partition, one of them projecting into each ofthe grate-bars and' extendi'ng nearly to its inner end. The partition thus dvides the interior of the front into two water-spaces, which form common communications respectively with the grate-bars and the tu'bes i.
A removable plug f' is fitted in the front before each of the tubes z' to permit of the introduction of 'the tubes, and the tubes, as
shown in Figs. 3 and 11, are made with keylike ribs fz within their threaded ends to engage a suta'ble wrench for screwng them into and out of the partition when the block is removed.
Supply-pipes j connect the lower water space of the water-front with the lower part of the end section, and pipes `7G' connect the upper water-space with the upper part of the end section, and the inclined partition h in such front compels all the water which enters the lower space to pass through the tubes and the hollow grates f to reach the upper space from which it' passes to the end Sections.
The connection of all the Sections by a header C at the top and a header D 'at the bottorml affords av separate circulation of` A3 and ash-door A2, as shown in Figs. 1,`
2 and (i, a supplemental grate Z may be fitted to the top of the base, thus providing for the consumpti'on of fuel in the lower firechamber. f

maintained thereon to arrest any fuel that falls from the upper' grate, and complete its combustion.
The fire on the lower' grate` aids very much in effecting the oombustion of the coal upon thel upper igrate, as 'the smoke and gases which descend through the upper grate arc maintained at a high, temperature in the lower cham'ber of the fire-box and their ccmbustion is promoted before they enter the flues 'between the Sections.
Such doulble comlbustion upon the tw o grates consu-mes the heavy smoke which 1s emitted from the chimneys 'of soft coal furnaces, with boilers' |of ordinary coinbustion having a single grate only.
The bars of the lower grate Z'would be set close together to prevent any loss of fuel, while the grate formedof the waterbars f are set farther apart, as shown in Fig. 10, (which represents the inner side of the water-front) 'to permit the combustion of soft coal with a downward draft.
To permit the -slicing of the soft coal upon such a grate, lstoke-holes n are forced through the water-front, as shown in Fig. 8, for access to the spaces between all of the ars.
H'aving thus set forth the nature of the invention what is claimed herein is:
1. A Vertical firebox section for a steam or water-boiler, comprising a water-plate of L-shape having a horizontal arm with substantially horizontal edges, and 'a Vertical arm with its lower edges gradually sloped towardV one another to its bottom end, the arms having enlarged hollow channels along the margin with opposite sloping walls forming joint-seats which extend along the i outer margins of both arms and along the inner margin of the horizontal arm and part way down the inner margin of thevertical arm, the said enlarged hollow Channels and joint-seats forming, when the Sections are assembled, a flue extending between all parts of the arms and forming a smoke-Outlet upon the inner side of the Vertical arms at the lower end of the same.

A Vertical firebox section for a steam or water-boiler, comprising a water-plate of L-shape having a horizontal arm and a Vertical arm and joint-seats upon opposite sides along the outer edges of both arms, and joint-seats upon opposite sides along the inner edge of the horizontal arm and part way down the inner side of the Vertical arm, the seats forming, when the sections are assembled, flue-spaces extending between all parts of both arms, and the horizontal arm having a transverse fiue-opening` through the water-plate to permit the lateral passage of the smoke from said fiue.
3. A Vertical firebox section for a steam or water-boiler comprising a water-plate of L- Shape having a horizontal arm with substantially horizontal edges, and a Vertical arm with its lower edges sloped in relation to one another to the bottom end of said arm, the arms having enlarged hollow Channels along the outer margins of both arms and along the inner margin of the horizontal arm and part way down 'the inner margin of the Vertical arm, the Channels having opposite sloping walls forming joint-seats upon opposi'te sides of the sections, the said joint-seats forming, when the sections are assembled, a
flue extending between all parts of the arms and forming a smoke-inlet upon the inner side of the Vertical arm at the lower end of the same, and the Sections having a trans- Verse ledge upon the inner side of the Vertical arm at the top of the smoke-inlet to support a grate above the sm0ke-inlet and thus divide the 'space within the section into' two combustion-chambers, the upper of which operates only with a downward draft.
