Beit known that I, KENNETH R. Hurr- MERLY, a citizen Iof the United States, resident at South Bethlehem, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Supporting Structures, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is toprovide means whereby awnings or other articles can be securely attached to supports such, for example, as stone or stucco posts.

Another object s to make my invention of a strong and durable construction and so that it can be easily andquickly assembled and secured in osition. p

A further object is to so construct my invention that it can be used as a hinge support for awnings where it is necessary to attach said awnings to stone or stucco posts, walls, or partitions `where it is impossible to gain access to the inside portion thereof.

These objects and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, and

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, 3 represents a support such, for example, as a stone, cement, or stucco hollow post, wall, or partition in which 4 representsthe inner surface and 5 represents the outer surface.

The support 3 has a hole G extending therethrough and this hole can be formed by drilling through the support and serves for a purpose hereinafter described.

A securing member 7, in the present instance illustrated as a one-piece hinge plate, has two oppositely disposed end portions 7d and 7 b which are wider than the central or connecting portion 8. The central portion 8 has two hinge connecting ears 9 projecting p outwardly therefrom and are provided with alined holes 10. These holes 10 form the hinge connection for example for an awning rod 11 and said rod 11 and ears 9 are pivotally connected by a pivot pin or bolt 12.

rlhe distance between the portions 7EL and 7b of the hinge plate 7, as is obvious from the drawings, is greater than the height of the hole 6 so that said end portions overlap `the top and bottom of the hole 6.

The securing plate 7 has holes 13 and 14 above and below the central portion 8. Bolts 15 and 1G respectively pass through these holes` 13 and 14 and through the hole 6 in the support 3. These bolts have toggle fin-` gers 17 in screw threaded engagement with theinnertlireaded ends of the bolts and of such length that when theyare turned into the` position clearly shown in Fig. 1 their opposite end portions will engage the inner surfaced of the support" 3 at the opposite sides of the' hole 6.

The rear surface of the securing plate 7 is provided with pointed lugs 18 which, when the bolts 15 and 16 are screwed up, will engage the outer surface 5 and pierce the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. By this means the securing plate 7 will be prevented from accidentally moving in a` lateral direction during its application tothe support 3.

1f desired, after the plate 7 has been secured. as above noted, the exposed portions 19 of the hole (5 can be filled with cement or similar substance. By the above arrangement and construction of parts, the securing plate will be firmly held to the support 3 and will withstand great weight or tension without becoming loose or breaking said support or the adjacent parts.

`While l have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereon. and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that l am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention,

` what I cla-im as new and desire to secure by to its inner surface; and a supporting meinber adapted to be placed against the front surface of said support and having toggle bolts extending through said hole in the support, said 'hole in the support being of less length but of greater width than that of said member to permit the toggles of said bolts to be moved to span said hole and engage the inner surface of said support whereby said member is held to the support, substantially as described.

2. T-he combination of a support having a hole extending therethrough from its outer to its inner surface; and a supporting me1nber ad-apted to be placed against the front surface of said support and having toggle bolts extending through said hole in the support, said hole inthe support being of less length but of greater ywidth than that of said member to permit the toggles of said bolts to lbe moved to span said hole and engage the inner surface of said support whereby said member is held to the support, said member having pointed lugs thereon adapted to pierce the outer surface of said support and prevent accidental movement of the member, substantially a-s described.

3. The combination of a support having a hole extending therethrough from its outer to its inner surface; and a solid one-piece hinge adapted to be placed against the front Copies of this patent may be obtained for surface of said support and having toggle bolts extending through said hole in the support, said hole in the support being of less length but of greater width than that of said hinge to permit the toggles of said bolts to lbe moved to span said hole and engage the inner surface of said support whereby said hinge is held to the support, substantially as described.

4. The combination of a support having a hole extending therethrough from its outer to its inner surface; and a hinge having a relatively narrow central portion and adapted to be placed against the outer surface of said support and having toggle bolts extend ing through said hole in the support, said hole in the support being of less length than said hinge but of greater width than the width of said relatively narrow portion of said hinge to permit the toggles of said bolts to be moved to span said hole and engage the inner surface of said support whereby said hinge is held to the support, substantially as described.
