general character having novel and improved means whereby the excrement or fecal matter and urine will be effectively separated. I
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character [including a yieldably supported member adapted to contact with the buttocks at a point in advancepf the anus to effect the requisite separation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel improved device of this 25 general character including a yieldably supported member forthe separation of urine from the other matter, together with means coactingwithsaid member to hold the same in a position to facilitate its use in conjunction with a male. 7 v
- Theinvention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar- 7 rangement of the several parts of my im-, proved dry closet whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device-reng deredsi npler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as
- will be hereinafter mo-refully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed; 7
In order that my invention may be the panying drawings, wherein Figuregl ls a view in perspect ve illustrating a dryeloset constructed in accordance ,open position.-

' urine in a second position, and
Fig, 5 is avi ewin top plan of the means for yieldingly supporting the urine separator and constantly urging the same in one direction.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawlngs, C denotes a chest of' predetermined configuration and dimensions and which is provided at a side with a door D so that de-,
sired access may be had within'the chest.
and is provided with the conventional opening rear portion of the top- T is provided with vent opening 2 fromwhich leads a flue 3 for oarrying'off the vitiated air.
,Hin edly n cte o h p T a wardly f the opening 1 is a lid or coverL ,adapted, when lowered, to close the opening 1. The lid L, when-raised and partially moved beyond the vertical, contacts with the upstanding blocks or abutments carried s. by the top at opposite sides of the'flue 3 so that the 11d or cover L may be employeding the flue 3.. V
'Insertible within the chest C is the recepas a lazy-back and is-prevented from strik 'taole or bucket R which is adapted to be poslt oned 1n the rear portion of the chest G and tounderlie the rear portion of the V ropeningf l in a manner to receivethe excrementor fecal matter. The receptacle or bucket R also-underlies the vent opening- 2 so thatesoape of the vitiated air is assurcd through the flue 3. The forward portion of the receptacle or bucket R- has its wall prov ded with an inwardly disposed depression 5- purpose which will be hereinafter more particularly. referredto.
M denotes a separating-member for urine, andsa d member is substantially funnel- 7 shaped with its forward edge a substantially -eeiawn z h nged jwnee eda a 6 w The top T of the chest constitutes a seat the forward part of the'top T. The upper or flared end portion 7 is rearwardly disposed and of a size to terminate at a point between the anus and the exterior orifice of the vagina or the penis in accordancewith the sex of the occupant of the closet so that the requisite separation of the urine is assured. I
The lower end portion or spout 8 of the member M discharges Within the enlarged upper portion 9 of the carry-off pipe P suit ably secured to the forward or front wall of the chest C. V
In the-present embodiment of my, invention, the lower portion or spout 8 of the member M is loosely disposed through an annular member or ring 10 and engaged with said member or ring 10 at opposite sides of the lower portion or spout 8' are the lower extremities of the retractile members or springs 11. The opposite extremities f the members or springs 11 are suitably anchored to the under face of the top T or other part of the chest so that themembers or springs 11 serve to constantly urge the member M upwardly and yet permit the same to have yielding downward movement.
By having the members or springs 11 c0- acting with the member M as just described,
it is assured that the upper edge of the M at its rear portion will have direct contact with the buttocks of the occupant of the closet and'particularly of a female, and the yielding movement of the member M compensates for any desired adjustment of the member M.-
When the occupant of the closet is a male,
-it is of advantage that the rear portion of the flared upper end of themember M be maintained lowered'sothat the same will be free of contact with the occupant.
In the present embodiment of my invention, the member M is maintained in the desired lowered positionvthrough the medium of the arm or slide 12 pivotally engaged with the member M and preferably the lower portion of spout Sther'eof andloosely disposed through an opening 145' in the for i ward or front wall of the chest C. The
upper edge of the arm or slide 9 in close proxlmlty to its pivoted connection 15 with V the member M is provided with a notch 16 adapted to bridge the upper edge of the 7 opening 14 and thereby maintainthe member'M in the desired lowered position. The
arm or slide 12 at all times extends eXte riorly of the chest C so that the lowering" of; the member M may be accomplished by a direct pull on the slide or arm 12. p
The depression 5 in the forward wall'of the receptacle or bucket R hereinbefore referred to assures the proper positioning of .said receptacle or bucket without interference or hindrance to the desired movements of the members M as the flared portion 7 of the member M extends within said depression 5, Figs. 3 and 4:, and wherein said depression is shown'to be of a depth to permit the swinging movements of the member M.
F denotes a foot-rest positioned adjacent the lower portion of the chest C at the front thereof and for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
In practice, it is preferred that a sanitation powder consisting either of salted sifted ashes or salted pulverized clay containing a small per cent of either potash, nitrate of soda, or crude saltpeter be used in connection with my improved device, and which powder is placed within the receptacle or bucket R. Initially, about one gallon of this powder is placed within the receptacle or bucket R and substantially one pint added each day. 7
From the foregoing description, 1t is as is clearly illustrated in thought to be obvious that a dry closetconfication without departing from the principles andspirit thereof and forthijs reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangementjand forand it will also be obvious that 'my inven- M tion is susceptible of some change and modimation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed. 'Iclaim: V
' '1. A device of the character described comprising a chest having an opening in its" 'top and a funnel-shaped member supported for swinging movement within the chest and partiallylunderlying the opening, andyielding means for constantly swinging the member toward the top of the chest. 2.
