To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TrioMAs A. Knnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to looks and is a modification of the device shown, described, and claimed in the application filed by me of even date herewith, Serial No. 204,487.
The object of the invention is to provide a controlling device for the bolt actuating mechanism of a lock, such as is described in the above-mentioned application, which will be controlled by the movement of the bolt actuating device in either direction; and which will also serve to lock the key against removal until the actuating mechanism has completed its movement in one direction or the other.
Further, it is an object of the invention to provide such a device which will be very simple in its construction, and will comprise but a few parts.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken centrally through a controlling member embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the mechanism shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a detail view on a slightly reduced scale of the connections between the bolt actuating shaft and the bolt.
In these drawings I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same in a form designed for use in a recording look. It will be understood that this particular form is chosen for the purpose of illustration only and that the mechanism, and more particularly the bolt actuating mechanism, may be of any suitable character which will operate the bolt when said mechanism is moved in either one of two directions.
In that form of the invention here illustrated T have shown the device as mounted on the outer side of the door 1, and as carried by an escutcheon, or supporting structure, which in the present instance comprises an outer housing, or casing, 2, preferably of bronze, and an inner supporting plate 3 rigidly secured to the housing and forming a support for the mechanism. The belt actuating mechanism may, as been stated, he of any suitable form, but as here shown it comprises a bolt actuating shaft it which is rotatably mounted in the supporting plate of the escutcheon and is provided on the opposite side of the door with means for operatively connecting the same with a bolt 5. This means, as shown in Fig. 3, consists of an actuating plate 6 rigidly secured to the shaft 4 and having arms 7 and 8 arranged on opposite sides of a stud 9 carried by the bolt, so that the movement of the shaft and the actuating plate in one direction will cause one arm to engage the stud on the bolt and project the bolt, and the movement of the shaft and the operat ing plate in the opposite direction will cause the other arm to engage the stud and retract the bolt. Suitable locking devices are pro vided to prevent the movement of the bolt independently of the actuating devices, but these locking devices form no part of the present invention, and need not be here described. The outer end of the shaft 4 is provided with an operating member, such as a knob 10, which is here shown as journaled in the escutcheon and as having its trunnion, 11, provided with a longitudinal bore into which the end of the shaft projects. The connection between the shaft and the trunnion is such as to cause these parts to rotate together but to permit them to be readily separated when the escutcheon is removed, and in the present instance the end of the shaft 4- is provided with a slot 12 adapted to receive a pin 13 mounted in the trunnion of the knob and extending through the bore thereof.
The controlling, or locking, devices for the bolt actuating mechanism may take various forms but I prefer, for the present type of lock, that here illustrated, in which a disk 14- is rigidly connected with the shaft 4 of the bolt operating mechanism. In the present construction this disk is rigidly secured to a collar, or hub, 15, which in turn is secured to the trunnion 11 of the operating knob, preferably by means of the pin 13 which extends through the bore of the trunnion, thus causing the knob, the shaft and the disk to rotate in unison. Coiiperating with the disk 14 is the controlling device proper, which is here shown in the form of a plate 16 having a part cotiperating with the disk to lock the same against movement in either direction. Preferably this part is in the form of a lug 17 projecting from that end of the plate 16 adjacent to the disk and adapted to enter a notch 18 formed in the periphery of the disk, and soarranged therein that when the bolt operating mechanism is in its normal or home position this notch will lie in alinement with the lug 17. In the construction here illustrated the locking member 16 is spring actuated so that it is held normally in operative relation to the disk and is automatically returned to that position when it is released after having been moved to an inoperative position. This is accomplished by means of a spring 19 secured at one end to the controlling mem ber and connected at its other end with a pin 20 secured to the supporting plate 3 and extending through an opening in the controlling member. Key actuated means are provided for moving the controlling member to an inoperative position with relation to the bolt actuating mechanism and as here shown the controlling member 16, which is slidably mounted upon the supporting plate 3, is provided with an opening 21 in which is mounted an actuating member 22. This actuating member is operated by the key and, in the present instance, I have shown the same as rigidly secured to the inner end of a key barrel 23 forming part of a cylinder lock of a well known construction. The insertion of the key in the key barrel releases the same for rotation and the actuating device 22 is of such a character that the movement of the key, which can turn in one direction only, will cause it to actuate the controlling member 16, and the actuating device and the controlling member have parts which cooperate to lock them in the positions to which they are moved by the key. Inasmuch as the key can be removed from the key barrel only when the latter is in its home or normal position it will be locked in the barrel until the actuating device has been released. As here shown the actuating device is in the form of a disk having a cam-shaped portion or nose, 24, the lower edge of which is so arranged that when the actuating device is in its normal position this edge will be substantially parallel with the lower edge of the opening 21 in the controlling member, and will act upon this edge of the opening to impart movement to the actuating member when the key actuated device is rotated. A spring 25 coiled about the hub of the key actuated disk 22 and connected-with the supporting plate 13 tends to move the disk and the key barrel toward their home or normal positions. Ihe lower edge of the opening 21 in the controllingmember is provided with a shoulder 26 and the movement of the key actuated de vice will carry the nose 24 thereof past this shoulder and permit the controlling member to be moved by its spring a distance sufficient to carry the shoulder into the path of the nose without permitting the lug 17 to enter the notch in the 'disk 14 of the bolt actuating mechanism, thereby locking both the disk and the controlling member in the positions to which they have been moved. A second nose 27 on the key actuated disk is arranged to engage a shoulder 28 formed in the upper edge of the opening 21 of the controlling member to limit the movement of the key actuated disk by the key.
Means are provided which will be actuated by the movement of the bolt actuating mechanism to disengage the controlling member from the key actuated device and permit these parts to return to their normal positions upon the completion of the movement of the bolt actuating mechanism. Preferably this means is embodied in the notched disk 14, and, as here shown, this disk is provided on opposite sides of the notch 18 therein with camshaped portions 29, one or the other of which will engage the lug 17, when the shaft '4 is rotated in either direction, and will move the controlling member 16 downward far enough to move the shoulder 26 out of the path of the cam nose 24 of the key actuated device, thus permitting this device to be returned to its normal position, and further permitting the controlling member to be held by its spring in engagement with the edge of the disk until the latter is returned to its normal position so that it will enter the notch in the disk when the latter has completed its return movement.

