Be it known that I, ORIN BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a door latch and lock of what may be termed t-he combination type i. e. of the type adapted to be released on the operation of a certain predetermined combination rather than by the use of a key.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a door lock of the combination type in which the bolt thereof is released for movement due to the operation 'in their proper order of tumbler actuating devices, and is automatically held from releasing movement immediately on the operation of a tumbler operating device out of its sequential order. y
A further object is to provide a bolt locking member which is normally held in bolt locking position by the actuation of a spring and which is released on the correct sequential operation of the tumbler actuating devices.
Another object is to provide an improved form of knob shaft construction whereby the connection between one knob and the bolt throwing mechanism may be interrupted when desired.

A further object is to provide a lock adapted for hotels, lodging and rooming houses and the like Vwhereby in its use keys are dispensed with and the room occupant operates the lock solely by working the correct combination, and to provide a lock for this use wherein the combination can be quickly changed without material effort.
Vfith the above mentioned and other objects in view, the invent-ion consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and set forth in the claims hereto appended, it being understoo'd that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to `without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
To more fully comprehend the invention reference is directed to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in side elevation ofthe preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken directly inside of the face plate on line 2-2 Y of Figure 3, illustrating the relative position of the parts forming the interior mechanism.

ln the drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, the numeral l indicates a lock casing preferably of rectangular configuration and mounted thereon for reciprocating movement is a latch bolt 2, the forward end of which projects from one edge of the` casing 1 through an opening 3 and is bevelled to .form a latch as at 4:. The spring 5 bearing 'againstthe .'Hange 6 and anchored within the casing as at 7 normally tends to project said bolt through its opening 3. notched'as at 8 to receive an arm 9 extending radially from ja tubular shaftl'O rotatably mounted at its ends within and eX- tending through openings 11 in the lock The bolt is casing l. Extending into the tubular shaft from its opposite end is a second solid shaftv 14 lreyed as at 15 for longitudinal movement WithinV the shaft 10 which admits through the slot 16 of longitudinal movement of the solid shaft 14. The shaft carries at its end a projection 17 for engagement Within one" of the grooves 13 as illustrated in Figure 5r. The shaft 14 carries a knob 18 for imparti ing axial rotation thereto andV thisshaft construct-ion enables the separation of the shafts and the operation of the member' 9 by the rotation of but one knob. r)CheV members for retaining the member 2 normally in locked position consists of a cam 19, the

"This adjustment `of each tumbler independent of the other about the shaft 22 enables the relative setting ofthe notches of the 'respective tumblers radially about the shaft in` any desired position. 1
Extending parallel of the shaft 22 is a paWl frame 27 lfulcrumed at yits ends as at 28 for swinging movement, and the same carries an adjustable paWl 2,9 adaptedto engage the teeth 3G of a ratchet 31 mounted on the shaft 22 between adjacent tumbler-s 24. A spring 32 normally forces the paivl V29 Within the path of the teeth 30. The .combination mechanism for the loclr consists in a plurality ofplungers operated from the exterior ofthe lock casing 1, and one lcooperating with each tumbler 24, in the present `embodiment there being live tumblers and consequently five yplungers.

The outer end of the pawl is pointed as at 41 and is adapted for pivotal movement as the pavvl swings about the pin 39.

A shaft return spring 41 is secured at one end as at 42 to the shaft 22 and at its opposite'end as at 43 to the casing 1, theaetion of thespring being `to normally Vmaintain the Cain 20 Within the depression 21 should for any reason due tothe operation of one ofthe plungers 34 the pawl 29 be released from engagement with its co-operating teeth 30. A combination lock including a rotating tumbler shaft, a slide bolt and a rotating knob shaft arranged with their axes in angular relation, tumblers carried by the tumbler shaft and formed with notched peripheries, a member carried by the tumbler shaft for locking engagement with the sliding bolt to preclude operative movement of the latter,
engagement,V with the notched peripheries thereof, a spring associated with the tumbler shaft for resisting the rotation of the same lby the tumbler operating devices, a pawl for retaining the shaft in its rotated position, said pawl adapted for movement to releasing position by the actuation of one of said tumbler operating devices and out of register with the notch of the pawl.
