lie it hnown that I, Les H. PARKER, a citizen oi the United States, and a resident oi' Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in Spray-Nozzles, of which ilu: following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to spray nozzles of general application, but more particularly intended for distributing liquids or liquids containing more or less solid matter.
lllliile my invention is not restricted to auch use, an important object thereof is to provide a nozzle for cooling water in or in connection with cooling ponds, or for condenscrs, ice plants, mills or any industry requiring a supply of cooling water or liquid.
By the nozzle herein disclosed I form and distribute over preferably an extended area a spray composed of or comprising water or other liquid or suitable fluid, and in aeeinfdance with the disclosed and preferred embmlinient of my invention I discharge the liquid in a spray that is of substantially uniform homogeneity throughout. Such a spray may be used in any of the defined relui-.zn'is or for any other suitable purpose, as, for example, for spraying efliuent, for precipitating; or 'or spraying coal dust 'or other toi-eign nmtter. for air washing, for condensingvapors, for humidifying air and for other purposes.
In carrying out my invention, I project the fluid in a flaring spray. and within the nozzle I preferably simultaneously produce an inner jet which in this embodiment of my invention is a substantially central or axial jet and one or more surrounding jets which are preferably and for best results mixed within the mixing chamber of the nozzle. so that there is an effective mixture or blending of the jets `before they issue in --pi`z=y torni from the mixing chamber, which latter is preferably So shaped as or is provided with means to Cause impact and mixingl oi' the several jets within the confined :space of the mixing chamber of the nozzle.

Referring more particularly to the drawing the nozzle herein shown comprises a shell or casing 1, the lower end of which is adapted to be attached to a hose or pipe for conveying the water or other liquid. To that end, I have herein represented said shell or casing 1 as threaded at its lower end Preferably also the upper end of the shell or casing 1 is threaded as represented at 8 for the reception of the head or cap 4 of the nozzle which is inleriorly threaded. My in vention is, however, not limited to a nozzle wherein the parts 1 and 4: are separate or detachable, since they might be formed in a single niece. Preferably for convenience in manu acture the members 1 and l are detachable.
The head or cap 4 is provided with a suit` able. discharge orifice 5 herein represented as circular. The interior of the head or cap L1 constitutes a mixing chamber, and it is preferably tapering or more or less dome shaped, so that the streams of liquid are caused to mix and intermingle prior to their discharge through the outlet 5.
In the patent to Eneas, No. 1,101,261, dated June 23, 1.91%, there is disclosed a spray nozzle having a central axially arranged sleeve or tube through which the central or axial jet passes, surrounding spiral vanes being provided to convey a plurality of streams of liquid in spiral directions,` all the streams being caused to meet and interniingle within the mixing chamber.

