SAFETY HEAD-COVERING FOR THE PROTECTION OF WORKIVIENS SKULLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Application led November 11, 1918. Serial No. 262,089.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT A. FALCONER, and I, FRANK MENDIZZA, both citizens of the United States, and residing at Shooter Island, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Safety Head-Covering for the Protection of Workniens Skulls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to head coverings, and it relates more specifically to an improved cushioned hat or cap crown f or protecting the wearers head against injury by falling bodies.
The main object of this invention is to provide a head protector which is light and well ventilated while affording the maximuni protection against falling or descending bodies.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to persons. who read the following, in connection with the accompanyin g drawing, in which the invention is illustrated by the single figure.
Referring to this drawing by reference characters, the device comprises a hat or cap having a crown 1 which overhangs the lower part Q to which the sweat band 3 is secured, and a disk or block 4 o-f cork is supported in the crown by the overhanging part o-f the latter, and this block supports the top part of the crown.
The lower surface of the block is preferably concaved so as to conform somewhat to the top of the wearers head. This block, as illustrated, is approximately one-fifth as Copies of this patent may be obtained for thick as its length, but these proportions may vary somewhat, the essential feature being that it is thick enough to form a substantial cushion that overhangs the head and features of the wearer so as to protect them against injury by a tool or piece of material that may drop thereon from a distance above a workman or other person.
In order that the 4cushion or block i may be lightened and rendered more resilient or yielding, i is provided with a plurality of perforations 5. These perforations also permit better ventilation than if they were absent, and any appropriate number of such perforations may be provided.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. A head protector comprising a hat or cap having a lower part to it around the head of a person and a crown beyond said lower part, said crown extending outward beyond the said lower part, and a block fitted in said crown and extending outward beyond said lower part a considerable distance, whereby the head and features of the person are protected from falling bodies.
2. In a head protector, a disk of a thickness substantially one-fifth as thick as its length and having one side concaved, said disk being adapted to it in the crown of a hat or cap and t0 extend outward beyond the part below the crown, said disk having` perforations therein for the purposes specified.
