To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAR ROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosemont, in the county of WVebster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Devices to Pull Automobiles Out of Mud; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a device for pulling automobiles out of mud, and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and eiiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a rectangular frame, having a drum journaled thereon with a cable attached thereto, for attaching it to a stalled automobile, whereby upon rotation of the drum, the automobile will be pulled from its stalled position, whereby it may proceed under its own power. A further object of this invention'is to provide a novel means of rotating the drum, whereby said means may be disconnected from the drum when desired. 7
A still further object of this invention is to provide a means for connecting one end of the frame to the ground or permanent object and having inclined legs secured to the other end thereof, whereby upon pulling an automobile from its stalled position, the frame will be supported in an inclined position by the anchoringmeans and the inclined legs will prevent the drum from engaging the ground and hindering the operation of the same.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described andclaimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device for pulling automobiles out of mud, constructed in accordance with my invention,

Fig. 3 is a detail view partly in section,
illustrating the supporting frame for the means which rotates the drum.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a rectangular frame, having journaled intermediate its ends, a drum 2 which has secured thereto a cable 3 having a suitable hook 4 secured to its free end for attaching the cable to a stalled automobile or vehicle. Secured to one end of the rectangular frame 1 are eye-bolts. 5 which have secured thereto chains 6 which have secured at their free ends, a ring 7 Secured to the ring 7 is a chain 8 having a hook 9 secured to its free end thereof. A plurality of anchoring members 10 in the form of tapering stakes, having a head on one end thereof, are constructed of metal or other suitable material and are driven in .the ground in spaced relation. The anchoring members are passed through the links in the'chain 8 and one through the hook 9 whereby the chain 8 may be anchored permanently to the ground. Pivotally secured to the opposite end of the rectangular frame are a pair of legs'll having their free ends secured together by a cross bar 12 for supporting'oncend. ofvthe rectangular frame .and also whichv will support said rectangular frame in an inclined position as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. ,The legs 11 maybe swung upwardly and folded upon the rectangularly frame 1 when not in use to provide a compact article, which may be readily stored away in a small space. A supporting frame comprises a pair of parallel arms 13 spaced apart by blocks 14 and a bolt 15 passed throughthe arms 13 and the rectangular frame'l for pivotally securing the arms 13 to the rectangular frame 1 adjacent the drum 2. Bolts 16 pass through the arms 13 and the blocks 14 for holding said arms 13 permanently and rela tively spaced from each other. A shaft 17 is journaled within the free ends of the arms 13 and has formed thereon a worm gear 18 which meshes with a gear 19 carried upon one end of the drum 2. Secured to the shaft 17 is a suitable operating crank handle 19' for rotating the worm gear 18. The supporting frame is adapted to extend transversely of the rectangularframe 1 and the free end thereof to be held in said position by means of a pin 20 in the rectangular frame 1 for holding the worm gear 18in mesh with the gear 19 upon the drum 2.
In operation, the anchoring members 10 are passed through the chain 8 and driven into'the ground in the front or rear of the automobile, and the hook 4 upon the cable 3 is attached to the automobile at any suitable place and upon rotating the crank handle 19', the worm gear 18 will rotate the drum 2 and wind the cable 3 thereon, pulling the automobile toward the rectangular frame 1. As soonras the operator starts to turn the crank handle 19", the cable 3 will be immediately tightened and the end of the rectangular frame to which the anchoring means is attached will rise from an engagement with the ground and be supported in an inclined plane as clearly illustrated in Fig. The legs 11 will bite into the ground and prevent/the device from slipping. If at any time it is desired to disengage the worm gear 18 from the gear 19 upon the drum 2, the pin 20 may be withdrawn from the rectangular frame 1 and the relatively spaced arms 13 may be swung upon their pivots so as to free the worm gear 18 from the gear 19. This may be done when wishing to unwind the cable 3 from the drum 2 to prevent the necessity of rotating the crankhandle 19. If desired, the chain 8 may be attached direct to the automobile and the cable 3 attached to one of the anchoring members 10 and by rotating the crank handle 19, the cable 3 will be wound upon the drum 2 drawing the automobile and the rectangular frame toward the anchoring members 10.
While I" have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:-
1. An apparatus of the character described comprising a frame; a drum journaled through said frame; a gear carried by the drum; a supporting arm pivotally secured to said frame; a worm gear rotatably carried by said supporting arm and adapted for engagement with said first named. gear; and a pin engaged with said frame and said supporting arm for retaining said Worm gear in engagement with said first named gear, said pin being removable to permit of the disengaging of said gears.
2. An apparatus of the character described comprising a frame; a support for the frame; a drum journaled through said frame; a gear carried by the drum; a supporting arm pivotally secured to said frame; a worm gear rotatably carried by said sup porting arm and adapted for engagement with said first named gear; and a pin eugaged with said frame and said supporting arm for retaining said worm gear in engagement with said first named gear, said pin being removable to permit of the disengaging of said gears.