In the said mixing chamber the inner and herein central jet meets the surrounding jet or jets and thus the liquid or fluid of the jets is mixed and blended Within a confined chamber or space. The mixed mass issues from the chamber in a spray which is of substantially uniform homogeneity throughout.
While the several jets or streams are mixed Within the mixing chamber 8', substantially as set forth in the said patent to Eneas, No. 1,101,264, I have found in practice that the described provision of means for effecting the formation of an inner and herein a central jet and one or more surrounding jets peculiarly cooperates with the mixing chamber and particularly in that the liquid from all the jets enters with a minimum of obstruction into the mixing c-hamher and in streams of such unimpeded force as to result in an even more effective mixing than heretofore. Moreover, I find that in some cases there is or may be a preliminary mixing at the very base of the mix.- ing chamber, that is, at the point Where the several streams enter thereinto. This is owing to the fact that no physical wall is present, so as accurately or exactly to define the shape or radial extent of the inner and herein central jet or stream.
lVithin the scope and purpose of my invention, the mixing chamber need not be employed, although it preferably and for best results is employed, since so far as I am aware I am the first to effect the formation of an inner and herein a central jet and one or more surrounding jets in substantially the manner herein described.
As hereinbefore stated, the surrounding or outer jet or jets may be of any suitable character. While therefore I preferably use a spiral vane or vanes therefor, it is clear that the vane or vanes need not be of a spiral character so long as it or they are substantially a surrounding` or outer vane or vanes, so as to produce an outer or surrounding jet or jets.
Tithin the scope and -purpose of the invention, the so-calledcentral or axial jet need not be wholly axial or throughout the entire extent thereof and particularly at its lower end. The vane o-r vanes 6 may be so shaped that only throughout a portion of the length thereof does the water pass through axially, thus forming the central jet. The remainder of the length of the passage or space wherethrough passes the Water that ultimately forms the central or axial jet may he somewhat spiral or not truly axial, so that as to a portion at least of the course of the liquid that ultimately becomes the central or actual jet or stream, there may be somewhat of a whirling action. Throughout the upper portion, however, of the course of the liquid that beeomesthe cen- `jet of liquid incontact with of said inner edge or edges, the inner surtral jet, the liquid in the disclosed cmhodiment of the invention has a substantially truly axial or central location or relation with respect to the shell or casing l.
Thus, while for best results I prefer to have the central or axial jet truly centrall or axial throughout its entire extent and throughout substantially the entire length of the shell or casing 1, I may (referring to the disclosed embodiment of the invention) so construct the nozzle that the liquid docs not immediately, where it enters the nozzle, partake 0f such central stream character, provided it does so `before the mixing chamber is reached. In other words the liquid entering the nozzle might all come under the influence preliminarily of the vane or vanes, which are however so formed at their upper portions as to result in the formation of the said central jet or stream. This depends upon the shape and position of the inner edge of the vane or vanos. If a central plug or obstruction uhe provided at Athe hase of the vane or vanos, this is within the scope of my invention, since such plug or o-bstructifm, if present, is of rcstricted length, Iand the liquid immediately thereabove partailics of the said centralstream character. This form of my invention is represented in Figs. 5, (i and 7, wherein the central or axial obstruction is represented at 13, and the opening which is at one side thereof is represented at 14. It is here shown as of substantially the same diameter as in Fig. 2,
For the best results, and particularly where the nozzle is used in the spraying of sewage, or in the spraying of liquid containing more or less solid matter (to which use, however, my invention is in no wise limited), the central passage is of approximately one third of the diameter of the entire passage through the nozzle and is approximately the diameter of the outlet from the nozzle.
Having thus described one illustrative form of my invention, I desire it to he understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive senso and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention beingset forth in the following claims.
1. A spray nozzle comprising a shell or casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having one er more spirally arranged vanas between said inlet and outlet for directing the liquid in a spiral jet or jets, said vane or vanes having at least a portion of the inner edge thereof radially spaced from the axial center of the nozzle sutiieiently to leave an opening for-the passage of a central such portion face 'of the shell or casing in proximity to the outlet tapering inward to a markedly greater extent than the `preceding part of l ll the said surface, thereby to direct the spiral jet or jets in a marked change in direction into an intensified or increasing mixture with the particles of the central jet at a zone in proximity bo the outlet.

A spray nozzle comprising a shell or casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having one or more spirally arranged vaines between said inlet and outlet for directing the liquid in a spiral jet or jets, said vane or vanes having a portibn at least of the inner edge thereof' radially spaced from the axial center of the nozzle, thereby to leave an opening for the passage of a central jet of liquid in Contact with such portion of said inner edge or edges, and a mixing chamber in advance of said vane or vanes into which said central and said surrounding jet or jets are discharged and wherein they are thoroughly mixed before issuing from said outlet, the inner surface of the wall of said mixing chamber in proximity to the outlet tapering inwardly to a markedly greater extent than the preceding part of said surface, thereby to direct,` the spiral jet or jets in a marked change in direction into an increasing mixture with the paiticles of the central jet at a point in proximity to the said outlet.
4. A spray' nozzle comprising a shell or casino having ail inlet and an outlet and also having one or more' spirally arranged venes between* Seidl hletl and outlet for directing theliqiiid in a` spiral jet or jets, and a mixing chamber in advance of the said varies and between thel same and said outlethufvings the pbrtidirof thes inner surface 7 of the Wall thereof tapered inwardly in proximity to the outlet markedly in comparison with the preceding portion of said surface, said vane or vanes having the inner edges thereof nearest the mixing chamber suliciently radially removed from the axial center of the nozzle to leave an opening for the passage of a central jet of liquid in contact with the said inner edge of said nine or vanes, `vhereby a preliminary contact or partial intermixing of said central andsurrounding jet or jets may occur within the base of the mixing chamber followed by a complete intermixing of said jets Within said chamber in proximity to said outlet and before issuance from the said outlet.

