Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1, 1919.
Application filed October 25, 1915. Serial No. 57,702.
To all whom it may concern; a
Be it knownthat LANTON WEBER, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the countyof Alameda andfState of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Cases, of which the, following is a specification;
This invention relates to improvements in display cases, and more particularlyto a device of this class adapted for use in displaying food products; a 1
The principal Objects of my invention are to provide a case which is neat in construction, which is proof against the entrance of insects to the interior, which provides ven tilation and which is sanitary, in that all parts are imperviousto odors and moisture.
Other objects are to provide an improved form of closure which is easily opened and closed thereby rendering the contents readily accessible, and at thesame time proving an insect tight closure which is so slmple in construction that it has no parts to become out of order; and to provide an im proved methodof adjusting the height f the interior shelves.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists ina novel construction, form and arrangement of parts herein illustrated and more specifically pointed out in the appended claims 7 i j Reference being had tothe accompanying drawings forming apart ofthis specificaw tion: 1 1 i i t Figure 1 is a .view in perspective looking at the front ofthe display case, constructed in accordance with my invention. r
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the rear portion of the display case, certain portions being broken awa r r Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section through the display case. 1 i Fig. 4 isanenlargedview in the line 44, Fig. 3. i
Fig. 5 is an enlarged view in section on the line 5-5, Fig. 3. t Fig. 6 is an enlarged view in front elevation showing the ventilating openings at the bottom of the front portion of the case. u
Fig. 7 .is an enlarged view in section showing the construction of the ventilating means.
Fig. 8 is an enlarged View in section on the line 8-8, Fig. 3.
Referring to corresponding parts in the held in place.
section on severalviews by the same numerals ofreferencez j a The counter on which the display case is mounted is denoted by .1,and is provided with a marble, slate or enameled metallic top 2, sufliciently large that it projects over the sides of the counter thereby enabling certain supporting brackets to be readily attached thereto. j
Display cases of short length are constructed with two end brackets 4, longer cases bein provided with one or more intermediate brackets? 5. Both type of brackets are pr0- vided with the vertically disposed front portion 6, from the top of which extends the horizontal portion 7 this in turn continuing in the downwardly curved portion 8. Thebottom of portions 6 and 8 rest on the upper surface of the top 2 and have formed integrally therewith U-shaped arms 10, the lower arm 11 of which extends under the overhanging portion of the counter top 2., Thisarm is provided with a clamping screw 12,.bywhich the brackets are firmly The vertical portion portion 7 are each provided with recesses 13, wherein is seated the front glass 14: and the top 15 respectively. These plates of glass rest on elastic pads 9 and are held in position by means of the removable strips 17 and 18, attached toitheir respective members byscrews 16. The glass ends 3 are held inposition in a similar manner.
, It will be noted that the frontsheet of glass 14 is of such width that a space is provided between the top thereof and the underside of plate 15, and between the bottom edge and the counter top 2. These spaces are closed by means of the strips 20' and 21,
formed of sheet metal and having a plurality of elongated openings punched therein of such size as to exclude insects. Each of these members has the Z-shaped bar 23, attached to the back the slots thus formed fitting the edges of the plate 14, thereby holding strips in alinement with the surface of the .glass. Each end of the strip members is provided with the ears 2 1 by which they are attached to the adjacent brackets. These stri s are of non-corroding metal and are .pre erably finished by nickel plating, there.
by presenting a neat and cleanly appearance in connection with the glass surfaces.
Within the case adjacent the front I pro- 6 and the horizontal vide an adjustable shelf 25. I This shelf con-Q sists of the glass plate 26, supportedby brackets 27, secured to each of the upright members & and 5, thisv bracket being: ad justable without the use of screws in the following manner:
The inner surface of the upright portion 6- on each of the brackets is provided with certain notches 28. The lower portion of the base of the brackets is provided with a rearwardly curved. end 29, adapted to enter these notches.
The top of the shelf bracket has a rear- W'ardly extending lug 80 wherein is a vertioally disposed T-shaped slot 31-. The supporting brackets 6 are provided with a similar-"F-shaped rib 32 extending to a point adjacent the top thereof, therebyenabling the :slot of the shelf bracket to enter over the top of the rib and slide downwardly until the flnger 29 is entered into one of the notches 28. Thus the finger prevents any further downwardly movement. of the bracket, While the T-shaped slot engaging the rib prevents the upper portion of the bracket from being pulled outwardly by the load placed thereon.
The upper glass plate 15 is flat in shape and extends to the point where the curved portion 8' commencesran'd the opening thus left is closed by means of a sliding screen door 36. Thisclosure consists of the screen 37: stiffened longitudinally by means of the reinforcing strips. 38, which I prefer to make of half round material riveting the same through the screen.
--"Ehe edges of the screen are riveted to a flexible metallic strip 40, which strip is slidably mounted in the slot 41, extending from the' base ofthe"portion 8 to a point adjacent the forward end of the horizontal portion 7, where there provided arubber bumper 42 on each of the brackets, adapted to contact with the upper edge of the slidable screen, thereby preventing a harsh noise when the screen is pushed back to its limit. On the lower strip 38 there are provided one or more kno'bs or rings 43 by which the closure may be raised or lowered.
In operation the. closure 36 is moved by] pulling upwardly a knob; 43 thereby causing it to slide in the slots %1. The strips attached to the screen being. flexible the closure is readily pushed backuntil it occupies the space under the flat top. plate 15, giving a large full opening to the interiorof the case.
hen the closure is down the top strip 38 prevents the entrance of flies or other insects between the upper edge of the screen and the under side of plate 15, thereby making the case insect tight in all respects, at the same time eflicient ventilation is provided due to the large screened rear opening and to the screened openings 20 and 21 in the front portion ofthe case.
As all parts of the device are of glass and metal I provide a display case which is im pervious to moisture, which will not absorb odors, which is efliciently ventilated and which isof pleasing design and appearance.
While I havev shown the preferred embodiment of my invention. it will be understood that minor changes may be made in detail of construction and design within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit thereof.
What I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent is 1. A display case comprising in combination, a. counter top, brackets extending between the front and rear of said top and fastened thereto, said brackets comprising a vertical front portion, a; horizontal top portion extending fromsaid front portion and a curved rear portionv extending tangentially from said horizontal portion to the said top, said horizontal portion and said curved portion having grooves along'their inner edges, a flexible fabric screen, flexible metallic strips attached to the edges of said screen and. extending into said grooves, reinforcing rods attached to said screen and extending between said flexible metallic strips, said screen forming a closure for the rear of said case.
2. A display case comprising a closing frame, glass Walls mounted on said frame and closing the front and top of the case, a track on said frame extending along the top and rear of the frame and curved between the rear and'top of the frame, a screen slidable in said track for closing the rear of the case and a portion of the top of the case, and a strip extending along the forward edge of said screen adapted to engage the under sideof the top glass wall of the case near the rear edge of said glass wall to form an insect proof oint between the under side of the top glass wall and the forward edge of the screen.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ANTON WVEBER.
