Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed September 14, 1918. Serial No. 254,122.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, LEONARD F. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bremerton, in the county of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knee-Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for protecting the knees of persons who frequently have to rest on one or both knees while about thei usual avocation. In the laying of floors and decks and in other construction work, particularly in riveting on steel vessels, the workman has to drop quickly on to one or both knees, with little time to choose a spot to kneel on, and yet, loosely scattered nails, rivets, blocks, eto., render such an act very dangerous unless his knees are in some way protected. Therefore, the object of this invention is to adapt a lmee pad that may be conveniently attached to the leg and be worn by the operator without inconvenience to his movements, and that will serve as a cushion that will protect the knee when resting on any object, be the same smooth or rough. To this end, my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a knee pad, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly stated in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents a portion of a persons leg with a knee pad according to my invention, attached to it in position for service, a portion of the pad being torn away to show the stiff wire frame 20.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same pad on a larger scale.
Numeral 4; represents the body of the pad, consisting of a stufied cushion of tough material, preferably waterproof because it frequently has to be used on wet floors and decks.
This cushion is formed around a stiif wire frame 20 and is kept horizontally stretched in form thereby. At each side edge of the cushion a loop 6, of the wire frame 20 projects up through the top of the cushion to serve as a pivotal bearing for two wire braces 7 and 8. The two forward braces 7 I call mates, also the two rear braces S, are mates because in each case the action of the two mated members is together of the loop 10, and, crossingunder the shin portion of the leg, it passes freely through the loop 12, of the mate brace '8, on the opposite side of the pad, and rising therefrom over the leg it engages, by means of its hook 13, the upper half of the loop 10, as shown in Fig. 1. In like manner, the strap 1 1, is firmly secured at one end to one half of the loop 15, of brace 7, and, going across the leg just above the knee, it passes through the loop 16, in the mate brace 7, thence returning around the leg it engages by means of the hook 17 the other half of the loop 15.
The straps are preferably made of strong elastic webbing. Being too long to be fully shown in the drawing they are represented as broken at 18. The pad being secured at each side edge to a pair of braces, each of which has its opposite mate, is held squarely in its proper position upon the knee, thereby protecting it at all times when applied as described. And being pivoted in a line near the lmee joint they permit entire freedom of movement of the knees in service.
The frame 20 might be made of other material than wire, and have holes made in it to serve in place of the loops 6. The pad cushion is preferably made a little longer 2. A knee pad comprising a cushion, a stiff In testimony whereof I afiix my signature frame i around the edge thereof to maintain in the presence of two Witnesses. the ec e in lane; two stifi braces pivoted on each side of'the frame independent of LEONARD RAYMOND 5 each other and connected with the leg by a Witnesses:
strap above the knee, and a, strap below the EDWARD VAN ToBEL, knee. 7 r W'. X. STEVENS.
