RI-IESA FLAVIUS WILLIAMS, OF LAKE TOXAWAY, NORTH CAROLINA.
CONTAINER FOR MUCILAGE OR THE LIKE.
Application filed December 6, 1917.
T0 (/ZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Bursa F. humans, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Lake Toxaway, in the county of Transyl vania and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Container for Mucilage or the like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a container and dispenser for mucilage, paste, or the like, adapted to be made of a size for desk use or larger for use in applying paste to large sheets of paper. More particularly the invention relates to a container employing a drum or roller dipping into the mucilage or other adhesive material and turning at its top above the said material, whereby in the turning of the roller the mucilage will be carried thereon to the top, to be readily available.
Objects of the invention are to provide a container of the class referred to in which the roller will be caused to automatically close an opening through which it extends in the top of the container, whereby to close the container to exclude air to thus prevent drying out of the mueilage or other material.
A further object is to provide a hollow roller in communication with the interior of the receptacle to thus accommodate a portion of the mucilage or other material where by a maximum quantity of material will be accommodated with the minimum size of container.
A further object of the invention is to provide means to depress the roller out of contact wit-h the top when mucilage is to be taken from the roller so that in the turning of the latter it will not exert friction against the edges of the opening through which it extends.
.Morc specifically the invention has for an object to improve containers of the class referred to in various particulars with a view to promote convenience in use, as well as facility in supplying the mucilage or other material to the receptacle and the cleaning of the latter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Serial No. 205,751.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal .vertical sectionv of a container embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view with the cover removed;
F 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1, the cover being omitted;
Fig. lis a side elevation largely diagrammatic, the view being on a reduced scale.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example. a receptacle 10 is provided which advantageously is oblong and near one end a vertical partition 11 divides the partition into a main compartment 12 for mucilage or the like and a water compartment 13.
Mounted to turn in the container is a drum or hollow roller 14, the ends 15 of which are .open whereby the mucilage or the like may freely enter the same so that the drum will have the minimum displacement represented by its submerged mass and thus the maximum quantity of mucilage or the like will be accommodated in a receptaele of given size. The roller at the periphery is formed with longitudinal grooves 18 and intervening ribs. whereby to take up a sulliciency of the mucilage and incidentally to present a roughened surface whereby the roller may be readily turned by pressure of a finger on the paper or the like applied to the roller or to effect turning contact by a brush A as in Fig. 4. At the ends the roller has flanges 19 of greater radius than the grooved body of the drum to constitute guards. the material of the top extending toward the body of the roller at opposite sides thereof between said flanges. The roller is so mounted in the receptacle that it will extend above a top 17 provided on the receptacle, the projecting portion extending through an opening 16 in said top.
The roller is spring-pressed to cause the drum to bear against the opposite edges of the opening 16 and thereby close said opening to prevent entrance of air. In the preferred construction the drum is mounted to turn on an axle or shaft 20, the ends 21 of which are squared to receive the pressure of the upper ends of springs 22 which are seated at their lower ends on lateral. ledges 23 formed on depending brackets 24L which advantageously are secured to the top 17 so that the removal of the top will remove also the roller to facilitate cleaning of the structure. The cover has an internal depending flange to fit Within the receptacle 10 leaving a projecting lateral edge 25 to rest on the top of the receptacle.
In order to depress the drum 14 so that it may turn freely and Without friction at the opening 16, a key 26 is provided on a frame 27 presenting longitudinal bars at the sides of the drum 14 and bearing against the ends 21 of the axle or shaft 20 and the .side bars being united by a cross bar 28 to which the key 26 is connected, said key extending above the top 1.7. The bars 27 are pivoted in the present example at the ends opposite the cross bar 28 to hangers 30 rigid with the removable top and lying against the partition 11. i
A cover 29 may be provided as in Fig. 1, the cover being readily removable When the receptacle is to be used.
I Wish to state in conclusion that although the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7
A device of the class described including a container, a removable top thereon presenting an opening, a roller mounted for turning movement and extending at its upper side through the said opening, a shaft on which the drum is mounted to turn, springs exerting pressure against the ends of the said shaft and tending to press the latter against opposite edges of the opening, and members carried by said top on which the springs are seated so that the roller, its shaft, and springs will be removable With the removal of the said top; together With means to depress the roller against the action of the springs and relieve the pressure of the roller against the edges of the opening, said means including a frame presenting side bars adapted to bear against the ends of the shaft, members on the removable top, to Which members the said side arms are pivoted at one end, and a key connected With the said arms at the opposite ends thereof, the key extending above the removable top.