4. A Vertical firebox section for a steam or water-boiler, comprising a water-plate of L-shape having a horizontal arm with substantially horizontal edges and a Vertical arm with edges gradually sloped toward one another, the arms having enlarged hollow channels along` the margin with opposite sloping walls forming joint-seats which extend along the outer n'iargins of both arms and along the inner margin of the horizontal arm, the said water-Channels and joint-seats forming fiues when the sections are lioined together and a smoke-inlet ufpon the inner side of the Vertical arm near its foot, and the horizontal arm having a transverse flneopening' between the water-Channels near its forward end, the sloping of the waterchannels in the Vertical arm in relation to one another forming` a gradually expanding smoke-fiue between the Channels in the Vertical. arm, to retard the movement of the escaping gases toward the transverse fiueopening.
5. A steam or water-boiler having a plurality of firebox Sections, comprising each a water-plate of L-shape having` a horizontal arm and a Vertical arm with joint-seats upon the opposite sides along the outer edges of both arms, and joint-seats upon the opposite sides along the inner Aedges of the horizontal arms and part way down the inner .sides of the Vertical arms, such seats forming a fiue-space extending between all parts of adjoining sections and a smoke outlet upon the inner side of the Vertical arm at the lower end of the same, lend-sections of the same Outline as the L-shaped section for closing the ends of the firebox, a base receiving the lower ends of the Vertical arms, a water-front fitted between the horizontal arms and the base, and a grate fitted within the Sections between their Vertical arms and the water-front, and dividing the Space within the Sections into two conibustion-chambers, the Chamber below the gra-te having the only communication with the smoke-Outlet and the upper cham'ber operating with downward draft only.
6. A steam or water-boiler having a plurality of firebox Sections with marginal joint-seats forming fiue-spaces between all parts of the adjoining *sections, a smokeoutlet upon the .inner side of the Vertical arms at the lower end of the same, a elfre on each Vertical arm. over the amokeeutlt,
end-Sections of the same outline as the L- shaped Sections, a base receiVing,` the lower end of the Vertical arms, a water-front fitted between the horizontal arms and the base, an oblique partition within the water-front dividing` the water-space into upper and lower water-cham'bers, hollow grate-bars projected from the upper water-chamber to the ledges over the smoke-Outlet, crculating-tubes secured in the oblique partition in communication with the lower water-chamber and extending into the said grate-bars and circulating` pipes connecting the endsections with the upper and lower waterchambers in the water-front, as and for the purpose set forth.
7. A steam or hot water boiler having` end-Sections as described and a plurality of intermediate L-shaped fireboX-sections With horizontal arms at the top of the firebox and Vertical arms at its rear end, a base supporting the ends of the Vertical arms, a water-front closing the front of the firebox, an oblique partition extended across the water-front dividing the front into upper and lower water-chambers, hollow gratebars projected from the upper water-chamber across the firebox to the Vertical arms, return-tubes secured in the partition in communication with the lower water-chamber and extending one into each of the gratebars, and the chambers above and below the oblique partition forming common communications respectiVely with the grate-bars and with the return-tubes, a water supply pipe extended into the lower water-chamber, and a'water-outlet pipe extended from the upper chamber, the construction causing all the Water entering the water-front to circulate through the `grate-bars.
8. A steam or hot waterbo-iler having a plurality of L-shaped fireboX-sections with marginal joint-seats forming fiue-spaces between all parts of the adjoining Sections with a smoke-Outlet near the bottomof each sectionfand a ledge at-the top of such Outlet, a base supporting the fireboX-sections, endsections and a water-front closing the firebox, an obliquepartition extending wholly across the upper water-front and diViding the water-front into upper and lower watercham'bers, a series of threaded holes extended into the upperwater-chamber, water grate-bars screwed each into one of the threaded holes andextended to the ledges upon the Vertical arms, and return-tubes screwed into the oblique partition and extending into the grate-bars, as and for the purpose set forth.
