Description
T. D. ROBERTS.
Improvement in Fences.
N0. 130,823, Y Patented Aug. 27, 1872.

UNITED THOMAS n. ROBERTS, OE NEKIMI, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,823, dated August 27, 1872.
State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences; and I hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the same, ref-` erence being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which the gure is a View in perspective of a fence embodying my invention.
This invention relates to an improvement in portable fences; and consists of a panel constructed of four or more boards secured at one end to a post pointed to penetrate the ground to a depth of from eighteen to twenty inches, and at the other end to a batten pointed to penetrate the Surface from two to three inches; having also two strips secured to the. opposite sides of the top and the adjoining board near the end batten of the panel, and one strip secured in a similar manner on the outside of the panel, at the pointed post.
In the drawing, A is a panel of the improved portable fence. B B B B are the boards secured to the pointed post G and to the pointed batten D. E is a strip secured to the outside of the top`and the adjoining board B B, quite near to the pointed batten D. F is astrip secured Similarly to the strip E, but upon the opposite side of the panel, and about the distance of its own width from the batten D. G is a strip secured at the opposite end, and upon the Outside of the panel, in line with the point ed post C. A short strip, H, is used to connect the panels. lVhen necessary to form a corner a recessed strip, I, is secured to .the edge of the pointed post C, the recess Jbeing made at the desired angle, and the strip II placed in the recess J and in the space between the batten D and the strips E and F. The fence is built from the panels by inserting the pointed post C into the ground to the depth of eighteen or twenty inches and allowing the pointed batten D to penetrate to the depth of two or three inches. The batten D of one panel is placed in contact with the post C of another, and the panels are connected by the strip H. Each panel may be conveniently converted into a gate by withdrawing the strip H and freeing the point of the batten D. The panel will then turn on the pointed post C.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The panel A, composed of the boards B B B B, pointed post C, pointed batten D, and strips E, F, G, and H, arranged substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
'In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in portable fences as above described I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day Of-July, 1872.
