Attorneys UNITED STATES PATIENT OFFICE.
ISAAC B. PHILLIPS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FORMING THE CURVES IN TAILS 0F HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,939, dated August 27, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac B. humans, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Forming and Curvin g the Tails of Horses; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an extension crupper for forming and curving horses tails, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows the device as attached on a horse, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the extension crupper.
A represents a metallic crupper of suitable di1nensions,provided with a semicircular metal band,B, which projects outward, as shown. To each end of this band is pivoted an arm, 0, and the outer ends of the two arms are connected by a semicircular metal band, D, said band and arms being made in one piece and forming one joint of the extension to the erupper. The arms 0 O of this joint contract toward the outer ends, so as to malretheradiu'sof the bandD smaller thar'ithat of the crupper-band B. Another joint, 0 D, is pivoted to the front end of the joint 0 D, and so on, as many joints as may be desired, the extension of the erupper getting gradually narrower toward the outer end. On the inner side of each arm of the several joints is a projection, a, which acts as a stop to hold the joints in their proper positions.
The crupper and its extension may be covered with leather and padded in any desired manner.
The crupper is put on in the usual manner, and the tail strapped or otherwise fastened in the bands B D D, &c., this part of tail being thus held in nearly an upright position.
By the application of this device to the organs the tail will be placed in a desirable altitude, as it exercises direct control over the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and osseous structure of the parts, contracting and toning up the extensors or elevators, and elongating the flexors or depressors upon scientific, physiological, and natural principles, imparting strength where inability exists to carry the tail in a graceful manner. In addition, the base of this extension crupper may be used for horses which are troublesome with their tails on account of catching the lines. The tail undergoes a complete system of training, and the device may be used in the stable, in the field, or on the road; attached to other gear or separate; regulated to suit; not interfering with the usefulness of the animal; nor incurring any heavy expenses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The metal crupper A, provided with metal band B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The metal crupper A, provided with the metal band B and an extension, consisting of one or more pivoted joints, 0 D, substantially as and for the purposes, herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of May, 1872.
I. B. PHILLIPS.
