Fnnius, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of rfompl-ins and citate of N ew yorlr, hare invented a new and useful @hung-Clamp, of which the following is a speciiication rliis intention has reference to gluing clamps, and its object is to provide a clamp structure of practically universal applicability whereby a relatively large number of articles consisting of parts glued together may be clamped at one time in one structure, thereby avoiding the use of a large number of clamps which have heretofore been found ecessary for a lilre purpose.
ldlhere two pieces of wood, say, two boards or strips, are to be glued together edge to edge, it is customary to employ two or three or more clamps to hold these boards in close edge to edge union until the glue has se. Where a large Variety. of pieces are glued together the necessary stock of clamps is correspondingly large and the work necessarily taires up a large amount of space.
lWith the present invention there is provided a single structure capable of receiving and holding a large amount of work, whereby a great variety of gluing may be proceeded with at the same time and occupy a. minimum of space during the period of rest when the parts are clamped firmly t0- gether and so remain until the glue has set. lh/loreorer, the present invention provides a skeleton frame structure capable of being dismantled to occupy a minimum of space when not in use, and which may be set up to accommodate various lengths, widths, and thicknesses of material and to hold such material with the parts in firm union during the gluing operation.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, with the further understanding that while the drawings show a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings, but may be changed and modiied so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention.

VReferring to the drawings there is shown a basic frame consisting of longitudinal sills or beams l joined by a sui'licient number of cross strips 2. There arealso provided other posts 18 of suitable lengths adapted to traverse any of the passages 5 or 17. In addition to the partsv already named wedges 19 are provided for a purpose which will presently appear.
The gluing' clamp structure is made of a size to accommodate the largestpiece of work for which it is probable the clamp will be used, while the parts provided for use in connection with a clamp willreadily take smaller work. As examples of the class of Work for which the clampv is adapted, there isshown a panel door 20 andvarious groupings 21, 22 andv 23 of boards or strips which it is assumedV are glued together .edge to edge. ln the case or' the door 20 it is necessary to bring pressure thereupon both laterally and longitudinally thereof. As the door in the particular structure shown approximates 1n size the largest article for which the clamp is designed, it isrlaid upon the strips l within the space defined by the posts 7 and 1d. Such strips, however, will not reach from one post 7 to the other carried by the same strip el, and hence intermediate shorter posts 18 are inserted in appropriate holes in the spaced strips 16 and traverse corresponding holes in the strip or strips 1t, thus providing intermediate posts wedges 19 may be driven to force the strips engaged by them against the primary posts 7. ln this manner a pile of articles being glued together may be included in the ene frame with each article spaced from the other by spacing strips 1G, and where the pile does not reach to the top Ot' the posts 7 braces Q1 are applied to the then topmost strips 1G and 1G, being nailed thereto by nails 2,5, while the other ends of the braces 2llodge under respective pins 10. The purpose of the strips '24; is to prevent buckling of the topmost spacing bars 1G or 1G, and these braces also prevent buckling of the lower strips 1G. ',lhe wedges are driven between the parts to be glued and the respective posts, so that the parts to be glued are brought into close engagement to there remain so long as may be needed to effect the gluing together of the parts.
lVith the present invention it is 'possible to assemble and hold in clamped relation a large number of pieces being glued together while the whole assembled structure takes relatively small space and eliminates wholly the great multiplicity of clamps heretofore required in shops or other places where a large amount of gluing is being constantly performed. lrlcreorer, the gluing' clamp is susceptible of manufacture at low cost and in practice is found equally ctlicient with and oftentimes more eilicient than the customary forms of clamps employed in wood working.
The clamp of the present invention has the advantage that it permits the use of wedges which not only constitute an extremely simple form of pressure rmeans, but provides elongated bearing surfaces upon the work, thus avoiding the liability of dentlng or otherwise marring the work. The clamp structure also has the advantage of providing for the gluing of both wide and narrow groups of strips or'boards at the saine time. rlhis is brought aboutby the use of supplemental posts 18v and either shorter perforated strips 1G or full length perforated strips ll, and 16, since the supplemental posts may be erected anywhere along the strips between the end posts 7 carried by the strips ei or 16 or both. Since `the additional or supplemental beams 13 and 15 for bringing end pressure to bear upon some structures may be placed anywhere with respect to the width of the gluing frame, it is quite possible to use twoor more of such end pressure means, although in most instances a single end pressure structure will be sufficient, and, moreover, need not interfere in any manner with the use of the remaining portion of the structure for clamping smaller groupings during the gluing operation.

A. gluing clamp structure comprising relatively rigid frame made up of side sills and connecting cross pieces fast to the under sides of the sills, other cross pieces on top of the sills and adjustable lengthwise of the latter', said latter cross pieces each having a longitudinal series of perforations, posts adapted to the perforations and carried by the cross pieces, and another frame com posed of top and bottom beams and end posts connecting them, with one of the beams adapted to the spaces between the cross pieces of the basic frame and the perforated cross pieces, the clamping structure also including perforated spacing strips corresponding to the perforated cross pieces and supplemental posts adapted to the perform tions of any of the perforated strips, and the posts and certain of the perforated strips having matching perforations for the reception of locking pins.

A gluing clamp structure comprising a relatively rigid basic frame, post carrying members mounted on the frame for adjustment therealong and with respect to which the posts are also adjustable, and spacing strips conforming to the post carrying members and provided with series of perforations for the threading of the spacing strips upon the posts in different positions of adjustments of the latter.

A gluing clamp structure comprising a relatively rigid basic frame, post carrying members mounted on the frame for adjustment therealong and with respect to which the posts are also adjustable, and spacing strips conforming to the post carrying members and provided with series of perforationsvfor the threading of the-spacing Astrips upon the posts in different positions of adjustments of lthe latter, said clamping structure also including a clamping frame extendingY lengthwise of the basic frame and movable crosswise thereof to different posi: tions of adjustment. l

A gluing clamp structure comprising a relatively rigid basic frame, postcarrying members mounted on the frame for adjustment therealong and with respect to which the posts are also adjustable, and spacing strips conforming to the post carrying members and provided with series of perforations for the threading of the spacing strips upon the posts indifferent positions of adjustment of the latter, said clamping str-ucture also including a clamping frame eX- tending lengthwise of the basic frame and movable crosswise thereof to different positions of adjustment, and said last-named clamping frame comprising longitudinal beams and connecting end posts.

A gluing clamp structure comprising a relatively rigid basic frame, a plurality of lclamp frames mounted on and adjustable lengthwise of the basic frame and alsoadjustable for length crosswisegof the basic frame, and another clamp frame separate from and independent of the first-named clamp frames and extended lengthwise of the basic frame for a distance greater` than the distancebetween two of the first-named clamp frames.
ll. A gluing clamp structure having means for exerting pressure individually upon a pile of dierent groups of material being glued with the pressure exerted in substantially the same direction upon all the groups, and means for exerting pressure uponv one or more of the groups in directions substantially perpendicular to the iirstnamed pressure.
l2. A gluing clamp structure comprising a basic frame of fixed contour, clamp frames mounted thereon and adjustable along the first frame and also adjustable crosswise of the iirst-named adjustment to accommodate structures of different widths being glued, and another clamp structure carried by the main frame and provided with means for clamping the structures carried by the firstnamed clamping means to exert pressure thereon in directions substantially perpendicular to the direction of pressure exerted bythe first-named clamping means.
