ATTACHMENT FOR MOTOR-DRIVEN VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed April 26, 1919. berial No. 292,798.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn EARL STAUF' rmua cit zen of the United States, residing at Mount Dora, in the county of Union and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Motor-Driven Vehicles, of which the followin is a specification, reference bein had to t e accompanying drawings.
' his invention relates to certain improvements in attachments for motor driven vehicles, and it is an ob'ect of the invention to provide a novel and improved attachment of this general character which may be e1n ployed-with convenience and facility to extract a vehicle out of mud, sand, or the like.
It is'a'lso an object of the invention to provide'a novel and improvedattachment of this eneral character which is adapted to coact with the driving wheels of the vehicle so that the motor of the vehicle may be employed to effect the desired withdrawal or extraction.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily collapsed or compacted so that the same will occupy a minimum of space when not in use, whereby the attachment may be conveniently carried by the vehicle.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved attachment. for motor driven vehicles whereby certain important advantages are attairied and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of m invention will hereinafter be definitely clanned.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in plan of an attachment constriicted in accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position, the coacting vehicle being diagrammatically indicated. I
Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of one of the drums orspools as herein included,
taken through the/drum or spool as illustrated in Fig. 2 with the coacting portion of the wheel structure shown in fragment.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved attachment comprises the drums or spools D, a cable C, and a spreader S and which spreader S is adapted to be suitably engaged with a stationary member.- Each of the drums or spools D comprises a body portion 1 having end flanges (1 and b and the flange b is provided with the equidistantly spaced arms 2 each having its outer extremity provided with a foot 3. The foot 3 has an opening 4 preferably oblong and through which a hook bolt 5 or the like is adapted to be directed to effect an engagement of the drum or spool D with a driving wheel \V of a motor driven vehicle. The second flange ais rovided with an open slot 6 preferably radially disposed and for a purpose which will be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
The opposite end portions of the cable C are knotted as indicated at 7 so that when said extremities of the cable are disposed through the slots 6 of the drums or spools D, the end portions of the cable will be caused to wind around the drums or spools D upon the rotation of the wheels W and particularly when said wheels are driven by the motor comprised in the vehicle.
The cable C is of such length that when the extremities thereof are engaged with the drums or spools D, the folded portion of the cable will be positioned a desired distance in advance of the vehicle. A spreader S coacts with the folded portion of the cable G and, as is particularly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, said spreader S is in substantially the form of an equilateral triangle with its apex forwardly directed. The apex of the separator S is provided with a forwardly directed extension or arm 8 to which is suitably secured an end portion of a chain 9 or other flexible member. The chain or member 9 includes the spaced annular members or rings 10 adapted to be engaged over a stake ll driven into the ground or with any other suitable support.
The opposite end portions of the base 12 of the spreader S and the extension or arm 8 are provided with the pulleys 14 over which the cable C is directed. whereby the operation of my improved attachment is materially facilitated.
It is also preferred that the spreader S proved attachment is materially comprise separable sections so that when the device is not in use the same may be readily compacted to occupy a minimum of space so that its storage within the vehicle is materially facilitated.
in the present embodinn-ut of my invention, the base 12 and the side members 15 each comprise two separable sections 16 maintaincd in assembled relation by a coupling sleeve 17. The sleeve 17 is permanently attached to one of the sections 16 and detachabl secured to the second or coactin section 16 y a removable bolt 18 or the hie.
The spreader S serves t0,keep the stretches of the rope from hugging or contacting with the front wheels of the vehicle and also serves to maintain the stretches of the rope free of the running boards of a pleasure car or the like. It is also to be particularly stated that the pulleys 14 facilitate the use of a continuous rope and assure the requisite tension during a pulling operation.
It is also to be stated that it is preferred that the cable C wind around the drums or spools D from below, whether pulling the vehicle forwardly or rearwarly, as by this arrangement the functioning of my imfacilitated.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an attachment for motor driven vehicles constructed in ac Cordunce with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without dcparting from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason (io not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts heroin shown in carrying out my most invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1.. An attachment of the cl'iaractcr described comprising, in combination, drums adapted to be secured to the driving wheels of a motor driven vehicle, a cable having its extremities engaged with said drums to wind therearound, a spreader coacting with the intermediate portion of the cable, said spreader being substantially triangular in form, pulleys carried by the ends of the base of the spreader and the apex portion thereof, and anchoring means carried by the apex portion of the spreader, the apex portion of the spreader being provided with a forwardly directed arm with which the anchoring means is engaged and which carries the pulley coacting with the apex portion of the spreader.
2. An attachment of the character described comprising, in combination, drums adapted to be secured to the: driving wheels of a motor driven vehicle, a cable having its extremities engaged with said drums to wind thcrcaround, a spreader coacting with the intermediate portion of the cable, said spreader being substantially triangular in form, pulleys carried by the ends of the base of the spreader and the apex portion thereof, anchoring means carried by the apex portion of the spreader, said spreader comprising separable sections and coupling sleeves coacting with the adpiccnt sections of the spreader for maintaining the same in assembled relation.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
