principal features on which the present invention is based are a thread-parting device, and a thread-placing device arranged to move. the thread into the range of action of the parting device.
In looms of this general type two shuttles are used alternately, each shuttle upon becoming nearly if not quite exhausted of filling' being transferred from the shuttle-box exhausted. The shuttle box of the lay inof the lay to a bobbin magazine, and being replaced temporarily by a filled shuttle. The thread-parting mechanism to which the present invention relates is arranged to part the outlying stretch of thread that extends from the fabric to thespent shuttle, and the thread-parting operation is caused to occur before the spent bobbin has been discharged from the spent shuttle, so that when new filling is inserted into the shuttle the eye of the shuttle will have been cleared of old filling. fabric to the spent bobbin, a thread-cutting device, and a thread-engaging device whose function is to move the thread into position to be cut by the cutting device,-these parts being shown in the relative positions which they occupy at the instant when the thread is cut.

, The loom structure shown by Fig. 6 includes a frame 10, lay 11, crankshaft 12, connecting link 13, sword 14-, picker 15, and shuttle binder 16, all of well-lmown structure and arrangement. Two shuttles are shown, that indicated at 00 being in the shuttle box of the lay, and that indicated at :23 being held in reserve to replace the shuttle in the lay when the filling of the latter is cludes a movable front piece 17.
The weft-replenishing mechanism shown by Fig. 6 includes a bobbin magazine 20, shuttle supportQl, a bobbin insel'ter 22, a shuttle carrier 23, a shuttle receiver '24, a cam shaft 25, and other details hereinafter The loom is provided with suitable clutch shuttle a; the crankshaft may continue to rotate, but that when the filling in the operating shuttle m is exhausted to a predetermined degree the crank shaft comes to rest and the cam shaft is set in operation to the One rotation of the calm shaft is sufficient to perform a cycle of operations of the weftreplenishing mechanism, and upon the completion of such cycle the cam shaft again comes to rest and the crankshaft is again set in operation. y
Assuming that a change of shuttles is necessary in consequence of exhaustion of the filling in the operating, shuttle m, and assuming further that the crankshaft 12 has come to rest and that the cam shaft 25 has been set in operation, the follmving actions take place: A cam 26 lifts the shuttle-box front 17 and actuates a shuttle ejector 27 to transfer the shuttle x to the receiver 2%.
The receiver then: lifts the shirttlew'to clear a path for the shuttle 00' which is carried by the carrier 23 from the support 21- to the shuttle box of the lay. lVhile the carrier 28 is adjacent the lay, the receiver 245 descends to deposit the spent shuttle a0 upon .the carrier. The shuttle-box front 17 then descends to its initial position, confining the filled shuttle ac inthe place formerly occupied by the shuttle m. The carrier 23 then moves to carry the spent. shuttle to the support 21, where it isdeposited. in the position. occupied by the shuttle a" as shown by Fig. 6. Vhile the spent shuttle is in the position last stated, the shuttle inserter 22' is depressed to transfer a full bobbin a front the magazine 20"into the shuttle. In this connection it is to be understood that the shuttles used for this purpose are of well.- known structure which permits the full bobbin to enter through the top and: to force the spent bobbin out through the bottom, the shuttle being provided with suitable gripping means for holding the fullf bobbin, and. for permitting the discharge of the spent bobbin.
The fundamental principles as to interchanging two shuttles, and inserting fresh filling into each shuttle as it becomes exhausted is the same in this invention as in that set forth in. my said Patent 1,221,430, although there are some differences in the mechanism for accomplishing the results stated. and operations the said pending application includes a thread-cutting device arranged tocut the thread which runs fromthe fabric in the loom to the spent bobbin of the shuttle which has been placedupon the support 21 preparatory to receiving a full bobbin. I have shown a similar thread-cutting device for the same purpose in the drawings of this present application, and theimprovement contained in; this present application which is not contained in the aforesaid pending application is athread-engaging: device whose function: is to move-the thread into position. to be cut by the cutting de vice. Referring to Fig. 5, the spent bobbin (4 is shown in the relative position which- 1t occupies whlle in a shuttle and while-the said shuttle is resting upon the support 21 preparatory to receiving afullbobbin- The thread a extends from the spent bobbin to in order to causethe cutting device toact In addition to all these elementsupon the thread the front side of the shuttle was originally provided with a recess and the cutting device was arranged so that the points of the blades would occupy the said recess whenever the shuttle was upon the support 21 in the position shown by Figs. 1, 2' and 3. \Vith the former arrangement, however, the thread a would sometimes fail to enter between the blades of the cutting device; but having provided the device 30, I avoid the likelihood of such failure.
The operating mechanism for the cutting device is substantially the same as in the aforesaid pending application, but a description of the same may not be amiss in the present case. The blades 28 and 29-as shown are integral with relation to each other, being formed with a spring portion 31 whereby they a-re normally held open to receive the thread. The cutting device is mounted in a holder 32. Air arm 33 loosely mounted upon a roekshaft 3a is arranged to lift the blade 28. The blade 28 normally occupies a position lower than that shown by F 3, in which position the cutting edges of the blades-are open to receire the thread. The operating movement of arm 33 is caused by the shuttle carrier 23 after the carrier has deposit-ed the spent shuttleupon the support 21. For this purpose a rocking member 3.? is mounted upon the rockshaft 34- in position to'be engaged and actuated by the shuttle carrier. The movement of the member 35 is transmitted to the member 3?) by a torsional spring 36. Other devices, fully illustrated and described in said pending application, areopera-ted by the rocking member 35; but the description of such other devices need not be-given in this case.
The thread-engaging device 30, asshown, is affixedto the shuttle carrier This device is provided with a: series of hooks 37, any one of which may catch the thread. This device is so arranged that the hooks extend upwardly into the spent shuttle when the shuttle is upon the carrier in the posi tion shown by Fig. 4. A notch 38 is provided in the lower edge-of the front wall of the shuttle to enable the hooks to pass from the shuttle after the forward travel of the shuttlehasbeen arrested by the front of the support 21 andwhile the carrier 23 continues to'move to the'positionshown by Figs. 1 to 6. i
The cutting action of the cutting device occurs before the spent bobbin is discharged from the shuttle, and the bobbin thread on the bobbin side of the cutting device is free to be drawn out of the throat of the shuttle by the discharged bobbin to clear said threat for the thread of the fresh bobbin.
I claim:
1. In a. weft-replenishing loom, means arranged to interchange a spent shuttle and a filled shuttle, means arranged to insert a full bobbin 111 the spent shuttle and force the spent bobbin out of said shuttle, means arranged to cut the thread running from the fabric to the spent bobbin, and threadengaging means arranged to move said thread into position to be cut by said cutting means. i a