In order to prevent the return of the bolt actuating mechanism to its normal or homeposition before it has made a complete operative movement in one direction, I have provided a full-stroke device which comprises a tapered pawl 31 held normally in a central position by a spring 32 and adapted to ride over ratchet teeth 33 formed in the edge of the disk 14 on oppo site sides of a central notch 34, in which the pawl normally lies. Beyond each toothed portion of the disk the latter is provided with other notches to receive the nose of the pawl and permit the latter to change its position sd it can ride over the teeth upon the return movement of the disk.
The operation of the mechanism will be readily understood from the foregoing desiription and it will be apparentthat I have provided very simple and highly efiicient controlling mechanism'for the bolt actuating mechanism, which comprises a very few parts and which will be controlled by the movement of the bolt actuating mechanism in either direction.
While I have shown and described oneein- :bodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I do not .desire to be limited to the details thereof as various modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism having operative movement in two directions, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement in either direction, a key actuated device to move Said controlling device into an inoperative position, and means controlled by the movement of said actuating mechanism in either direction to automatically return said controlling device to its operative position.
:2. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism having operative movement in two directions, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against operative movement in either direction, a key actuated device to move said controlling device into an inoperative position and to retain the same in that position, and means controlled by the movement of said actuating mechanism in either direction to release said controlling device and permit it to return to its operative position.
3. In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism having operative movement in two directions, a controlling device movable into and out of a position to lock said mechanism against movement in either direction, a spring to hold said controlling device normally in looking relation to said actuating mechanism, a key actuated device to move said controlling device against the tension of said spring, said devices having cooperating parts to retain them in the positions to which they have been moved, and means actuated by the movement of said actuating mechanism in either direction to automati- 1 cally disconnect said parts and permit said devices to return to their normal positions.

In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism having operative movement in two directions and comprising a notched disk, a controlling member having part movable into and out of the notch in said disk, a spring acting upon said controlling member to hold the same in said notch, a key actuated dcvice to act upon said member to move said part out of said notch and to retain the same in an inoperative position, and parts carried by said disk on opposite sides of said notch to engage said controlling member, to actuate the same and impart movement thereto to disengage it from said key actuated device.

In a .lock, bolt actuating mechanism having operative movement in two directions and comprising a notched disk, a con trolling member having a. part movable into and out of the notch in said disk, a spring acting upon said controlling member to hold the same in said notch, a key actuated device to act upon said member to move said part out of said notch and to retain the same in an inoperative position, said disk having cam-shaped portions on opposite sides of said notch to engage that part of said controlling member which has been withdrawn from said notch and move the controlling member in a direction to disengage it from said key actuated device upon the completion of the operative movement of said bolt actuating mechanism in either direction.

In a lock, bolt actuating mechanism having operative movement in tWo directions and comprising a disk having a notch in the periphery thereof, a controlling plate mounted for reciprocatory movement toward and from said disk and having a lug adapted to enter the notch in said disk, a spring tending to hold said lug in said notch, said plate also having an opening therein, a key actuated (JJYlCO mounted in said opening and having a. part to engage said plate and move the same against the tension of said spring to Withdraw said lug from said notch, said key actuated device and said plate having parts cooperating to maintain said device and said plate into positions to Which they have been moved, said disk also having cam-shaped portions arranged on opposite sides of said notch, one