A spray nozzle comprising a shell casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having one or more spirally arranged vanes between said inlet and outlet for directing the liquid in spiral jet or jets, said vane or Yanes having the inner edge thereof radially spaced from t-he axial center of the nozzle, thereby to leave an opening for the passage ot a central jet of liquid in contact with said inner edge or edges, said vane or vanes being of decreasing pitch in the direction of the flow of liquid, thereby gradually to change the direction of flow of the liquid and to reduce to a minimum the friction thereof in its passage through the nozzle.
10. A spray nozzle comprising a shell or casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having one or more spirally arranged vanes between said inlet and outlet for directing the liquid in a, spiral jet or jets, said vane or vanes having the inner edge thereof radially spaced from the axial center of the nozzle, thereby to leave `an opening for the passage of a central jet of liquid in contact with such portion of said inner edge or edges, and a mixing chamber in advance of said vane or vanes, the inner surface of said mixing chamber being so shaped and the vane or vaines being of decreasing pitch in the direction of flow of the liquid, Whereby in coperation with the inner surface of the mixing chamiber the surrounding jet or jets are gradually brought from a flow in the direction of the entering stream to a flow at approximately right angles Vthereto and crossing the outlet Where they encounter the central jet and are thoroughly mixed thereby Within the mixing chamber.
11. A spraying nozzle comprising a shell or casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having one or more spirally arranged vanes between said inlet and outlet for directing the liquid in` a spiral jet or jets, said vane or venes having the inner edge thereof radially spaced from the axial center of the nozzle, thereby toy leave an opening for the passage of a central jet of liquid inicontact With such portion of said inner edge or edges, and a mixing chamber in advance of said vane or venes, the inner surface of said mixing chamber being so shaped that the surrounding jet or jets are brought from a flow in the direction of the entering stream to a flow at yapproximately right angles thereto, and crossing the outlet where they encounter the central jet and are thoroughly mixed thereby Within the mixing chamber.
12. A spraying nozzle comprising a shell or casing having means to produce a central jet and one or more surrounding jets, and a mixing chamber in advance of the means for producing said jets, said mixing cha-mber having an outlet, and the inner surface of the Wall of said chamber in proximity to said outlet being markedly tapering in comparison With the preceding part of said Wall, and so shaped as to direct said surrounding jet or jets in a direction which approximates a right angle to the direction of the inflow of the stream through the nozzle, whereby an intensified mixing action is effected in proximity to the said outlet.
18. A spraying nozzle comprising a shell or casing having means to produce a reir tral jet and one or more surrounding jets, and a mixing chamber in advance of the means for producing said jets, said mixing chamber having an outlet, and the inner surface of the Wall of said chamber in proximity to said outlet being of a flattened dome shape and extending from a preceding substantially cylindrical portion of said mixing chamber whereby said surrounding jet or jets are guided by said inner surface of the Wall in a direction which approximates a right-angle to the direction of the inflow of thestreaxn through the nozzle, and into thorough intermixing relation with the central jet.
14. A spi-ajv nozzle comprising a shell or easing having an inlet and an outlet and also ha ring one or more spirally arranged Yanes between said inlet and outlet for direrting the liquid in al spiral jet or jets, the inner edges of said vane or vanes being shaped and positioned to permit and eii'ect the formation and passage of a substantially central or inner jet that is Without a physieal wall separating it from the outer spiral jet or pets, the diameter of said Central jet beingl at least substantially one-third the diameter oi said vane or Yanes and equal to the` full diameter of said outlet, thus permitting the ready use of the nozzle with a` liquid rontaining solid matter, said shell or easing having` a mixing chamber l'ietvveen the outlet and'said vane or Yanes.

A spray nozzle eomprising aV shell or easing having an inlet and an outlet. and also haring one or more inclined Yanes between said inlet and outlet for direeting the liquid in an inrlined outer jet or jets` the inner portion ot' said vane or Yanes being shaped and positioned to permit and etl'eet the formation and passage of an inner jet that is without a physical wall separating it from the said inclined jet or jets, the di :mieter of said inner jet being at least onethird the diameter of said vane or Yanes.

A sprayv nozzle comprising a shell or easing having an inlet and an outlet, and also having one or more inclined Yanes be- Coples o! this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the tween said inlet and outlet for directing the liquid in an inrlined, outer jet or jets, the inner portion of said vane or varies being shaped and positioned to permit and effect the formation and passage of an inner jet that is without a ph Ysieal wall separating it from the said inclined jet or jets, the diameter of said inner` jet being at least substantially one-third the diameter of said vane or 'ane/s and said shell or easing having a mixing chamber between the outlet and said vane or Yanes.

A spray nozzle comprising a shell or casing having an inlet and an outlet and also having one or more inclined Yanes betiveen said inlet and outlet for directing the liquid in an inclined, outer jet or jets, the .inner portion of said vane or Yanes being shaped and positioned to permit and eii'eet the formation and passage of an inner jet that is without a physieal wall separating it from the said inclined jet or jets, the diaiueter of the inner jet being at least ouethird the diameter of the entire passage through the nozzle and also approximately the diameter of the outlet from the nozzle.

A sprayv nozzle comprising a shell or easing having au inlet and an outlet and also having one or more inclined vanes between said inlet and outlet tor directing the liquid in an inclined jet or jets, the inner portion of said vane or Yanes being shaped and positioned to permit and eli'eet the. formation and passage of an inner jet that is without a physical Wall separating it from the said inclined jet or jets, the diameter of the inner jet beine at least substantially the tull diameter o? the outlet from the nozzle and at least one-third the diameter of the entire passage through the nozzle.