3. In a Weft-replenishing loom, means arranged to insert a full bobbininto a spent shuttle and force the spent bobbin out of said shuttle, means arranged to carry the spent shuttle from the shuttle box of the lay to said bobbin-inserting means, means arranged. to cut the thread running from the fabric to said spent bobbin, and threadengaging means carried by said shuttlecarrying means to move said thread into position to be cut by said cutting means.
4. In a Weft-replenishing loom, means an ranged to insert a full bobbin into a spent shuttle and force the spent bobbin out of said shuttle, means arranged to carry the spent shuttle from the shuttle box of the lay to said bobbindnserting means, means arranged to out the thread running from the fabric to said spent bobbin, and thread engaging means arranged to operate While said spent bobbin is in the shuttle to move said thread into position to be cut by said cuttin means.
5. In a Weft-replenishing loom, means for supporting a shuttle away from the shuttle box of the lay, means arranged to carry a spent shuttle from said shuttle box to said support, tln'ead-cutting means adjacent said support, thread-engaging means arranged to move the thread, running from the fabric to the spent bobbin in the shuttle on said support, into position to be cut by said cut ting means, and means arranged to insert,
a full bobbin into the shuttle on said support and force the spent bobbin from said shuttle.
6. In a Weft-replenishing loom, means for supporting a shuttle away from the shuttle box of the lay, means arranged to carry a spent shuttle from said shuttle box to said support, thread-cutting means adjacent said support, thread-engaging means carried by said carrying means to move the thread, running from the fabric to the spent bobbin in the shuttle on said support, into position to be cut by said cutting means, and
aneans arranged to insert a full bobbin into the shuttle on said supportand force the spent bobbin out of said shuttle.
7. In \veft replenishing loom, means arranged to interchange a spent shuttle and a filled shuttle, said means including a shuttle-ca1rier, means arranged to insert a filled bobbin into the spentshuttle at a position apart from the shuttle-box of the lay, a thread-cutting device, thread-engaging means arranged to move the thread, running from the fabric to the spent shuttle, into position to be cut by said cutting device, and means arranged to be actuated by said shuttlecarrier to operate said cutting device.
8. In a Weft-replenishing loom, means arranged to interchange a spent shuttle and a filled shuttle, saidmeans including a shuttle-carrier, means arranged to insert a filled bobbin into the spent shuttle at a position apart from the shuttle-box of the lay, a
shuttle to move the thread, running from the Y fabric to the spent shuttle, into position to be cut by said cutting device, means arranged to arrest the spent shuttle While said sluittle-earrier is moving, to register the spent shuttle in bobbin-receiving position, and means arranged to be actuated by further movement of said shuttle-carrier to operate said cutting device.
9. In a Weft-replenishing loom having a change shuttle'box and a thread-parting device, the combination of means arranged to remove the spent shuttle from said shuttlebox, and thread-positioning means having a thread-engaging portion movable into and out of the spent shuttle to move the thread into position to be parted by said device.
10. In a Weft-replenishing loom having a change shuttle-box'and means arranged to discharge the spentbobbin from the spentshuttle outside said shuttle-box, of means including a shuttle-carrier arranged to transfer the spent shuttle from said shuttleboX to the first said means, a thread-engaging device carried by said shuttle-carrier and arranged to move the outlying thread of the spent shuttle laterally away from the latter, and thread-parting means arranged to part the laterally moved thread between said device and the eye of the shuttle.
11. In a Weft-replenishing loom, in combination, a Working shuttle and a spare shuttle each having a recess in its front Wall, a change shuttlebox, means arranged to interchange the spent shuttle in said shuttle-box and the spare shuttle, means ar ranged to part the outlyingthreadof the spent shuttle, and means movable into and out of said recess of the spent shuttle to move said outlying thread into potential parting position relatively to said parting means.
12. In a Weft-replenishing loom, in combination, a Working shuttle and a spare shut- ;tle each having a recess in its front wall, a change shuttle-box, means arranged to interchange the spent shuttle in said shuttlev-box and the spare shuttle, means movable .into and out of said recess of the spent shutitle to. displace-the outlying thread laterally from the spent shuttle, and means arranged to part said displaced thread between said recess and the delivery eye of the spent shuttle. I

In a Weft-replenishing .loom in combination, a shuttle-box, a shuttle-carrierand operating mechanism therefor arranged to carry-the spent shuttle outside the shuttle- 130K, and thread-parting means arranged to beoperated by-said shuttle-carrier to part thethread that extends from the fabric to the spent shuttle.
14c. In a weft-replenishing loom having a change shuttle-box, shuttle-changing mechanism including means for removing the :spent shuttle from said shuttle-box, means arranged to part. the thread that extends from the fabric to the; removed spent shuttle,
